Bomanite Custom Polished Concrete Provides Durability and Boosts Beauty
The Bomanite VitraFlor system consists of initial grinding, chemical hardening with Bomanite Stabilizer Pro, and honing and polishing with protection from Bomanite VitraFinish. Bomanite Patène Teres uses Bomanite Chemical Stains and Bomanite Concrete Dyes to color fully cured concrete as part of the polishing process and for this project was utilized in conjunction with Bomanite Concrete Dye. This project included 4,615 SF of polished concrete at a 400-grit finish in the hallways and 680 SF with pattern, scoring, and dye in The Hub. The design in The Hub consisted of a geometric triangle pattern in two different shades of Bomanite Black Orchid Concrete Dye. Bomanite custom polished concrete was selected so that the office space would uphold beauty while maintaining durability against the high foot traffic expected in the office.
Award Winning Decorative Concrete

Along the Charles River with a close proximity to Cambridge and Boston, the tenants of 100 Forge enjoy a nearby bountiful bevy of amenities that create a unique urban-suburban experience. Located in Arsenal Yards, there are dozens of eclectic restaurants, bars, curated shops, and fitness studios nearby, as well as a hotel, grocery store, movie theater, childcare services, apartments, and open outdoor spaces. It is truly a distinctive deluxe life sciences landmark workplace where scientists are inspired to connect, explore, and innovate.
Bomanite Process Produces Perfect Possibilities
Boylston Properties chose Ayers Saint Gross as the architectural designers and Erland Construction as the main contractor for this project. Erland contacted Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction, LLC directly based on a good experience on a past project. Premier Concrete Construction began working right along with the design team and helped get them started on the color selection process. Premier supplied color samples as well as aggregate samples.
Premier Concrete Construction then cast small samples for initial approval and then proceeded with the mockup phase in separate elevator lobbies to showcase the intricate divide strip layouts. The 4,330 SF project was completed with a seamless install time in one mobilization, and Premier Concrete Construction was able to deliver the floor to the owner a little ahead of schedule. It’s a good example of how the Bomanite process and relationship works from start to finish on a project. The entire process from design to completion was approximately one year.
Bomanite Modena Means Successful Solution
Premier helped facilitate the design team’s choice of Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems and Bomanite Modena for the 100 Forge project. The design details chosen for this project were Dovetail, Iron Ore, and Caviar epoxy colors with natural and mirror aggregates. Bomanite Modena is an engineered interior cementitious topping, applied to cured concrete, that is blended with selected aggregates and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level and to expose the desired amounts of aggregates. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Bomanite Modena is the optimal choice for renewed surfaces, or, as in this case, new construction.
The primary benefits to Bomanite Modena TG are the range of colors available, the variety and size of decorative aggregates, the excellent durability, and the ability to create a predictable and relatively uniform surface appearance, making it perfect for high traffic public access buildings such as airports, hospitals, government buildings, and schools. The various Bomanite Modena TG products are engineered to work with a range of aggregates such as granite, glass, mirror, marble, porcelain, etc. typically ranging from 1/8” through 5/8” in size. Unlike comparable terrazzo flooring, Bomanite Modena TG is designed specifically to be polished with a fine aggregate gradation like that of concrete. Bomanite Modena TG is integrally colored and may be seeded with additional aggregate.
Award Winning Decorative Concrete
For this project, Premier Concrete Construction received the 2022 Silver Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project. Chosen specifically because of their previous project performance and craftsmanship, Premier Concrete Construction again exceeded expectations of their client by delivering early and creating unforgettable upscale flooring. The scientists who work at this beautiful building, and strive daily towards innovation, cannot help but be inspired by the augmented ambiance from the decorative concrete flooring installed.
The Green Hills Library Center in Kansas City, Missouri is one of over 30 library service outlets in the Mid-Continent Public Library district. This location opened in September 2022 and spans approximately 35,000 square feet. Green Hills Library Center offers a community programming room, children and teen areas, a story time room, and meeting and collaboration rooms for public use.
Helix Architecture + Design collaborated with Sapp Design Architects to support MCPL’s design and construction of new destination branches that target specific needs in the community. Green Hills was designed to be a cutting-edge culinary literacy center and the culinary center area is set to open later this year. The culinary center will house a demonstration kitchen with seating for programs and classes as well as a commercial kitchen space that will be available for food-based businesses. This destination branch will promote literacy through food – they will offer guest appearances by specialty chefs, help to improve patron health by inspiring people to prepare healthy meals, and incorporate a play area that features healthy produce to also extend the culinary education offerings to children.
Delivering the Bomanite Promise – Again
Working previously on the MCPL Colbern Road Library Center with contractor JE Dunn Construction, Bomanite Licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors was again enlisted to install Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems, this time featuring Bomanite Renaissance custom polished concrete. Renaissance by Bomanite provides a lustrous finish to floors made with premium Bomanite Integral Color. The primary benefit to Bomanite Renaissance is the simplicity of installation. With no topical dyes or products needed to achieve color in the floor, the process is much like polishing uncolored concrete, making the system more efficient to install compared to other more labor-intensive coloring systems. Renaissance by Bomanite is intended primarily for new construction or major renovation projects and was the perfect choice to create a durable and decorative flooring surface inside the Green Hills Library Center.
Seamless Design Flow
Musselman & Hall placed and polished 2,200 SF of Bomanite Renaissance deep grind polished concrete. They also installed a cast-in-place bench that is bisected by a glass curtain wall separating the café from the exterior patio. To create a unified aesthetic from inside the library café to the exterior, they installed an 1,800 SF outdoor patio to match the design of the interior floor. The patio was framed with a band of Bomanite Revealed, one of the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems applications.
Bomanite Revealed is suited for exterior applications—anywhere that improved wear resistance for light to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary. Due to the use of the Bomanite Revealed binder, these highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, making it ideal to create the seamless design from the exterior hardscape to the interior flooring finish at Green Hills Library Center.
Award Winning Decorative Concrete
Customizing and tailoring Bomanite Systems to a specific project allows designers, architects, and owners to have a measure of control over the quality and finished product of their designs. Musselman & Hall gives designers the ability to select concrete construction materials installed according to specific construction means and methods, which translates directly to the quality of the finished product. Green Hills Library Center features two superb Bomanite product installations by Musselman & Hall. The installations of Bomanite Renaissance and Bomanite Revealed integrate seamlessly and provide a stunning result, which earned Musselman & Hall Contractors the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project. Their versatile design resulted in an interior flooring surface and exterior hardscape surface that provide durability and offer a beautiful aesthetic for library patrons to admire as they explore the new library and its many innovative features and offerings.

Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC received the 2022 GRAND AWARD for BestBomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project for their exceptionally challenging project at the Omaha Riverfront Revitalization in Omaha, NE. The daunting challenge for this project was the degree of difficulty using our Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and 8,200 SF of Bomanite Revealed bonded overlay over existing walls and stairs to reconstruct three urban parks along the riverfront. Dan Kroesen of Musselman and Hall Contractors said, “This project challenged us to think and work creatively to build a project we take great pride in.”
Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC also captured the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project for MCPL Green Hills located in Kansas City, MO. They exceed the goal of this project which was to create a seamless design between the interior Cafe and the outdoor patio. That concept ultimately resulted in a cast-in-place bench that is bisected by a glass curtain wall separating the Café from the exterior patio. Using Bomanite Renaissance, with deep grind, they placed and polished 2,200 SF of flooring in the Library Café and installed an 1,800 SF patio outside to match the aesthetics of the interior flooring.
And to top off their trifecta of awards, Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC received the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Specialty Project for Rolla University Drive Realignment in Rolla, MO. Using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture they constructed a large 15,000 SF oblong roundabout decorative concrete island. They then created a 15” hexagon template to Sandblast the color hardener from the surface in a very specific pattern. The Sandblasting alone took two weeks and required a high level of detail and workmanship to Sandblast the linear hexagon pattern around an oblong roundabout without misalignment of ending and stopping points.
Heritage Bomanite took home the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project for NX Restaurant in Fresno, CA. Utilizing the Bomanite Patène Artectura System, they created very intricate interior flooring consisting of 2,865 SF of custom color and brass terrazzo strips installed with incredible accuracy to make them look like continuous lengths. Polishing was completed once an artist had applied the concrete stain to create the ocean effect of waves lapping onto a sandy beach.
Carolina Bomanite Corporation earned the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project for Wilson Center for Nature at Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC. This popular tourist destination is located about halfway up Grandfather Mountain and the project doubled the size of the original Nature Museum. The installation began in the early spring and was on a tight schedule for completion before the tourist season beginning in early summer. The crew often encountered fog, sleet, snow, freezing rain and bright sunshine all in the same day. The pattern chosen was Slate Texture and the project also highlights Custom Patterns of Deer, Racoon, Bear, Eagle, and Turkey Prints.

The Colbern Road Library Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri is one of over 30 library service outlets in the Mid-Continent Public Library district. Originally opening in 1993 and after many years of use by its beloved patrons, the Colbern Road branch was due for a revamp, including an addition to accommodate new programming and technological features.
The new Colbern Road Library Center offers a significantly larger children’s section, additional meeting rooms and seating, co-working and collaboration spaces, an extensive community room, and an area that presents small business services to entrepreneurs and people exploring different careers.
Imagination to Realization
Imagining what the new library could be, project designers at Sapp Design Architects reminisced about passing notes as children, which ultimately led to the idea of paper airplanes. This theme resonated with the owner and played into the programs slated for the new library center. All facets of design relate back to the folded paper airplane, including the large screen wall façade that greets patrons as they enter and the multi-colored airplanes that offer way-finding clues throughout the library.
To further embellish the design theme, Bomanite Licensee Musselman and Hall Contractors was selected to employ Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems by installing Bomanite VitraFlor. Bomanite VitraFlor is the standard system that all other Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems are based on. Utilizing select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to the standards required for decorative polished concrete, ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, and then polished to the required gloss level, Bomanite VitraFlor was the optimal choice to create a paste polish finish on the slab placed by the concrete contractor.
Delivering the Bomanite Promise
To further emphasize the library’s theme after the concrete finishing process was completed, Musselman and Hall engraved a host of paper airplane outlines into the surface. These intricate engravings mimic the acrylic paper planes that fly overhead throughout the library and add distinct detail that is not only eye-catching but further enhances the architectural design and embellishments.
As demonstrated here with Bomanite VitraFlor, even the results on gray concrete are stunning. Bomanite promises that all concrete can be functional and stylish and Musselman and Hall’s stellar installation and craftsmanship delivered that promise. Musselman and Hall Contractors want to help you achieve the exact look you imagine using the most exceptional products and techniques. They did exactly that at Colbern Road Library Center by executing a polished concrete installation featuring eye-catching paper airplane engravings that fully enhance and complement the library’s theme.
Healthpeak Properties is an innovative company at the forefront of providing premium real estate to the dynamic healthcare industry and is committed to delivering value to their shareholders, customers, and employees. Their tenancy at the amazing 50 FIFTY DTC comes as no surprise considering the Class AAA 12-story office tower boasts elegance and sophistication with beautiful lines and amazing architectural features. The complex offers office spaces with floor-to-ceiling glass, lightwells that provide natural light in every office and core space, breathtaking views, and luxury amenities.
Curated Partnerships Equate to Design Success with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems
Looking to create an impressive office space for their Denver based location, Healthpeak Properties partnered with Acquilano Interior Architecture to develop finish plans for the interior spaces. Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes was brought in to work with Acquilano and general contractor Boots Construction to discuss options for installing the polished concrete flooring in a substantial section of the overall space.
Healthpeak Properties wanted to achieve the minimalistic look of an architectural polished flooring surface but with uniform aggregate exposure. Since polished concrete does not guarantee uniformity, and because there was existing flooring to work with, Colorado Hardscapes proposed to place 5,597 SF of gray Bomanite Modena Monolithic, one of Bomanite’s revolutionary Custom Polishing Systems. Modena Monolithic by Bomanite is an engineered interior cementitious topping that is blended with selected aggregates, in this case 1/4” to 3/4” in size, and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level.
As Complications are Conquered, Design Dreams are Delivered
Although a simple mix, this office space had a few complications to work around. First, this space exists on the 8th floor, meaning all materials and equipment had to be moved to the 8th level. Additionally, the elevator lobby and bathroom were recessed for tile requiring Colorado Hardscapes to fill in the recesses with an inch of repair mortar before installing the Bomanite Modena Monolithic. Finally, the flooring would be placed before Boots Construction built any of the walls. Due to this technicality, Colorado Hardscapes had to form everywhere besides the elevator room and bathroom and widen the Bomanite Modena Monolithic an extra 4-8 inches next to where each wall would be placed.
These added steps are not something that would normally be encountered during the process, but the resulting flooring surface is nothing but spectacular, measuring up to any Modena installation by Colorado Hardscapes. To honor the existing joints, several sections of aluminum strip inlays were placed, and the floors were polished to an 800-grit, level 3 finish to achieve a slight reflection without being overly slippery. Colorado Hardscapes provided the perfect solution using Bomanite’s systems and products while accommodating the client’s needs and creating the dream office Healthpeak Properties desired.
What does a Leap of Faith look like? It begins with a situation like Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) faced in April 2020. A $14 million building had been three years in the making and was yet to be built. With donations earmarked and targeted to cover the construction already in the bucket, the project was pending the issuance of city permits. The permitting process had been delayed because of incredibly significant growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The COVID pandemic struck March 15, 2020, and three weeks later the final permits from the city of Dallas were issued. Not knowing when things would get back to normal, the only logical conclusion was a Leap of Faith by DTS, and the building project started in May.
Dallas Theological Seminary is a highly esteemed and recognized seminary with locations all over the country and in Europe. Texas Bomanite was asked by the main contractor, Hill & Wilkinson, to provide Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems decorative concrete flooring throughout DTS’s new chapel and student center. Bomanite Polished concrete was selected so that it would remain both beautiful and durable against the high foot traffic the chapel and student building anticipated on a daily basis.
Beautiful Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Define Durable Decorative Concrete
The patented technology of the Bomanite Custom Polishing System chemically reacts with the concrete to lock in the color, and the mechanical application closes the surface to keep out contaminants. One application, permanent results. Lustrous color, protected by a tight, beautiful sheen. The Bomanite Custom Polishing System offers exceptional resistance to slipping, abrasion and impact. Available in finishes from satin to gloss, finished surfaces also repel water and oil and are dust-proof. This finish does not require replacement, recoating, or waxing and thus is superior to limited-life coatings. The non-toxic, non-flammable and odorless application is environmentally friendly. And surface care is user-friendly as routine cleaning will maintain luster.
The Bomanite Custom Polishing VitraFlor System was chosen for this project. Texas Bomanite installed over 13,000 SF of (Class D – Large Aggregate Exposed) Bomanite Polished Concrete at an 800-Grit finish. Bomanite VitraFlor is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with Bomanite VitraFinish for protection. The primary benefit of Bomanite VitraFlor is the simplicity of installation and durability of the finished floor, lending to low-maintenance and long-term sustainable features. VitraFlor by Bomanite is intended primarily for new construction or major renovation projects. Now even ordinary concrete can live up to Bomanite’s promise that all concrete can be functional and stylish.

Homeowners want their house to make more than just a purposeful and deliberate statement, they want it to evoke an emotional response. This New Hampshire house goes far beyond that baseline by making a proclamation of being a chic and sophisticated, sumptuous living space. The homeowner achieved that goal by installing spectacularly gorgeous decorative concrete flooring, but it was journey. He had a very specific image of his floor in his mind. The basement floor had already been poured using the wrong integral color. He wanted more of a beige. So, he contracted Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction, LLC for a solution to the problem. After a discussion with the homeowner, it was agreed that a Bomanite Modena SL system would be used for that area – a perfect solution for this scenario.
Five-Star Show-Stopper Interior Flooring
The first floor had yet to be poured. Premier Concrete Construction worked with the existing concrete contractor to install the Bomanite Belcolore color hardener during the actual concrete pour of the first floor. Premier Concrete Construction returned several weeks later to begin the polishing necessary for an installation of the Bomanite Custom Polishing System using Bomanite Belcolore. The specifications were a low gloss with very minimal exposure, almost to a cream level. The downstairs Bomanite Modena SL system was completed first and then Premier Concrete Construction began the multiple sets of stairs and the first floor to match the basement level. They ended up having to use some dye coloring after initial grinding on the first floor to get the color just right.
Bomanite Systems Define Decorative Concrete
Bomanite Modena SL is engineered, and factory blended to be polished. Bomanite Modena SL is a polymer-modified, cementitious interior bonded floor topping that is blended with selected decorative aggregates then placed with no finishing. Bomanite Modena SL also uses hard quartz aggregates to fill in the gaps around the softer decorative aggregates, allowing it to maintain that hard polished surface naturally rather than relying on waxes or floor finishes. Once fully cured Bomanite Modena SL is ground to expose the aggregates and polished to the desired gloss level. Bomanite Modena SL can be installed over concrete or properly prepared wood substrates, with cove base and stair components generally pre-cast. Bomanite Modena SL is engineered to work best with aggregates such as granite, glass, marble, porcelain, etc. that range from 1/16” to 1/8” in size. Bomanite Modena SL may be integrally colored in a wide range of options and unlike comparable self-leveling toppings, Bomanite Modena SL is designed to have additional aggregates added prior to being ground and polished. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low-to-zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, unmatched durability and strength, Bomanite Modena SL is the optimal choice for highly decorative concrete and even for renewed surfaces.
The Belcolore by Bomanite System incorporates Bomanite Color Hardener onto the concrete at the time of placement. Once cured the concrete is lightly ground to expose variegated amounts of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist. The primary benefits to Bomanite Belcolore are the range of colors available, the fine aggregate characteristics and the excellent durability of color. The unique look of a polished, color hardened floor sets Belcolore by Bomanite apart from other conventional concrete polishing systems. The key to color hardened floors is surface density and pigment loading. The select quartz aggregates, polymers and cement content significantly increase the abrasion resistance of a Belcolore by Bomanite floor over conventional concrete – especially concrete made with softer, less abrasion resistant aggregates such as limestone. A higher pigment loading combined with white cement-based formulations such as utilized with Bomanite Color Hardener results in consistent color throughout the floor. Alternately multiple colors can be broadcast and incorporated into the concrete creating a mottled, highly variegated appearance. In either case the use of color hardener negates the appearance of coarse sands and stone along with the effect of raw material variations common to ready-mixed concrete. The system chemically closes surface pores and mechanically polishes the floor, locking down color beneath an impenetrable shine.
Award Winning Decorative Concrete
Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction, LLC is renowned for their consistent commitment to detail, their problem-solving prowess, and their skilled decorative concrete craftsmanship. It is little wonder this project garnered them the 2021 Bronze Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project. They relished the challenge of solving a color issue for new concrete and working with the homeowner to help him realize the vision that existed in his mind and imagination of his own flooring. The solution they provided is an eco-friendly, durable, low-maintenance, high-performing, breathtaking work of concrete art, sure to bring this stakeholder a sense of satisfaction and enjoyment for years to come. The statement his house now makes is sleek and stylish and aesthetically beautifully bold.

Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Deliver the Best Flooring Finish
Musselman & Hall Contractors was the preferred decorative concrete provider for this project and utilized Bomanite VitraFlor to create the custom polished concrete flooring. VitraFlor by Bomanite is the standard system by which all other Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems are based. VitraFlor utilizes select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to standards required for decorative polished concrete flooring. The concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist. Bomanite VitraFlor provides superior durability and functionality that made it the optimal choice for the installation at Cornerstone Elementary.
Bomanite Licensees Are Decorative Concrete Experts
While the school was still in early design development, Musselman & Hall worked with project designer Incite Design Studio to develop a custom seeded aggregate finish for portions of the school’s interior flooring surfaces. After several rounds of samples, the designers settled on a blend of white, orange, and black natural aggregates from Cactus Canyon quarries. Musselman & Hall was able to push this project even further by displacing a large precast house and producing the matching precast treads on site.
Given that the stair treads were cast in house, Musselman & Hall had to make sure their loadings were all correct for the decorative aggregate seeding in the cafeteria. The foreman was provided with takeoffs showing square footages of specific areas, from which he preloaded the aggregates into buckets in amounts specific to that surface area to ensure that each area of the wide-open cafeteria was seeded consistently and accurately. Their attention to detail and precision guaranteed a spectacular finished flooring surface that coordinated perfectly with the pre-cast stairs.
Award Winning Decorative Concrete
Musselman and Hall Contractors is renowned for their expertise in decorative concrete, helping their clients achieve the exact look they’ve imagined while using the most exceptional products and techniques. With a decorative concrete team that remains on the cutting edge of the concrete industry, it’s no wonder that Musselman & Hall’s impressive installation of Bomanite VitraFlor at Cornerstone Elementary earned them the 2021 Silver Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project. Their expert installation of VitraFlor custom polished concrete at Cornerstone Elementary has provided an easy to maintain and durable flooring surface with beautiful, seeded aggregates and a stunning sheen, adding distinct detail and dramatic flair while creating a beautiful feature inside the school.
