Jeffco Concrete Crafted Pelham High School Flooring

Jeffco Concrete created Bomanite Micro-Top decorative concrete logo flooring at Pelham High School in Pelham, AL.Pelham, AL, a suburb of Birmingham, with a population of over 24,000, home to 11,584-acre Oak Mountain State Park, and with lots of city parks, has a small-town suburban rural mix feel.  The public schools are highly rated because education isn’t just community-focused, it’s community-inspired.  The Pelham City Board of Education chose Bradford Building Company as the main contractor for an interior renovations project, valued at just over a million dollars, of Pelham High School.   Of all the buildings on all the campuses Pelham City BOE oversees, the Pelham High School gymnasium is the oldest, built in 1973.  The gymnasium lobby is the section that has the most visitors of all the buildings on all the campuses.  Thus, making that flooring spectacular, to put the best foot forward, was a priority.

Picked as project designer, Lathan Associates Architects PC worked with Bomanite licensee Jeffco Concrete Contractors to create decorative concrete flooring that also incorporated a logo for the school.  It’s all about the P – the school’s name: Pelham HS; the school mascot: Panthers; the name of the mascot: Paws.  Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Micro-Top® was selected specifically because of the logo specification.

Bomanite Micro-Top® Tackles Tough Projects

Jeffco Concrete created Bomanite Micro-Top decorative concrete logo flooring at Pelham High School in Pelham, AL.Jeffco Concrete Contractor mechanically ground the gymnasium lobby floor to remove existing epoxy.  The floor then received 2-coats of White Micro-Top® Base and 1-coat of Finish in two separate colors.  Colors were color matched to represent the school complimentary colors.  The floor was then sealed with a urethan floor sealer.  The resulting floor has a distinctive shine, a beautiful school logo, and sweeping elements of coloration design.

Micro-Top® by Bomanite, a revolutionary cutting-edge technology that employs an ultra-thin layer of concrete to deliver a one-of-a-kind coloring system.  This advanced approach involves applying a cementitious topping with remarkable adhesion capabilities to virtually any surface, including concrete, wood, metal, plastic, or asphalt.  Unlike conventional chemical stains that are limited by standard color palettes, Micro-Top® surpasses expectations where other coloring methods fall short.  What sets Bomanite Micro-Top® apart is its versatility in covering diverse surfaces with an extensive spectrum of colors and graphics possibilities, all while offering a cost-effective alternative to labor-intensive formwork and intricate design processes.

Connecticut Bomanite Bestowed Award for School Project

Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete is used to create plank effect in renovation at Chamberlain Elementary by Connecticut Bomanite.A K-5 school that enrolls 83% economically disadvantaged students, Chamberlain Elementary in New Britain, CT, has completed a stunning $55 million renovation that has the students exited to go to school every day.  It’s not just about the curriculum, nor the quality of the teaching staff, but the overall ambiance and esthetics of a school can create a conducive atmosphere to make young minds more eager to learn.  Connecticut Bomanite Systems, as part of the renovation, was contracted by the main contractor, Mather Construction, to build two front entries, three patios, and a stepped seating area, all in decorative concrete.

Planks Lead to Learning

Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete is used to create plank effect in renovation at Chamberlain Elementary by Connecticut Bomanite. The architect at Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., had a firm idea of what he wanted as the final outcome.  He wanted a “plank” layout, and based on that, Connecticut Bomanite guided him towards Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture.  To achieve the plank layout, Connecticut Bomanite made the control sawcut layout 10’ by 10’ and the remainder of the sawcuts were decorative.  The “planks” were colored with Walnut Bomanite ConColor.  The surrounding decorative concrete used Bomanite Integral color Travertine Beige.  A consistent and very eye-pleasing look and feel was achieved throughout the entire installation.

Texas Bomanite Creates Vibrant VitraFlor Flooring for Seminary

Texas Bomanite installed beautiful, durable Bomanite VitraFlor at Dallas Theological Seminary in a high foot traffic area. What does a Leap of Faith look like?  It begins with a situation like Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) faced in April 2020.  A $14 million building had been three years in the making and was yet to be built.  With donations earmarked and targeted to cover the construction already in the bucket, the project was pending the issuance of city permits.  The permitting process had been delayed because of incredibly significant growth in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.  The COVID pandemic struck March 15, 2020, and three weeks later the final permits from the city of Dallas were issued.  Not knowing when things would get back to normal, the only logical conclusion was a Leap of Faith by DTS, and the building project started in May.

Musselman and Hall Conquers Complex Bomanite Renaissance Design

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance. When Rockford School district needed a new school constructed, they specified decorative concrete flooring that was at a reasonable cost but, just as important, durable, and beautiful.  Eureka Elementary, located in Eureka, MO, and part of the school district, was recently built by HOF Construction.  The project designer, Dickinson Hussman, selected Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors to tackle the intricacies of the challenging design.  Challenging projects done within the time allotted, even if shorter than optimum, are a forte for Musselman & Hall and they were a perfect match for this project.

Complex Design Done by Skilled Bomanite Craftsmen

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.Musselman & Hall used Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Renaissance to complete the 22,500 square foot project.  The project required four colors of Bomanite Renaissance poured in contact with each other in a geometric pattern of bands, then ground and polished as one slab.  They placed 2-inch-thick topping slabs in four different integral colors.  The Bomanite colors used were French Gray, Natural Gray, Sand, and Coquina.  The latter required the use of white cement, which was a challenge of its own, because white cement sets very quickly.

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance. The layout of the four colors made it crucial that both the formwork and the placement of topping slabs be installed with absolute precision to achieve sharp construction seams and maintain even aggregate exposure throughout.  The schedule required their crews to begin grinding and polishing in the first areas they placed before they were even completed with the slab installations.  The crews then ground and polished, as one slab, to a satin sheen and full aggregate exposure.

Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC placed 25,000 square-feet of 2”-thick Bomanite Renaissance Deep Grind system as an unbonded topping slab integrating local aggregates and references. Once the slab was cured, it was ground down to expose the coarse aggregates and then polished to a semi-gloss concrete finish.

The Bomanite Renaissance Deep Grind polished concrete system represents a custom mix of individually sourced aggregates, sands, and added integral colors that can be installed as a slab on grade or unbonded overlay. Once the concrete sets, it is milled, ground, and finally polished to produce a beautiful, solid surface that looks and wears very similar to terrazzo.

The Bomanite Renaissance Polished Concrete system provided design flexibility, first-cost savings and lower cost maintenance for the new construction of the Olathe West High School interior floors installed by Musselman & Hall Contractors

While every type of flooring requires regular maintenance, one of the advantages of the Bomanite Renaissance Deep Grind process is the long-term cost positives. Because the floor is treated with chemical hardeners that reduce porosity, while still allowing it to breath, fully-exposed hard aggregates are the predominate wear surface rather than an applied sealer or coating. Correctly selecting aggregates by size, type, and color allows the floor to wear naturally while supporting superior stain resistance to traditional concrete because no film-forming agents are required to maintain a Bomanite Renaissance floor.

The Bomanite Renaissance system checks a lot of boxes – tremendous design flexibility, first-cost savings, lower cost maintenance, making Bomanite Decorative Concrete the right investment for long lasting beauty and benefit for school construction projects and its communities.

AWARDS: Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC earned the Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Silver Award 2019 for the high-end, readily customized decorative concrete installation at Olathe West High School.

Musselman & Hall Provide Grand Winning Bomanite Polished Concrete for Grain Valley High School

With school out for the summer that leaves room for designers and contractors to have more readily available access for specified improvements and upgrades. Growing School Districts looking to restyle, update or renovate can trust the Bomanite Modena SL system for low maintenance and cost saving benefits. The Grain Valley High School originally built in the late 1990s finished its phase 4 expansion to accommodate its rapidly growing student body. Expansion brought much needed instructional and collaboration space, a game changer for students. With a large amount of community support, the School took into consideration the need to provide a low maintenance flooring with an element of design to embody the schools colors and team spirit.

They searched through a number of samples, library binders, created idea boards and pulled together a combination of polished concrete and different aggregates that would give the students academia pride in their newly expanded school.

The new entrance to the “Eagle Way” promenade is flanked by a huge monolithic concrete wall dressed out in the school colors of royal blue and white. The entrance’s 2,890 sq. ft. hallway contains two shades of vibrant blue glass aggregate and eye-catching pieces of sparkling mirror glass polished to a brilliant luster. After the concrete base slab was poured, it was topped with a two-inch thick Bomanite Modena SL topping slab, aggregates added and after a brief curing period the floor was then polished to the perfect grit and shine.

Musselman & Hall crews also polished three sets of concrete steps with a three-line nose detail engraved into the concrete. The newly created grooves were filled with “Grain Valley Blue” epoxy to bring some school spirit and color into the Bomanite cream polished finish designed surface areas.

The Modena system transforms existing or worn surfaces into beautiful walkways, school hallways, showrooms, restaurants and lobbies and is available in a range of colors and patterns using decorative sawcuts. Additional topically applied stains and a variety of aggregates, such as recycled glass or porcelain along with regionally sourced materials, are all options in creating a beautifully designed, environmentally friendly and functional floor. The Modena system is a low-cost alternative for renovation projects and provides the durability and strength for this exceptionally long lifespan system. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Modena by Bomanite Polished Concrete was the optimal choice for Grain Valley’s expansion and renovations.
