Heritage Bomanite Renders Restaurant Radiance in Fresno

This project started with the name NX Restaurant but was renamed before opening to Saizon Restaurant located in The Row at Heritage Grove shopping center at Willows and Shepherd Avenues in NE Fresno. Billed as Napa Valley meets Mexico, it specializes in a contemporary American cuisine with Mexican influences and a distinct California point of view. However, the menu is not the only attraction to this popular restaurant. The ambience feels like you have been transported out of Fresno to a big city restaurant with an upscale feel yet maintaining incomparable hospitality that is the hallmark of Fresno.

The main contractor of the project was Fresno Sierra Contractors and the designated designer was Studio UN LTD. Because of their long history of exemplary installations and their proven ability to complete complicated design plans, Heritage Bomanite was chosen to install the decorative concrete flooring. Working closely with the designer and the owner, Bomanite Patène Artectura, part of the Bomanite Toppings Systems, was specifically selected to realize the vision of the design team.

Stained Concrete Creates Ocean Lapping Sandy Beach

The project was new construction of a new Restaurant. First, Heritage Bomanite had to grind and prime the area. Secondly, they installed Brass Terrazzo strips with incredible accuracy to make sure they looked like continuous lengths. Heritage Bomanite then installed the Bomanite Patène Artectura decorative concrete. Polishing was completed once an Artist had applied the concrete stain to create the ocean effect lapping on to a sandy beach. Finding the right level of shine and sand beach effect, using several applications of sealer, to the satisfaction of all project stakeholders, was one of the most difficult aspects of the project.

The use of custom colors by Heritage Bomanite, and an Artist working with concrete stain, has created a truly unique decorative concrete flooring that is exclusive to this restaurant. The bar area features the Artist’s concrete stain simulating the gentle motion of ocean waves washing over a sandy beach and generates an exceptional environment not often seen successfully created in concrete. The talented concrete craftmanship of the Heritage Bomanite crew allowed everything to seamlessly flow together.

Bomanite 2022 Annual Awards to Decorative Concrete Craftsmen

An air of anticipation filled the room at the Bomanite Annual Awards for 2022 Bomanite Decorative Concrete Projects, held last week in Houston, TX. The Bomanite Licensee concrete craftsmen and artisans gather annually to learn hands on new trade techniques, new Bomanite products, business strategies, and exchange ideas and tips with Bomanite Licensees from everywhere. However, the culmination of all that hard work, camaraderie, and new knowledge is the awards presentations.

With a vast knowledge and years of experience, these Bomanite Concrete Craftsmen define decorative concrete. Strong. Durable. Artistic. Creative. Bomanite Licensees work on anywhere from multimillion-dollar commercial projects to affordable residential housing, new builds, and improvements, and everything in between.

Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC received the 2022 GRAND AWARD for Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project for their exceptionally challenging project at the Omaha Riverfront Revitalization in Omaha, NE. The daunting challenge for this project was the degree of difficulty using our Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and 8,200 SF of Bomanite Revealed bonded overlay over existing walls and stairs to reconstruct three urban parks along the riverfront. Dan Kroesen of Musselman and Hall Contractors said, “This project challenged us to think and work creatively to build a project we take great pride in.”

Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC also captured the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project for MCPL Green Hills located in Kansas City, MO. They exceed the goal of this project which was to create a seamless design between the interior Cafe and the outdoor patio. That concept ultimately resulted in a cast-in-place bench that is bisected by a glass curtain wall separating the Café from the exterior patio. Using Bomanite Renaissance, with deep grind, they placed and polished 2,200 SF of flooring in the Library Café and installed an 1,800 SF patio outside to match the aesthetics of the interior flooring.

And to top off their trifecta of awards, Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC received the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Specialty Project for Rolla University Drive Realignment in Rolla, MO. Using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture they constructed a large 15,000 SF oblong roundabout decorative concrete island. They then created a 15” hexagon template to Sandblast the color hardener from the surface in a very specific pattern. The Sandblasting alone took two weeks and required a high level of detail and workmanship to Sandblast the linear hexagon pattern around an oblong roundabout without misalignment of ending and stopping points.

Heritage Bomanite took home the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project for NX Restaurant in Fresno, CA. Utilizing the Bomanite Patène Artectura System, they created very intricate interior flooring consisting of 2,865 SF of custom color and brass terrazzo strips installed with incredible accuracy to make them look like continuous lengths. Polishing was completed once an artist had applied the concrete stain to create the ocean effect of waves lapping onto a sandy beach.

Carolina Bomanite Corporation earned the 2022 Gold Award for Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project for Wilson Center for Nature at Grandfather Mountain in Linville, NC. This popular tourist destination is located about halfway up Grandfather Mountain and the project doubled the size of the original Nature Museum. The installation began in the early spring and was on a tight schedule for completion before the tourist season beginning in early summer. The crew often encountered fog, sleet, snow, freezing rain and bright sunshine all in the same day. The pattern chosen was Slate Texture and the project also highlights Custom Patterns of Deer, Racoon, Bear, Eagle, and Turkey Prints.

We’d like to thank all the Bomanite licensed contractors who submitted entries for this year’s award contest. The Bomanite Decorative Concrete Annual Project Awards has been a tradition for more than 50 years for Bomanite Licensed Contractors to submit their outstanding projects. Bomanite Licensees compete among the best of the best to be recognized for their hard work and creative talents. The winners are announced at the Bomanite Annual Conference, held in various cities from year to year. This is a taste of artwork and craftsmanship in the decorative concrete market that can only be achieved by the Bomanite Licensee network of decorative concrete craftsmen. Beyond Concrete Installs High-End Bomanite Modena Polished Concrete Floor for Iron Chef Michael Symon

Guests looking for a one-of-a-kind culinary experience on the East Coast will find that the Borgata offers a wide array of restaurants and world-renowned chefs under one roof, including Wolfgang Puck (Wolfgang Puck American Grille), Bobby Flay (Bobby Flay Steak), Michael Schulson (Izakaya Modern Japanese Pub), Geoffrey Zakarian (The Water Club hotel at Borgata), restaurateurs Greg and Marc Sherry (Old Homestead Steak House) and now Michael Symon’s Angeline.

Angeline by Michael Symon located in the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City uses Bomanite Decorative Concrete Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polished Concrete Floors installed by Beyond Concrete from Keyport, NJ for a Hi-end Iron Chef Restaurant

Angeline is Iron Chef and James Beard Award winner chef Michael Symon’s ode to classic Italian food, inspired by his heritage and personal history. Growing up with Greek and Sicilian influences, Michael Symon creates meaningful dishes that showcase his unabashed love for food, passionate hospitality and zest for life. The menu captures nostalgia with red-sauce style favorites from family recipes, including his mother Angeline’s Sunday Sauce. The design of the restaurant needed to reflect this balance of old and new world.

Parts and Labor Design, a New York-based interior design firm, whose breadth of work includes restaurants, bars, hotels and retail projects at every scale, collaborated with Philadelphia’s famed Cope-Linder Architects to pull together the design of the 8,200-square-foot Italian restaurant Angeline by Michael Symon. The 223-seat fine dining experience features a bar area, main dining room and private dining space, with the intent to showcase the soulful cooking and joyful personality synonymous with the award-winning chef. It’s described as a mix of casino glam with the comfortable familiarity of a typical neighborhood Italian restaurant.

Bomanite Licensee, Beyond Concrete, having worked previously on several other top-chef restaurants at the Borgata, was brought in by Cope-Linder Architects to make sure the restaurant interior flooring was up to the design standards and within budget. Knowing the specification called for approximately 1,800 of square feet of polished concrete floors, Beyond Concrete proceeded with showcasing several custom samples with variety of colors and depth of exposure, to the architect as well as to ABC’s The Chew co-host Chef Michael Symon. The Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polishing System was chosen for its sleek and modern design, complimenting the mixed media used throughout the dining establishment.

In preparation for the Bomanite Modena SL System the floorings base slab needed to be corrected as it was extensively out of level and in poor condition. Custom colors in black and brown pigments were mixed for the final color placement of the Bomanite Modena SL System. Once cured, the flooring was ground and polished to a medium satin finish and given two coats of Bomanite Stainguard for that final seal and durable protection. Beyond Concrete’s expertise in the field made sure that the high-end restaurant was engineered for a super star review.

The Bomanite Modena Custom Polishing System is an engineered interior cementitious topping that is blended with selected aggregates and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level. The Modena system transforms existing or worn surfaces into beautiful walkways, showrooms, restaurants and lobbies and is available in a range of colors and patterns using decorative sawcuts. Additional topically applied stains and a variety of aggregates, such as recycled glass or porcelain along with regionally sourced materials, are all options in creating a beautifully designed, environmentally friendly and functional floor. The Modena system is a low-cost alternative for renovation projects and provides the durability and strength for this exceptionally long lifespan system. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Modena by Bomanite is the optimal choice for renewed surfaces.
