Texas Bomanite Transforms Two Elementary Schools

Buildings have a life span, but more importantly they often have an earlier shelf life, as was the case for two elementary schools in Central Texas.  The Del Valle ISD (Independent School District) is a public educational district located in the Del Valle area, which is an unincorporated part of Travis County, TX.  This district provides educational services to a significant portion of southeast Travis County.  The district encompasses several incorporated communities, including Creedmoor, Webberville, the majority of Mustang Ridge, and some sections of Austin.  In conjunction with the 2019 voter approved Bond proposition, and an architecture schematic subsequently created by Pfluger Architects, Del Valle ISD contracted American Constructors as the General Contractor to demolish and replace two of the district’s oldest campuses, Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary and Smith Elementary.  American Constructors selected Texas Bomanite to install the decorative concrete in both schools.

Texas Bomanite was asked by American Constructors to provide over 70,000 SF of Diamond Polished, Dyed, and stamped concrete throughout the elementary school for each of the schools.  The project scope and timeline took three months to complete and included an initial mockup for each school prior to installation, 1500 grit polished concrete with Salt and Pepper aggregate exposure, a dyed concrete geometric design throughout the floors, and a school logo unique to each school.  The colors used for the geometric floor design were Sweet Potato, Black Orchid, Pineapple, Blueberry, Pine Green, and Turquoise.  The decorative concrete chosen for both of the installations were Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite VitraFlor and Bomanite Patène Teres, Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Patène Artectura, and Bomanite Imprint Systems.

Many Systems Many Satisfied Stakeholders

The Bomanite Custom Polishing System’s patented technology, when combined with Bomanite’s renowned color and craftsmanship, results in the finest concrete floor finish in the industry.  The process involves a polish that chemically bonds with the concrete, locking in the color, while the mechanical application seals the surface, preventing contaminants from penetrating.  One application, permanent results.  Lustrous color, protected by a tight, beautiful sheen.

The Bomanite Custom Polishing System is offered in a range of finishes, from satin to gloss, and provides outstanding slip, abrasion, and impact resistance.  Surfaces treated with this system are also water and oil-repellent, as well as dust-proof.  Unlike coatings with a limited lifespan, this finish does not necessitate replacement, recoating, or waxing.  Its application is safe for the environment, being non-toxic, non-flammable, and odorless.  Additionally, maintaining the surface’s shine is easy with routine cleaning, making it user-friendly.

The Bomanite Custom Polishing System VitraFlor, even when applied to gray concrete, can yield remarkable results.  This system, which is the foundation for all other Bomanite systems, can be used on both new and existing uncolored concrete.  With Bomanite VitraFlor, Bomanite fulfills its promise of making all concrete both functional and fashionable.  The process includes initial grinding, hardening with Bomanite Stabilizer Pro, honing, and polishing, capped off with protection from Bomanite VitraFinish.  Of all the Bomanite Custom Polishing systems, Bomanite VitraFlor is the most cost-effective option, mainly intended for new construction or extensive renovations.

Meanwhile, the Bomanite Patène Teres system is designed to color fully cured concrete during the polishing process, using Bomanite Chemical Stains and Bomanite Concrete Dyes. Starting with a base of uncolored gray concrete, which may include Bomanite Integral Color or Bomanite Color Hardener applied during placement, the floor undergoes grinding, staining, or dyeing, and then follows the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System process. The key advantage of Bomanite Patène Teres lies in its ability to introduce a wide spectrum of topical colors to concrete. When combined with skilled saw cutting techniques for patterns or designs, this process can elevate concrete to a form of art, offering a range from simple monochromatic tones to bright, vibrant hues and a variety of finishes from urban sophistication to varied, rustic styles.  Like Bomanite VitraFlor, Bomanite Patène Teres is primarily aimed at new construction or major renovation projects.

Stained Concrete Creates Ocean Lapping Sandy Beach

Heritage Bomanite installed Bomanite Patène Artectura decorative concrete for Saizon Restaurant in Fresno, CA.The project was new construction of a new Restaurant.  First, Heritage Bomanite had to grind and prime the area.  Secondly, they installed Brass Terrazzo strips with incredible accuracy to make sure they looked like continuous lengths.  Heritage Bomanite then installed the Bomanite Patène Artectura decorative concrete.  Polishing was completed once an Artist had applied the concrete stain to create the ocean effect lapping on to a sandy beach.  Finding the right level of shine and sand beach effect, using several applications of sealer, to the satisfaction of all project stakeholders, was one of the most difficult aspects of the project.

Musselman and Hall Create Bomanite Con-Color Exposed Aggregate Splash Pad for Historic Foot District

Community Park, located in Jefferson City, MO is a 3.5-acre neighborhood park that children and adults alike are enjoying. Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department opened the much-needed renovated park before officially complete so that residents could start exploring the park features for family outings and outdoor getaways. Landworks Studio, LLC provided master planning and construction documentation services as part of a complete renovation to meet the needs of the nearby residents. The master plan showcases the history of the surrounding Historic Foot District and offers design elements to bring a diverse population together to participate in outdoor activities and gatherings.

A Place to Gather and Play

Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC finished the work needed on the Community Park in Jefferson City, Mo with colorful concrete using the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with Bomanite Con-Color for a fun splash pad for everyone to enjoy.Community Park is unrecognizable from its former life as an empty grass plot, it has now been turned into a modern play area that includes a large climbing feature made of a complex web of ropes with a tall metal tube slide that takes center stage. Along one side runs a pair of zip lines, a unique style of teeter-totter, large net swings, interactive play sculptures, obstacle course-type with climbing bars and platforms, toddler’s play mounds and climbing logs are additional features found within the park. The full park is covered in turf, including a small hill with two built-in slides. The park has two pavilions on either side of the restroom buildings that provide shade for individuals or groups. Continuing with the decorative and fun design some of the tabletops under the shelter were given a checkerboard pattern treatment.

Colorful Splash pad Represents Historic Foot District

Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC finished the work needed on the Community Park in Jefferson City, Mo with colorful concrete using the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with Bomanite Con-Color for a fun splash pad for everyone to enjoy.Closest to the parking lot is the cooling colorful splash pad with multiple jets of water shooting out of the ground. The water is on a minute-long timer to save water when it’s not being used, but nearby are three buttons on pedestals to turn them right back on when they’re in use. In order to complete the splash pad design and ready it for use, Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC were called in to put the finishing touches in place. Landworks Studio had specified a Bomanite exposed aggregate finish with several Bomanite concrete stains, the local winning bid contractor, Sircal Contracting, was unable to fulfill the Bomanite specification portion therefore they formed and installed the gray bands while Musselman & Hall finished up the 995 square foot pour with Bomanite Sandscape® Texture colored with seven different Bomanite Con-Color penetrating stains in Beech, Coal Gray, Mist Green, Paprika, Steel Blue, Travertine Beige and Sienna. Stencils were applied to create the historical representation of the foot district.

Bomanite Artistic Concrete Awarded Gold for Vertically Stained Concrete Panels for Multi-Generational Center

The Beast Urban Park in El Paso, TX, recently renamed from Eastside Regional Park, has completed Phase I of a 92-acre development. Once completely finished it will be the largest city operated park in the area. Featuring world-class aquatic amenities, the Beast Urban Park brings much needed public facilities to a residential community that grew faster than anticipated and greatly outpaced recreational resources. The new, three-part complex will include a state-of-the-art natatorium with a 50-meter competition swimming pool, a multi-generational community center with a gymnasium and multipurpose classrooms, and an outdoor waterpark highlighted by El Paso’s first wave simulator. All of these facilities will be surrounded by a landscaped walking path and public art. With Perkins + Will Architects selected for the Phase 1 Design, Sundt Construction was contracted for the build.

Among the project’s many complexities, assembling the building form of the recreation center had been a puzzle of literal proportions. Constructed of concrete tilt-up panels, Sundt Construction leveraged their knowledge of concrete, as the panels were constructed on-site, framed, reinforced, cast, and erected as the building’s primary structure and exterior skin.

“The challenge in these precast panels begins with their unusual shape,” shares Sundt Construction Project Manager Enrique Esplain, of the Z-shaped monolithic, exterior wall sections, which are 40 feet tall and 18 feet wide. “We are used to casting concrete panels this large, but the awkward angles made them hard to lift and hard to erect. Color is also an issue. There is an inconsistency received on the finish with site-cast concrete. This is based on placement, weather, casting techniques, timing, and application of curing compounds and bond breakers. The City didn’t want grey concrete, so we needed to come up with something that feels very much like El Paso.”

Colorized concrete can be achieved in many different ways including adding an integral color to the concrete mix before it is poured or applying any of many different types of dyes, paints, or stains to the concrete after it has cured. Initially, in El Paso, the design called for using an integral color, which is one of the most common ways of adding color to concrete. By adding color pigment admixtures to the concrete before it is poured, contractors are generally able to create a layered sense of color that results in a multi-tonal appearance similar to natural stone. After developing two different 3’ x3’ panel mock-ups using integral color mixes that didn’t secure the City of El Paso’s approval, the Sundt team recommended trying a stain instead.

Bomanite Artistic Concrete colored the Bomanite chemically stained concrete wall panels installed by Sundt Construction for the Eastside Regional Park Rec Center known as the Beast Urban Park by the community of El Paso.Sundt Construction approached Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite Artistic Concrete, about doing an acid stain on the concrete panels for the Beast Urban Park. Bomanite Artistic Concrete was thrilled with the opportunity to participate in such a dynamic public commission. The process of staining the panels began with clearly establishing the city’s desired aesthetic, which was less than exact in the beginning. Bomanite Artistic Concrete’s President Aaron Echaniz noted that “the City wanted a treatment that made the panels fit in with the surrounding landscape but also complements the unique, very modern architecture. We did several different mock-ups before finally settling on a treatment that falls somewhere between deep rust and old leather.”

Bomanite Artistic Concrete colored the Bomanite chemically stained concrete wall panels installed by Sundt Construction for the Eastside Regional Park Rec Center known as the Beast Urban Park by the community of El Paso. The chosen solution was Bomanite’s Patène Artectura System, a topically-applied coloration system that simulates a semi-weathered, antiquing effect. Because the acid-based stain was to be applied to the panels once they were tilted-up in their final place, the process for staining them had to be dialed in and approved before the work could begin. Using a compressor and an industrial sprayer, the acid-based Patène Artectura was sprayed on the vertical panels by hand working from the top down. Workers had to be very mindful of maintaining a consistent distance between the sprayer and the panels to eliminate unintended blotching while troweling away any drips.

“On the technical side, one thing that was really important was prepping each panel to receive the stain,” says Echaniz of the process’s potential complications. Burs were carefully scraped off panels before each was thoroughly sandblasted to open the concrete’s pores so that the stain could fully penetrate the surface. Once the stain was applied, an acrylic sealant was added to give the colorized panels a fade-free permanence that will last a lifetime in El Paso’s arid climate.

“We are very proud to be a part of this magnificent project” finishes Echaniz of his firm’s role in El Paso’s newest park, which is expected to open to the public in 2021. “Craftsmanship is very important in our work and this community-enhancing project is going to bring a lot of joy to the people of El Paso for generations to come.”

Bomanite Artistic Concrete received the Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project for their dedication in exceptional solutions to concrete challenges of all sorts and scales.

Architectural Concrete and Design Installed this Nature Inspired Backyard Deck with Bomanite Decorative Concrete

The homeowners of a private residence in Sandy, Utah worked with Bomanite Licensee, Architectural Concrete & Design for their backyard pool and patio hardscape. This outdoor area has a spacious pool deck, waterfall feature, fire pit, several patio areas and stairs that received a cohesive decorative concrete design using the Bomanite Imprint System with several standout coloring techniques.

Architectural Concrete and Design Installed this Nature Inspired Patio, Pool Deck, Fire Pit and Stairs in a Beautiful Stamped Concrete Slate TextureThe pool deck and upper patio were poured and the concrete colored with Bomanite Coquina Color Hardener and then a sweat textured finish was applied. Once the color hardened concrete was cured, multiple coats of Bomanite Chemical Stain in Pine and Ebony were applied and then to create the grid design, sawcuts were made in a 4′ 6″ pattern. The pool coping and waterfall feature were stained to compliment the rock surround on the waterfall.

Architectural Concrete and Design Installed this Nature Inspired Patio, Pool Deck, Fire Pit and Stairs in a Beautiful Stamped Concrete Slate TextureThe lower patio deck, stairs and fire pit were stamped with the Bomacron Slate Texture mat to provide a simple separation but collective design with the pool deck area. Bomanite Desert Tan Color Hardener and several Bomanite Release Agents in Autumn Brown, Light Brown and Mexican Tile were applied.

The homeowners were thrilled with the overall Bomanite backyard design and how it complimented and integrated with the landscaping of rock walls, creek beds and walking paths.

Bomanite of Tulsa Achieves Architects Design Intent with Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System

Local Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite of Tulsa, Inc. installed the exterior decorative concrete walkway and front entry for the newly constructed Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice. The 150,000-square-foot Family Center has three main components. The Juvenile Court, Juvenile Bureau and the multiple agencies that support them are in a two-story building on the west side of the property. The detention facility, with its gym, classrooms and other components, are on the east side. In between sits a courtyard and recreation area that includes a basketball hoop and sports courts.

Bomanite of Tulsa, placed artistic decorative concrete walkways consisting of Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate with several different colors of gray Bomanite Con-Color to provide an inviting exterior space and entrance to the Family Center for Juvenile Justice Facility. The new facility reclaims a dilapidated industrial area of downtown Tulsa. With a large footprint and multiple areas needing a comprehensive design, Selser Schaefer Architects were asked to take on the project. The Juvenile Bureau of the District Court promotes innovative social and rehabilitative services with dignity and respect for children and their families. With this mission in mind, Selser Schaefer Architects created a design that enhances the complex interaction and creates an environment of transparency and hope while incorporating creative applications of economical materials that fit within the existing warehouse context and bridging the gap to the adjacent Tulsa Arts District.

Bomanite of Tulsa, placed artistic decorative concrete walkways consisting of Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate with several different colors of gray Bomanite Con-Color to provide an inviting exterior space and entrance to the Family Center for Juvenile Justice Facility.Working with Selser Schaefer Architects, Bomanite of Tulsa, Inc. prepared several samples of finishes and colors that would work with the overall design and budget of the exterior hardscape. Selser Schaefer Architects ultimately decided on the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with several colors of gray Bomanite Con-Color in alternating squares of Shale Gray, Cobblestone Gray and Nickel Gray for the exterior walkways and entrance to the Family Center. To enhance the design, words of metal letters (Intervention, empowerment, diversion, prevention, family, community) were embedded into the decorative concrete to bring in an industrial modern artsy element and as a reminder of the mission of the Family Center.

Lenexa Creates Colorful Festival Plaza with Bomanite Decorative Concrete

Lenexa City has developed and opened a 300,000 plus-square-foot mixed-use campus, that includes a new City Hall, Park University, a Public Market, and a community Rec Center along with public gathering spaces. Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, had the opportunity to work with PGAV Architects and Plaid Collaborative on the design of the pedestrian plaza as part of the Civic Center.

PLAID collaborated worked with the City and PGAV to design outdoor spaces to express as they noted a  “prairie deconstructed theme, which embodies the spirit and character of the native prairie (landform, geology, and vegetation) and the history of Lenexa in a contemporary, sustainable, and sophisticated motif.” The three primary outdoor spaces created were the Festival Plaza (a large plaza for public gatherings and celebrations), the Vista (a space for activities that support the adjacent community recreation center and farmers market), and the Strata (a collection of intimate spaces for City Hall and public market patrons). The idea was for each space to have different uses, different scale and configuration but a common pallet of materials, furnishings, and details were woven through the design to complement the building architecture, provide visual continuity, and reinforce an overall sense of place.

Lenexa Civic Center Festival Plaza incorporates Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with Bomanite Con-Color Staining TechniquesThe Festival plaza incorporated 13,000 square feet of the Bomanite Sandscape Texture  Exposed Aggregate System and then was stained with pops of vibrant and subtle colors of Bomanite Con-Color that were cohesive with the overall design. The detailed stain pattern created unique challenges and used four colors: Travertine Beige, Franciscan Red, French Gray, and Gunmetal Gray. Once the color was in place the plaza was sealed with Bomaseal C-18 to help withstand the outside elements of weather and human traffic.

Lenexa Civic Center outdoor spaces were designed with Bomanite Alloy to add a sparkle to the history nodeThe center piece of the project was the 700 square feet History Node. The Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate System in Natural Gray was chosen for this portion of the plaza, installed, and then engraved with 23 significant names, dates, and events unique to the history of Lenexa. The text was of varying scale from 4” to 9” tall. Layout and execution was critical, and accuracy was of the utmost importance.

The project conception was citizen-led and has helped Lenexa visualize their dream of starting a new downtown. This is a beautiful project and exhibits the potential and beauty of quality Bomanite Decorative Concrete. To view more photos and project details check out the project video.

Garmin Expansion Calls For Pedestrian Pathway

Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors (M&H) worked with local architecture firm Gould Evans during the design development phase of the Garmin Expansion project. M&H assisted with the project specifications and samples. The design team and owner’s representatives visited the M&H architectural concrete showroom multiple times to discuss project particulars and review samples until the team was able to fine tune the project finishes.

Musselman & Hall placed 40,800 SF pedestrian plaza as part of a building expansion project at the Garmin headquarters in Olathe, KS. Nearly 25,800 SF of the plaza was done utilizing the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Finish, Multiple planter beds, cast-in-place Sandscape finished concrete benches, a continuous 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, and the detailed stain pattern created unique challenges to this project.

The entire plaza was saw cut and v grooved, or bevel cut, on a 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, joint layout was extremely critical. The jointing was continuous throughout the 700’ long plaza. Any variance in joint layout would be obvious and would not be acceptable.

M&H used Bomanite Con-Color to stain the Sandscape Texture portion of the plaza. The stain pattern incorporated three Bomanite Con-Colors; Cobblestone Gray, Nickel Gray, and Natural Gray. The stained Sandscape was then sealed with BomaSeal C-18.

This is a beautiful project and exhibits the potential and beauty of quality architectural concrete. This project won the Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project.

Bomanite Con-Color is a tinted, non-toxic, odorless, hydrolyzed lithium quartz compound that penetrates into concrete and cementitious toppings, reacting to form a hard, abrasion resistant permanent crystalline structure. Bomanite Con-Color will allow the concrete or topping to breathe, permitting moisture vapor transmission, but retards the transfer of damaging and discoloring alkali materials. When applied to concrete, Bomanite Con-Color will provide variegated and translucent coloring effects without creating a film or coating that can be worn away. Bomanite Con-Color is a viable alternative to traditional acid-based stains when a larger color palette or ease of installation is required. Bomanite Con-Color is an excellent design choice for plazas, walkways, entertainment venues, graphical signs and vertical surfaces.

Advantages of Designing with Bomanite Con-Color
• Wide range of colors
• Compatible with all cementitious Bomanite systems
• Allows necessary vapor transmission
• Eliminates dusting of concrete
• Increases concrete’s density at the surface
• Increases surface abrasion resistance
• Internal humidity stabilization
• No VOC/VOS content
• Permanent application
• Prevents free-moisture migration

Bomanite Con-Color offers the kind of versatility traditional concrete treatments can’t match and can be combined with our Imprint Systems, Toppings Systems,  Custom Polishing Systems or Exposed Aggregate Systems to create architectural concrete that is nothing short of breathtaking.
