Bomanite Newsletter : Victory Park

Victory Park is a 75 acre mixed use development that surrounds American Airlines Arena. It is home of the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars and is located in downtown Dallas. In 2014 a redevelopment with a focus on pedestrian-friendly improvements to Victory Park Lane was commenced. The goal was to improve the overall pedestrian experience and connectivity between American Airlines Center / Victory Plaza and the Southern area of Victory Park.

The street and streetscape improvements were a vital component of transforming Victory Park into Dallas’ premier walkable entertainment district. Texas Bomanite worked with Stantec ViBE in choosing the best medium for the proposed redevelopment streetscape areas. Bomanite Sandscape Texture was part of the hardscape design which included granite pavers, concrete pavers, and amenities such as benches, lighting, tree grates and signage. The Architect’s design of the Sandscape areas included sandblasting of a geometric pattern.

Texas Bomanite installed 4,500 Square Feet of Bomanite Sandscape Paving in the hardscape areas along Victory Park Lane between the tree grates and curbs. The project was built in 3 phases to meet the General Contractors critical schedule and to accommodate the W Hotel, High Rise Residences, Restaurants, and other businesses along Victory Park Lane.

The work performed by Texas Bomanite earned them top recognition and a Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project of the year.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture is designed for outdoor applications where an alternate to conventional concrete finishes is required. Sandscape Texture, one of the Exposed Aggregate Systems offered by Bomanite for architectural concrete surfaces, utilizes specialized concrete mix designs, additives, topical treatments and advanced application procedures.

The finished Sandscape Texture product resembles sand blasted concrete and can incorporate specialized colored sands in the concrete and aggregates exceeding 3/8” in diameter. The final product is an economical alternate to other decorative finishes while producing a monolithic concrete slab with a low life cycle cost due to the pre-aged nature of the surface. Applications include plazas, shopping centers, schools and exterior walkways—anywhere improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic is necessary. These highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of
standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect.

The Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems are applied by specially trained and licensed Bomanite Contractors, ensuring consistent quality in every application. Every Bomanite Licensed Contractor is part of a network of architectural concrete experts – professionals who receive ongoing technical training to ensure that your project is completed on time, on budget, and beyond your expectations. Bomanite Newsletter : Barnum Park Wetlands

Denver Parks and Recreation was in need of a pervious, grassed pavement system for the maintenance access to the Barnum Wetlands Forebay. They sought out WHPacific, Inc. for recommendations. The vacuum truck used for maintenance weighs 103,000 lbs fully loaded. Grasscrete, a pervious concrete system designed to allow water to pass freely through while maintaining a structural integrity adequate to support the required vehicles was chosen.

The Grasscrete system selected can be purely functional or can be a concealed product that is both functional and pleasing in appearance. Grasscrete offers the end-user the ability to provide year-round access for a variety of applications requiring structural paving surfaces without compromising the aesthetics of their exterior landscaping and having to utilize traditional hard pavements, minimizing the need to control storm water runoff.

Grasscrete constructed with Molded Pulp Formers can be employed as a stabilization product for areas that experience seasonal runoff or storm water channeling. Pervious installations requiring maximum water capacity, such as those over rainwater harvesters or crushed stone reservoirs, are excellent applications for the Grasscrete product cast using the Molded Pulp Former. Grasscrete can be customized to suit a wide variety of applications, including, but not limited to, the elimination of retention ponds or utilization of retaining areas, flood plain for overflow parking and the management of sediment buildup such as adjacent to large storm water inlets.

To handle stormwater coming off the adjacent Federal Boulevard, the Colorado Department of Transportation opted to build a new constructed wetland, to store the stormwater runoff before it ultimately reaches the 4-acre Barnum Park Reservoir. The newly created Barnum Park Wetlands now catches stormwater runoff from Federal Boulevard. The stormwater system first directs the runoff into a concrete basin, from which it drains into the wetland, which is approximately an acre in size. Any overflow from the wetland enters the Barnum Park Reservoir, just west of the project. In the future the Grasscrete access road originally installed will be extended to the newly developed area.

The Bomanite Pervious Concrete Systems are applied by specially trained and licensed Bomanite Contractors, ensuring consistent quality in every application. Bomanite Newsletter : Jackson Park Playground

Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite of Tulsa worked with architects PDG Incorporated to create a unique and one of a kind design for Jackson Park located in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Micro-Top XT by Bomanite in several custom colors were chosen to create a vibrant and fun playground. The colorful concrete design blended well with the dynamic aquatic play features of the splash pad and shade shelters. The Jackson Park Splash Pad is the largest in the community and covers approximately 2,200 square feet.

Micro-Top XT by Bomanite is a two-part, polymer-modified cementitious coating consisting of a unique rubber-like polymer liquid and a cement-aggregate blend. It can be applied over almost any clean, sound surface including concrete, cement block, tile, metal and wood in a wide range of colors and graphics. Micro-Top XT has extraordinary adhesion and ability to withstand prolonged pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In these respects, the material is far superior to conventional cementitious coatings. Micro-Top XT provides a tough, water-retardant coating that substantially reduces water penetration,
freeze-thaw scaling and concrete carbonation. It is a “breathable” coating that releases normal entrapped vapor without loosening or blistering. Typical uses include concrete exterior restoration, parking structure protection, sidewalk resurfacing, wall refinishing and installation coating, stadium renovation, swimming pool walkways and balcony deck surfacing.

Bomanite Newsletter : Greenway Station Shopping Center – Paver Replacement

Greenway Station, built in 2003 is an open-air shopping center designed as a pedestrian-friendly environment with convenient store front parking. With its attention to architectural details and landscaping the upscale, open-air lifestyle center includes strolling walkways, extensive gardens, a spacious courtyard and a 60-foot clock tower. The brick pavers installed originally throughout the shopping center were failing badly and the Greenway staff contacted Bomanite Licensee, Bastian Concrete Construction for a solution. Working together Greenway appointed Bastian Concrete as the preferred contractor for installing only Bomanite Systems and products.

All of the work needed to be done while the stores remained open, which meant different projects, areas for renovation were done at odd hours to make it all come together. Bastian Concrete removed and hauled away all the pavers and base; all the used brick pavers were given to the local stone quarry for resale/recycling. Bastian Concrete then reset the base, took care of many drainage problems in the regrading and repoured the sections with Bomacron stampings. Several imprint patterns; Running Bond Used Brick, Herringbone Used Brick and Soldier Course Used Brick were chosen for the shopping center and paver replacement project to compliment the original design and upscale outdoor shopping experience.

Bomanite Newsletter : Kansas City Zoo Helzberg Penguin Plaza

The design team at Bowman Bowman Novick approached Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall in 2012 to discuss the concept and determine the reality of executing the vision of the new $15 million state-of-the-art penguin exhibit at the Kansas City Zoo. Musselman & Hall quickly assured the design team and owner that not only could the plaza be constructed per the concept but Musselman & Hall could help them go beyond that of their expectations.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture was chosen for the 2,500 square foot plaza. The entrance was engraved and stained to replicate the earth from a south pole perspective. Antarctica, Australia, South America, Africa, and the Galapagos Islands were stained into the plaza along with the oceans using several coordinating colors of Bomanite Con-Color. The stain was layered from light to dark tones to create relief and variation in the oceans and land masses. The oceans were stained a light blue near the continents; transitioning to deep, dark blue at the deepest areas of the ocean. Likewise the continents were stained. Vinyl templates/ paint masks were produced, using CAD files, for layout of the continents on the 56’ diameter globe. All longitudinal and latitudinal lines were bevel cut into the plaza. Eighteen species of penguins along with their unique footprints (to scale) were engraved into the plaza. Layout and execution was critical and accuracy was of the utmost importance to the owner and designer.

The work performed by Musselman & Hall earned them top recognition and a Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project of the year. The Helzberg Penguin Plaza entrance is the just the beginning to inspire people’s interest in becoming stewards of the planet’s wild penguin populations. Bomanite Newsletter : Bomanite Pervious Concrete Systems

Grasscrete is a cast-in-place, rebar reinforced concrete slab containing a series of voids created by a patented forming process. These voids are subsequently filled with a variety of materials from stone through sand and soil planted with a wide variety of vegetation. The Grasscrete system selected can be purely functional or can be a concealed pavement that is both functional and pleasing in appearance. Grasscrete offers the end-user the ability to provide year-round access for a variety of applications requiring structural paving without compromising the aesthetics of their exterior landscaping or having to utilize traditional hard pavements, minimizing the need to control storm water runoff.

Stone Filled Grasscrete Systems: Ideal for sustained traffic areas, the Grasscrete system can be filled with stone for maximum percolation rates and water retention. Stone filled systems are capable of draining at rates of up to 480 inches per hour with 100% retention of water possible with correct design. the stone filled application is ideal if seeking a low maintenance design.

Slope Protection Grasscrete Systems: Capable of installing at a slope of 1:2 (50%), Grasscrete has been flow tested to rates in excess of 26 feet per second. This enables it to be used in exacting locations such as emergency spillways. The same testing process has also shown that when used in water flow Grasscrete is hydraulically efficient. Under heavy flow, long stemmed grass is flattened with the resulting thatch reducing the Mannings ‘n’ value for hydraulic roughness to as low as 0.03. Pre-cast concrete systems require infill
panels to create directional changes. these spaces can cause turbulent flow that become a focal point for erosion, Grasscrete by contrast is a continuous slab with no such weakness.

Concealed Grasscrete Systems: Ideal for low traffic volume areas, the Grasscrete system can be completely concealed with vegetation so it is functional, environmentally friendly and pleasing in appearance. Grasscrete offers the end-user the ability to provide year-round access for a variety of applications requiring structural paving surfaces without compromising the aesthetics of their exterior landscaping and having to utilize traditional hard pavements, minimizing the need to control stormwater runoff.

Partially Concealed Grasscrete Systems: The ‘feel good’ factor of greenspace cannot be overlooked as street scenes are softened without losing essential structural performance. Greenspace within urban areas is invaluable in balancing CO2 levels created by vehicular traffic. Located at the actual point of emission, the natural digestion by a grassed parking area can help to avoid atmospheric CO2 build up and reduce the “urban green island effect”.

Bomanite Newsletter : Valley Fair Mall Renovation

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Architectural Concrete & Design (ACD), based out of Draper
Utah, was approached by the Valley Fair Mall Management team to design a topping system to go directly over their existing tile without any demolition. ACD, with the help of the Bomanite Company’s Director of Technical Services, Terry Grimble, determined and designed the best system to use. The work was to be performed at night once the stores were closed for the evening. Since the stores were to remain open during the construction stages, the fast drying Bomanite Thin-Set was chosen. This cost effective system saved the mall management team money by not having to remove the existing tile and also keeping the mall open during the process.

The new design called for a variety of concrete stamp patterns, colors and streetlights that would transform the mundane walkway into an interesting, winding streetscape. throughout the concourse, the Bomacron Basketweave Used Brick pattern integrally colored with Bomanite Brick Red and the Bomacron Random Slate pattern in Shale Gray covers much of the way. For visual breaks, the Bomacron 8-inch English Slate Texture border in Sand is straight in places and free- flowing in others. For even more variety, the Bomacron 12-inch Boardwalk pattern in Sonora Tan graces the mall’s roundabout and accents selected areas.

Bomanite Thin-Set, a specially formulated polymer-modified topping mix that can be imprinted, and produce a decorative paving finish similar to Bomanite and Bomacron imprinted concrete, will bond to any stable, structurally sound substrate. Bomanite Thin-Set is also compatible with Bomanite Chemical Stain, Bomanite Topical Stain and Bomanite Con-Color to provide the antiquing look and feel of real stone, brick or wood. It typically is installed 3/8-inch thick and can be feathered to a zero edge. Using Bomanite Thin-Set is an extremely effective alternative to demolishing an existing substrate, as it can be exposed to traffic quickly due to his high compressive strength — which was a priority for the Valley Fair Mall Project.

The Bomanite Toppings Systems are applied by specially trained and licensed Bomanite Contractors, ensuring consistent quality in every application. Bomanite Newsletter : Brownwood Paddock Square

Paddock Square, a town square where residents congregate for nightly entertainment with
plenty of food and retail opportunities, features water towers, silos, barn and log-cabin
structures. The style is designed back to an era when cowboys drove cattle through the state. Bomanite Licensee, Edwards Concrete Company took the ideas of the architect, Michael Pape & Associates, and made them come alive with their talented crew of concrete artist and even added a few of their own designs to make the theme really stand out and create a WOW factor.

At Paddock Square, Edwards Concrete placed integrally colored concrete in an earthy brown shade. Bomanite Color Hardeners and Release Agents were utilized with the Dried Earth Texture stamp to provide an illusion of sun-baked mud and dirt.

The sidewalks to the entrance of Brownwood at Paddock Square had to be poured while
overhead cranes set the Bronze statues in place. Once the cows, horse and dog were in place the Edwards crew had to pour concrete up to and around the animal feet then stamped the concrete to make it look like the animals were traveling through an old west town on a dried cracked mud path. The cow and horse stamps had to be made to match the size of the animals and scale of the statues. Creative stamping techniques were utilized, for horseshoes, “cowboy” footprints and tracks of wagon wheels. Installers strapped horse stamps onto their own feet and even hired a dog to strut across the wet concrete. The Bomacron Dried Earth Texture imprinting tool from Bomanite was employed to weather the faux dirt.

Bomanite has a commanding selection of imprinting tools to select from. Bomanite molds are developed from natural products such as stone or wood as well as unconventional surfaces such as metal or plastic. Images, logos, borders and highly custom textures are all part of the Bomanite offering. Bomanite products have been engineered to produce highly architectural imprinted concrete with long lasting results. The Bomanite fl agship coloring product used with our Imprint Systems, Bomanite Color Hardener, has been time proven over decades of installations in all climates. With a wide product offering, Bomanite Imprint Systems are a single source for all your concrete coloring and texturing needs.

Bomanite Newsletter : Partyka Chevrolet / Mazda Dealership

Bomanite Modena Monolithic is a cementitious interior bonded floor topping mix that is blended with selected decorative aggregates using traditional ready mix concrete equipment, then placed and trowel finished. Once fully cured Bomanite Modena Monolithic is ground to expose the aggregates and polished to the desired gloss level. Bomanite Modena Monolithic is installed over concrete in a wet on wet process the same day the concrete slab is poured. Cove base and stair components are generally pre-cast and finished to match. Bomanite Modena Monolithic is engineered to work best with aggregates such as granite, glass, marble, porcelain, etc. that range from 1/4” to 3/4” in size. Unlike comparable terrazzo flooring, Bomanite Modena Monolithic is designed specifically to be polished with an aggregate gradation similar to that of concrete. Bomanite Modena Monolithic is integrally colored in a wide range of options and may be seeded with additional aggregate when creating highly unique floors.

Bomanite Modena Monolithic is generally installed at a 3/4” to 1 1/2” thickness dependent upon the size of aggregate with thicker section thickness possible for select applications. Bomanite Newsletter : TCU Amon G. Carter Stadium Redevelopment

Immediately following the last home game of the 2011 season, TCU began demolition
on the east side of the Amon G. Carter Stadium. Ninety-five donors contributed over $164
million dollars to have the stadium renovated, exceeding the original goal of $105 million. The overage allowed for work to be completed to the east side of the stadium before TCU’s debut in the Big 12 Conference this year.

In order to be ready for the first home football game, the renovation had to be put on a very aggressive and accelerated schedule. Texas Bomanite, Bomanite Licensee, was involved with the Founders’ Plaza part of the design from the beginning. Newman, Jackson, Bieberstein Inc., (NJB) the landscape architecture firm tasked with designing the plaza, consulted with Texas Bomanite about different finishes, which led to meetings with the university and Austin Commercial LP, the general contractor on the project.

The architectural team, consisting of NJB and the stadium redevelopment’s lead
architectural firm, HKS, wanted to depict an accurate representation of downtown Fort Worth in 1930. Texas Bomanite crews worked feverishly to complete over 40,000 square feet of exterior walkways on the Founder’s Plaza and around the stadium to the visitor’s entrance. The Founder’s Plaza features statues of the donors who made the renovations possible, all set in a “street map” of Fort Worth, featuring nearby streets, railroad tracks and even the Trinity River, using several different products and systems. The Founder’s Plaza was completed using the following finishes: Bomanite Sandscape, Seeded Aggregate (all granites from the San Saba area), Bomanite Con-Color Stain & Sandblast. For the Trinity River, a custom-made stamp called Shifting Sand was used and was embedded with purple rope lights for a stunning visual at night. Texas Bomanite also embedded 71 stainless steel letters to call out Fort Worth street names, as well as solar lights throughout. The visitor’s entrance features a 40-foot wide TCU logo encapsulated by a circle.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture is designed for outdoor applications where an alternate to
conventional concrete finishes is required. These highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect.
