Client Need:
Concrete paving is very prominent on this project, and the designers needed to be sure that the finished product met all of their specifications for the high profile center of the Stapleton Redevelopment. The hardscapes needed to integrate with real stone in the city center and lend consistency and beauty to the rest of the walkways, patios and plazas along the street.
Solution:
Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Colorado Hardscapes, walked the property and worked closely with designers to determine their needs. With the Sandscape Texture® by Bomanite system and the superior craftsmenship of Colorado Hardscapes, the team was able to install the job to the quality necessary of the project.
Results:
Colorado Hardscapes worked with both Mortenson and Saunders on different sections around the Stapleton Town Center, including paving for patios and sidewalks along 29th Ave. Black banding and special “V” saw-cuts distinguish special areas along 29th Ave. Near the water features at the town center real stones were integrated into theBomanite Sandscape Texture around the perimeter. The Visitors Center features a multi-colored Bomanite Micro-Top interior floor.

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION
Description:
The Florida Turnpike Service Plaza Project, a multiyear renovation program, directed by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, consisted of decorative concrete installations that included walkway and plaza areas outside service station and restaurant facilities that started with the original 1950’s Turnpike stations; Turkey Lake, Canoe Creek, Fort Drum, West Palm Beach and finally Pompano Beach. Bomanite Licensee, Edwards Concrete placed and finished imprinted concrete at the plazas, applied a variety of colors, and in some cases seeded recycled, colored glass into landscape borders. It was a major transformation in that the old concrete at the service plazas had been plain gray.
The turnpike, one of the busiest highways in the nation, is formally named the Ronald Reagan Turnpike. Brett Nein, manager of landscape architecture for Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. that provided design services for the service-plaza projects noted that the existing service plazas didn’t meet the standards of the traveling public of the 21st Century. Three primary design themes were created to connect all of the facilities; water, sun and earth (or land). From these themes, the designers and Edwards Concrete interpreted the conceptual vision of the architectural firm directing the total project, Zyscovich, using concrete colors and decorative patterns for the hardscape materials.
Bomanite Imprint Systems integrate both personality and product, crafting solutions to bring ideas to life. Whether building a stunning shopping center, beautiful plaza, captivating courtyard or high-end office suite, Bomanite Imprint Systems offer the owners and designers who possess the vision the creative freedom they need to make their project unique in design, color and texture.
When the design team at Archicon, LC, embarked on the creation of “The Citadelle”, a grand, 10-acre multi-use facility located in Northern Glendale, AZ, they knew exactly who to call for the exterior decorative concrete application—Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Progressive Hardscapes. Working with Mike Riggs, of Progressive Hardscapes, in the early planning stages and throughout all of the design phases of the project allowed the design team to create not only an innovative facility, but a distinctive facility with detail and high end appeal. Riggs assisted the architects and designers as they integrated more complexity and creativity into their hardscape designs. With the ultimate goal of creating a visually pleasing, high-status center filled with fantastic shops, gourmet cuisine, unique office spaces and studios to help put Glendale “on the map” as a more upscale city, it was determined that a variety of Bomanite’s most intricate patterns and textures for the exterior concrete courtyards and plazas be used.
With the 90,596 sq. ft. challenge at hand, it was up to Progressive Hardscapes to bring the exterior vision of the complex to life. Utilizing an assortment of textures from the Bomanite Imprint Systems collection in combination with a variety of colors and installation techniques, the grand scale of the Citadelle project started to take shape. Bomanite Slate Texture sandblasted with Bomanite Sand Color Hardener was used for 70% of the field. The Slate Texture was also used for a variety of pathways saw cut 24”x24” and colored with Bomanite Carmel Color Hardener. Bomanite Granite Texture and Mexican Tile (2’ bands) were also used for a few pathways and walks within the facility. Various stamped and colored accent bands were used around the fountain and tree perimeters, as well as additional paths and sidewalks. With a multitude of other Bomanite patterns and textures integrated into the project throughout, the Progressive Hardscapes team successfully created an intricate interplay of color and decorative concrete design into the overall exterior hardscape of the project. The architects and designers on the project wanted Progressive Hardscapes to “bring their vision to life”…and that’s exactly what they did.

Description:
Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Carolina Bomanite, began working with Winston-Salem, N.C. Architects Dishner Moore more than a year in advance of the construction of this urban village of luxury condos, shops and dining in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Architect, Craig Dishner, “had a vision of creating a spectacular plaza design to be viewed and enjoyed at street level and above from the residential tenants”. After several mock-ups were completed and reviewed, a decision was made to use Bomanite’s Micro-Top as the topically applied coloration system over a custom “machine-swirl” integrally colored surface design for the plaza. Negotiations began with the General Contractor, Resolute Builders, to be the prime decorative flatwork contractor for this project. Carolina Bomanite had previously worked with the developer, East West Partners on other projects.
The initial phase began with the installation of the main entrance roundabout granite textured curb, along with 8000sf of dry-shake color- hardened Bomacron® Fishscale Granite Setts pattern paving. The curb was poured with an integral color at a low slump, hand shaped, then textured and barcut to resemble hand-placed granite. The ADA warning strip that followed the outer contour of the roundabout posed several problems. First, the original design called for a stamped pattern using geometric shapes. We soon realized that this would be both an installation, and aesthetic issue when installed. Carolina Bomanite quickly suggested a hand-tooled, grooved pattern that followed the radius of the contour. After several calls and letters to the town of Chapel Hill, an approval was given to install the grooved pattern. All parties agreed, this was an excellent solution to a difficult problem.
The plaza, a 25,000sf parking and mixed use space, was designed not only to be parking, but also become an entertainment venue on weekends and evenings. The decorative topping slab was designed to be a 4-7” integrally colored slab with the special “swirl” finish. High summer temperatures made working on this sub-slab almost unbearable. The decision was made to convert the 10-man crew to night work with forming beginning at 11:00pm and the first of 2 pours at 2-3:00am each morning. A cast-in-place stage with cascading steps was the first pour of this phase of the project, followed with several hundred ft. of ADA warning bands. Since the deck was previously waterproofed, all forms were set using sandbags for support. Only 2 finishers were allowed to complete the custom “machine-swirl” pattern in order to keep consistency throughout the project. After the plaza was installed, the 4-man finish crew came in to begin the layout and sawcut of the plaza design. A template was used to layout the geometric shapes. Precise layouts from the GC’s site superintendent Chris Hardee allowed the design to go in precisely to plan. After a thorough cleaning, the Bomanite® Micro-Top product was installed in a “reddish” color to compliment the decorative brick design used on the buildings exterior. Water based sealers were then applied to protect the colored areas.

Description:
Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Bay Area Concretes, Inc. installed 17,000 square feet of new 4” & 5” thick architectural concrete paving over 4” of sub base materials for The Fillmore Center Plaza Hardsape Renovation. Reinforcement with #4 steel rebar and dowels at all paving intersections provided the extra durability for this outdoor plaza located in San Francisco, CA. Architecturally finished cast-in-place color hardened concrete walls were installed up to 12’ high, as well as custom concrete radius seatwalls and a custom Cobalt Blue concrete fountain utilizing laser cut form materials and custom finishing tools to provide a distinctive and lively look for the nearby residents.
Bay Area Concretes employed a special exotic aggregate surface finishing technique involving the use of recycled Glass Aggregates in blue at the fountain area, red and green in the plaza area, and also a large custom green Malaysian rock blend in the highlight bands of the Plaza. The aggregate surface and the Bomanite hardscape paving was designed by AXIS Architecture + Design, in unison with Bay Area Concretes. AXIS developed design guidelines to encourage upscale retailers and food service providers to intensify and enliven the pedestrian experience of this mixed-use residential community occupying 3 city blocks.
Exposed aggregate blended paving types are typically placed over the surface of newly placed full thickness concrete at approximately 1/4”-3/8” thickness – the same day gray concrete is placed. The surface is then revealed and sealed. Bomacron Slate texture and cream color hardeners were used in the perimeter paving areas that surround the main Plaza, as well as city sidewalks in the streets of San Francisco, providing a monolithic, reinforced design and color-hardened surface of structural integrity and surface strength for hotels, theme parks, restaurants, office buildings, retail centers, and single or multi-family homes. Saw cuts were made to form the bands of design and to create a distinguished look of the alternating exposed surfaces and imprinted concrete. This newly renovated Plaza offers outdoor concerts, movies, and weekly Farmers Market to the community.

Looking to combat wear and tear to add service life to their floor, reduce costly maintenance and create a custom designed surface to set their showroom apart, Tri-Sport found Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems to be the answer.
Working with designer Suzanne Byrnes of Facility Designs, Heritage Bomanite was able to create a custom floor finish to meet Tri-Sport’s design expectations. Utilizing Renaissance by Bomanite™, a system from the Bomanite Custom Polishing collection that provides a lustrous finish with Bomanite’s premium Integral Color blends, the Heritage team set out to accomplish the task at hand. First, the Heritage team poured Black Bomanite Integral Color next to the gray concrete to create a flowing design throughout the store. A custom stainless steel logo was then made and set into the freshly poured concrete near the entry door. The Heritage crew then placed bicycle chain rings in the concrete throughout the store and sprinkled colored glass in various areas to create a distinctive decorative effect. Once the concrete was cured, the team polished the concrete to 3000 grit, exposing the metal and glass elements. Bomanite StainGuard was then applied after the polishing was complete.
Utilizing the in-depth skill, equipment and concrete artistry of Heritage Bomanite’s craftsmen, Tri-Sport was able to create a retail display space that is not only durable and easy to maintain, but is unique and bright that accents their merchandise and apparel.
