Stunning Structural Storytelling

Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete at Washington Guest House installed by Connecticut Bomanite Systems. From the moment visitors step into the Washington Guest House in Washington Depot, Connecticut, they are greeted with an unforgettable example of how decorative concrete can elevate a residential space into an artistic masterpiece.  The hook lies in the unexpected—few expect concrete to exude both elegance and warmth, yet here it does with effortless charm.  The design team collaborated closely with Connecticut Bomanite Systems to create a flooring installation that not only addressed complex structural needs but also delivered stunning visual impact.  The project’s focal point was the terrazzo flooring, achieved through the use of Bomanite Modena TGE, a resin-based terrazzo decorative concrete designed for performance and beauty.  Every surface was meticulously planned to highlight the polished, seamless transitions that make the space feel both expansive and inviting.  Beyond mere function, the concrete became an integral element of the architectural story, blending practicality with modern luxury.  This opening impression underscores how decorative concrete can redefine expectations for residential flooring design.

Detailed Design Dimensions

Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete at Washington Guest House installed by Connecticut Bomanite Systems. The Washington Guest House project encompassed 1,300 square feet of flooring across the main level, with an additional 200 square feet surrounding the stairway on the lower level.  Every inch of this flooring space was carefully considered to ensure that the results would deliver both technical performance and aesthetic appeal.  From bathrooms to showers and the central living area, Bomanite Modena TGE was selected to unify the entire first floor with seamless polish and long-lasting durability.  Vertical challenges were tackled with skill, including stair openings, shower bases, and a 28” by 30” vertical face, all of which were precast, resin-based, cemented in place, and then polished to perfection.  This approach created seamless transitions between horizontal and vertical surfaces, an achievement rarely seen in conventional flooring systems.  The result was not only highly functional but also visually striking, giving the home a truly custom feel.  Such precision in execution demonstrates the expertise of Connecticut Bomanite Systems in managing decorative concrete complexities.

Complex Construction Challenges

Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete at Washington Guest House installed by Connecticut Bomanite Systems.Like any high-profile decorative concrete project, the Washington Guest House presented numerous technical challenges that required advanced problem-solving and concrete craftsmanship.  One of the greatest difficulties came from placing concrete over wood framing, a task fraught with risks for cracking and instability.  Connecticut Bomanite Systems addressed this by incorporating metal mesh reinforcement that essentially made the flooring almost impossible to crack unless the entire house experienced structural movement.  Adding to the complexity was the sweltering summer heat during construction, which required careful timing and adjustments to curing methods.  Despite these obstacles, the installation achieved a flawless finish with no visible joints or cracks across the entire wood-framed floor.  The seamless integration of terrazzo surfaces across multiple levels elevated both the technical and aesthetic standards of the home.  This careful orchestration of strategy, material, and execution highlights why Bomanite systems are the preferred choice for demanding architectural projects.

Flawless Flooring Features

Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete at Washington Guest House installed by Connecticut Bomanite Systems. The finished floors at the Washington Guest House stand as a testament to the versatility and brilliance of Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete.  Fine sand exposure was carefully achieved to create a consistent texture, lending a sleek yet subtly tactile quality to the flooring surface.  Unlike other flooring materials that often display inconsistencies, the Bomanite Modena TGE system ensured uniformity throughout every room, from living spaces to bathrooms.  The resin-based terrazzo decorative cement produced a seamless transition that contributed to the clean, modern feel of the home’s design.  The polished finish reflected natural light beautifully, enhancing the open and inviting atmosphere of the guest house.  The project’s success demonstrated that concrete could serve not only as a practical surface but as a defining design element.  This innovative use of decorative concrete reinforced the property’s unique character, merging architectural precision with artistic expression.

Material Mastery with Bomanite Modena TGE

Bomanite Modena TGE decorative concrete at Washington Guest House installed by Connecticut Bomanite Systems. The advantages of Bomanite Modena TGE resin-based terrazzo decorative concrete extend well beyond its aesthetic appeal, providing homeowners with unparalleled durability and design freedom.  Known for its high compressive strength, Bomanite Modena TGE withstands heavy use without the wear patterns common to traditional flooring materials.  Its seamless finish reduces maintenance demands while also eliminating joints where dirt and moisture can accumulate.  The resin-based matrix of hard, non-reactive materials allows for endless customization with aggregates, colors, and finishes, making it possible to tailor floors to any architectural vision.  At the Washington Guest House, this versatility was evident in the terrazzo polish and fine aggregate exposure that produced an elegant and timeless effect.  The flooring not only elevates design but also ensures a long lifecycle with minimal upkeep, making it a cost-effective solution for high-traffic residential spaces.  For clients seeking both luxury and longevity, Bomanite Modena TGE represents a flooring option that delivers on every promise.

Musselman & Hall Magnificent Modern Flooring with Bomanite Renaissance

Planning Precision Placement for Polished Perfection

Decorative concrete featuring Bomanite Renaissance by Musselman & Hall at Rushton Elementary.Decorative concrete projects often begin with ambitious visions, but at Rushton Elementary School in Mission, KS, Musselman & Hall Contractors LLC transformed vision into tangible reality through careful planning and technical mastery.  As part of a new facility construction for the school district, the project scope required installing 8,400 square feet of highly polished decorative concrete flooring using the Bomanite Renaissance Deep Grind process.  This advanced method, part of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems, ensured both durability and aesthetic appeal for high-traffic areas within the school.  Key spaces such as the main entry, cafeteria, and upper hallway were enhanced by this flooring solution, creating a consistent and refined look throughout the institution.  To support the system, a 2-inch unbonded topping slab was placed to accommodate the grinding and polishing procedures while also providing long-term performance.  The inclusion of this structural foundation was critical to achieving the final polished result, ensuring stability for the flooring system.  By prioritizing preparation and precision, Musselman & Hall laid the groundwork for a project that would exceed both functional and visual expectations.

Aggregate Aesthetics: Accents that Amplify Architectural Appeal

Decorative concrete featuring Bomanite Renaissance by Musselman & Hall at Rushton Elementary. The striking beauty of the Rushton Elementary flooring system lies in its unique aggregate blend, carefully curated to enhance the polished surface.  Musselman & Hall incorporated a combination of surface-seeded materials including red chunky glass, cameo cream, and rebel gray, producing a dynamic and visually captivating appearance.  Each aggregate was strategically chosen for its balance of vibrant color, textural contrast, and long-term durability in a high-use environment.  The decision to embed glass and aggregate into the topping slab was not merely cosmetic, but also functional, as these materials contribute to wear resistance and reduced maintenance needs.  Once the surface was ground and polished, the exposed aggregates shimmered under natural and artificial lighting, highlighting the decorative concrete artistry behind the installation.  This distinctive finish not only elevates the overall design but also establishes the school as a modern, welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.  By marrying durability with decorative design, the aggregates became the heart of this polished concrete masterpiece.

Staircase Synergy: Seamless Surfaces for Student Spaces

Decorative concrete featuring Bomanite Renaissance by Musselman & Hall at Rushton Elementary.

Beyond the expansive flooring areas, Musselman & Hall extended their expertise to the fabrication and installation of custom precast concrete stair treads.  Matching stair treads to the polished flooring required exceptional attention to detail, ensuring consistency in aggregate exposure, color tone, and polish level.  Achieving seamless integration between vertical and horizontal surfaces was a logistical challenge, as even slight variations could disrupt the visual flow of the design.  Through disciplined craftsmanship, the team created stair treads that not only aligned perfectly with the flooring but also enhanced safety and durability for daily student use.  This thoughtful integration elevated the overall architectural cohesion of the school’s interior spaces.  Each step became an extension of the polished flooring, blending function with flawless form.  The stair installations underscore Musselman & Hall’s commitment to providing comprehensive solutions that unite beauty, practicality, and performance.

Collaborative Coordination: Construction Challenges Conquered with Craftsmanship

Delivering a project of this scale and complexity required close collaboration with multiple stakeholders, including the general contractor, JE Dunn, and the architect, Incite Design Studio.  With Rushton Elementary marking the second partnership between Musselman & Hall and the school district, the contractors approached the project with an in-depth understanding of client expectations and institutional standards.  This familiarity fostered streamlined communication, increased efficiency, and enhanced execution throughout the project lifecycle.  Technical challenges, such as achieving aggregate alignment between stairs and floors or ensuring color consistency across expansive surfaces, were overcome through advanced methods and meticulous testing.  Each obstacle became an opportunity to refine processes, enhance knowledge, and deliver improved results.  By balancing innovation with proven expertise, Musselman & Hall provided the district with a durable and beautiful flooring solution that reflects both collaboration and craftsmanship.  The final outcome is a model for institutional flooring that blends architectural creativity with construction excellence.

Renaissance Rewards: Reliability and Radiance in Every Room

Bomanite Renaissance decorative concrete provides unmatched benefits that make it a premier choice for institutional and commercial flooring projects.  By employing the deep grind process, the system exposes aggregates to create a natural terrazzo-like finish that balances elegance with endurance.  This process results in a dense, smooth surface that resists stains, abrasions, and heavy wear—qualities essential for high-traffic environments like schools.  In addition to durability, Bomanite Renaissance offers incredible design flexibility, enabling architects and contractors to achieve custom looks that complement surrounding materials.  Its low maintenance requirements and long-term performance reduce lifecycle costs, making it a sustainable and cost-effective option.  At Rushton Elementary, the Renaissance system brought both beauty and practicality to spaces frequented daily by hundreds of students and staff.  The flooring’s performance will continue to serve the school community for decades, proving that decorative concrete can deliver more than just aesthetics.

The coloration and design chosen was Bomanite Modena SL with titanium dioxide and surface seeded Honey Lemon size 01 glass with brass inlay terrazzo strips.  Through trial and error, Musselman & Hall Contractors found with the low loading and size of glass they had to approach their self-leveler installation differently than in previous installations.  Their crew of concrete craftsmen hand broadcast onto the surface after the first spike roll.  A second light handed spike roll was used to seat the glass.  Previous failed attempts showed the aggregate being organized into faint lines by the spike roller when they tried other methods.

In Lee’s Summit, MO, Lee’s Summit High School underwent an $80 million dollar renovation.  The 60,000 SF expansion featured a new centralized media center, outdoor learning spaces, and an extensive transformation of the façade as well as the existing classrooms and public spaces.  The total duration of project construction took approximately two years to complete.  JE Dunn was chosen as the main contractor and Multistudio was chosen as the Project Designer.  Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC was selected to execute the architectural vision of decorative concrete which consisted of an expansive installation of Bomanite Belcolore system throughout the public spaces and thoroughfares.  The project also utilized precast stair elements with monolithic tread and riser matching the flooring.  The stakeholders chose Bomanite Charcoal Gray color hardened polished floors and precast treads.  Installing the Belcolore finish on a large scale as well as in the precast treads were both charting in new territory not just for Musselman & Hall, but seemingly anywhere.

The floors were poured as a 3″ thick topping slab.  Musselman & Hall placed a standard floor mix and roughly floated.  Then once the slab had set enough to allow their concrete craftsmen to get on it without sinking, they spread a pound and a half of color hardener per square foot.  When the hardener had soaked through, from the slab moisture, they worked it to a cream with 4-foot pan walk behind power trowels.  Eventually they switched to combo blades to get the final finish desired.  After the slabs were cured out and phasing allowed, they gave the floors a fairly standard paste polish with only minor accommodations made for the color hardened surface.  The project was in numerous phases and stretched from Nov 2021 to July 2023.  Some of the stair treads were cast and stored for over a year before installed.

Bomanite Belcolore Bold Breakthrough in Concrete Coloring

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors. The Bomanite Belcolore system, part of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems, is revolutionizing the way decorative concrete surfaces are finished and maintained in both new constructions and major renovations. This innovative system utilizes Bomanite Color Hardener, which is applied directly onto the surface of freshly placed concrete.  The Color Hardener is evenly distributed over the surface and then expertly troweled, akin to the traditional finishing of concrete.  This method not only ensures a uniform color distribution but also enhances the surface’s durability.  Once the concrete has cured, it undergoes a paste polishing process to achieve the desired gloss level, followed by treatment according to the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System. This approach eliminates the need for topically applied dyes or stains, offering a more robust and long-lasting finish.  The final product is a high-gloss, abrasion-resistant surface that is distinguished for its beauty and durability.

One of the standout features of the Bomanite Belcolore system is its superior abrasion resistance, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas where longevity is key.  The range of color options available with the Bomanite Color Hardener is significantly broader than those offered by integrally colored concrete, allowing for customization and versatility in design.  This vast variety ensures that each project can achieve a unique aesthetic without sacrificing the structural integrity of the concrete.  Furthermore, the Bomanite Belcolore system is specifically designed for environments undergoing significant transformations, such as new buildings or extensive refurbishments, where a reliable and effective flooring solution is critical.  By integrating the color during the concrete’s initial placement and finishing stages, the system also streamlines the construction process, reducing additional steps and materials typically involved in achieving such high-quality results.

The application of the Bomanite Belcolore system offers numerous advantages for architects and builders looking to incorporate durable, architecturally pleasing decorative concrete surfaces in their projects.  Not only does the system provide a wide array of vibrant, intense color choices, but it also contributes to a more sustainable construction practice by eliminating the need for frequent repairs or replacements.  This method aligns with modern construction standards that prioritize both aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability.  The ease of maintenance and the enduring quality of the finishes ensure that the installations remain attractive and functional for years to come.  As more construction and renovation projects seek innovative solutions that combine form and function, the Bomanite Belcolore system stands out as a leading choice for achieving superior, polished decorative concrete surfaces.

Texas Bomanite Transforms Texas Bankers Association Flooring

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Revealed decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Founded in 1885, the Texas Bankers Association is the first state banking association in the United States.  It is also the largest state-based banking trade organization in the country.  The Association focuses on member-centric policies, professional development, issue advocacy, and premier services.  Representing a diverse group of Texas banks including large and small, state and national, thrift, and community institutions, it is committed to community development. Its members play a crucial role in bolstering local economies and fortifying Texas communities, embodying their motto of “Strong Banks for Stronger Communities.”  To build a new ground-up Headquarters office building in Austin, TX, Texas Bankers Association contracted Beck Group as the main contractor, and utilized Beck Architecture as the project designer.  Texas Bomanite was chosen to realize the architect’s vision in decorative concrete throughout the lobby and the entrance to the building.

From Piece of Tile To Total Project

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.This project was solely designed from a piece of tile that the architect wanted to use in the elevators and bathroom floor and wanted the decorative concrete flooring to match.  Over several months, many design meetings, and samples, Texas Bomanite created a white Bomanite Modena TG floor with #3-#5 Bomanite Blanco Mexicano aggregates.  Bomanite Modena is one of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems.  Texas Bomanite included 1/8″ zinc divider strips to break up the floor and tie into the silver finishes throughout the lobby.  The architect also wanted a seamless transition from the outside to the inside and Texas Bomanite added on a white Bomanite Revealed™ front entry with the same aggregates.  Bomanite Revealed™ is one of the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems.  This lobby was the genesis of many projects that showcase a continuous flooring from the inside of the building to the outside of the building created by concrete craftsmen at Texas Bomanite.

Project Presented Complex Challenges

Coordination was required between the structural engineer to place the sub slab control joints with the design intent in mind of the Bomanite Modena TG.  The project had hallways emanating from the central lobby and coordinating the pours so that the crew wouldn’t be trapped off of one end of the lobby also took some coordination. The service elevator and pedestrian elevators were all surrounded by Bomanite Modena TG so coordinating the pour schedule with the needs of continued construction throughout the building posed some painstaking planning.

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Texas Bomanite used all three of its divisions to complete this project.  The polish division performed all interior prep work, installation of zinc strips, and polishing of the Bomanite Modena TG.  The concrete division performed the installation of the Bomanite Modena TG and Bomanite Revealed™ decorative concrete, paying close attention that the large aggregates were tightly floated against all of the zinc strips, and against the exposed, curved concrete walls. The front entrance of the building is on a hill so creating and leveling the front steps and ADA ramp posed to be quite difficult.  The clean and seal division performed the exterior prep work and exposing and sealing of the Bomanite Revealed™.  Challenges also came with the existence of white concrete on a construction site.  Many methods of protection and coordination and collaboration with other trades were required to keep the finish white throughout the remainder of construction.  The zinc strips also posed challenges.  The Bomanite Modena TG had to be polished slowly and with white or neutral tooling to avoid staining the floor.  Texas Bomanite had to use various methods to remove the zinc shavings from the floor as they moved through the process.

Two Bomanite Systems Sustain Design Concept

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Using two Bomanite Systems to achieve the desired design concepts was necessary in this project.  Bomanite Modena TG is an engineered cementitious topping designed for bonding to cured concrete or prepared wood substrates.  Once set, this topping is ground to reveal internal aggregates and then polished to the desired gloss level, followed by a protective Bomanite stain-resistant seal or coating.  Key benefits include a wide range of colors, diverse aggregate options, superior durability, and a consistent surface appearance.  This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas in public buildings like airports, hospitals, government offices, and schools.  Bomanite Revealed™ is an architectural concrete that showcases decorative aggregates at varying exposure depths, bound within a unique binder on primed concrete.  This system employs preblended binders, light-fast pigments, specialized admixtures, and advanced application techniques to highlight the seeded aggregate.  Unlike typical surface-seeded installations, Bomanite Revealed™ achieves 100% exposure of the aggregate without any native sands marring the appearance.

Texas Bomanite Transforms Two Elementary Schools

Buildings have a life span, but more importantly they often have an earlier shelf life, as was the case for two elementary schools in Central Texas.  The Del Valle ISD (Independent School District) is a public educational district located in the Del Valle area, which is an unincorporated part of Travis County, TX.  This district provides educational services to a significant portion of southeast Travis County.  The district encompasses several incorporated communities, including Creedmoor, Webberville, the majority of Mustang Ridge, and some sections of Austin.  In conjunction with the 2019 voter approved Bond proposition, and an architecture schematic subsequently created by Pfluger Architects, Del Valle ISD contracted American Constructors as the General Contractor to demolish and replace two of the district’s oldest campuses, Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary and Smith Elementary.  American Constructors selected Texas Bomanite to install the decorative concrete in both schools.

Texas Bomanite was asked by American Constructors to provide over 70,000 SF of Diamond Polished, Dyed, and stamped concrete throughout the elementary school for each of the schools.  The project scope and timeline took three months to complete and included an initial mockup for each school prior to installation, 1500 grit polished concrete with Salt and Pepper aggregate exposure, a dyed concrete geometric design throughout the floors, and a school logo unique to each school.  The colors used for the geometric floor design were Sweet Potato, Black Orchid, Pineapple, Blueberry, Pine Green, and Turquoise.  The decorative concrete chosen for both of the installations were Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite VitraFlor and Bomanite Patène Teres, Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Patène Artectura, and Bomanite Imprint Systems.

Meanwhile, the Bomanite Patène Teres system is designed to color fully cured concrete during the polishing process, using Bomanite Chemical Stains and Bomanite Concrete Dyes. Starting with a base of uncolored gray concrete, which may include Bomanite Integral Color or Bomanite Color Hardener applied during placement, the floor undergoes grinding, staining, or dyeing, and then follows the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System process. The key advantage of Bomanite Patène Teres lies in its ability to introduce a wide spectrum of topical colors to concrete. When combined with skilled saw cutting techniques for patterns or designs, this process can elevate concrete to a form of art, offering a range from simple monochromatic tones to bright, vibrant hues and a variety of finishes from urban sophistication to varied, rustic styles.  Like Bomanite VitraFlor, Bomanite Patène Teres is primarily aimed at new construction or major renovation projects.
