Kansas University School of Business Capitol Federal Hall
The Kansas University School of Business Capitol Federal Hall serves as a destination point for students who are determined to move business forward. From state-of-the-art technology to research labs, this will be a hub for collaboration and innovation.
Bomanite Licensee, Musselman and Hall Contractors worked closely with the local architecture firm, Gastinger Walker, during the design development phase of the project allowing the project specifications and samples to be fine-tuned, making sure this 166,500 square foot four story facility was at the top of its class. The work completed earned Musselman and Hall the Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Project at the 2017 Bomanite Conference. The Kansas University School of Business Capitol Federal Hall has 20 classrooms, a 350 set auditorium and nearly two dozen collaborative spaces.
The atrium lobby, common area, and gathering space was completed with the Bomanite Custom Polishing Renaissance system. The large common area in the atrium lobby was designed to be a living room-like “entrepreneurship incubator” with 15,800 square feet of 4” thick integrally colored topping slab. The slab was integrally colored with Bomanite’s Coal Gray. The slab was ground to a “salt & pepper” aggregate exposure and polished to a semi-gloss finish. The placement of the topping slab included multiple sets of cast-in-place steps as well as an ADA accessible ramp.
The centerpiece of the project, and building as a whole, is the 24’ diameter Jayhawk symbol at the west entry of the atrium lobby. The Jayhawk involved the installation of an intricate zinc inlay with a polishable overlay. Deerfield Academy – Hess Center for the Arts (Modena SL)
Deerfield Academy Hess Center for the Arts, located in Massachusetts, worked with Bomanite Licensee, Premier Concrete Construction to choose Bomanite Modena for their renovated space. Installed for high durability, for everyday foot traffic, musical equipment and powerful art exhibits, this engineered interior cementitious topping is blended with selected aggregates, ground and polished to the desired gloss level.
Available in a range of colors and patterns using decorative sawcuts, topically applied stains, variety of aggregates are all options in creating a beautifully designed and functional floor. The Modena Custom Polished Concrete Flooring System is a low-cost alternative for renovation projects and provides the durability and strength for this exceptionally long lifespan system. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Modena by Bomanite is the optimal choice for renewed surfaces.
Navajo Elementary
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION
This project is an example of a parking lot application requiring a pervious concrete surface that could withstand the New Mexico climate while dealing with exceptional water volume and providing the necessary structural capacity.
The Navajo Elementary School is located on a flood plain just west of the Rio Grande river not far from downtown Albuquerque. The area is subject to periodic flooding due to a combination of its topography, localized heavy rain and poor draining soils. The existing parking lot flooded fairly regularly with up to 6 inches of standing water present for extended periods of time. This posed safety and access issues for parents and teachers utilizing the parking lot daily. The Bomanite Grasscrete System was selected as the product to meet their needs due to the historically poor performance of traditional no fines or pervious concrete in the region.
The utilization of storm water retention chambers under approximately 20,000 square feet of the lot combined with the clear stone bed achieved the necessary capacity to handle the heavy rains. With a conventional stone filled void Grasscrete application capable of storing 3 inches of rain, this revised system was capable of several times this volume. This not only solved the parking lot flooding problem but gained additional capacity to pump water from areas surrounding the school when required.
The school itself, as well as the parking lot, were renovated at the same time while open so construction vehicles such as large delivery trucks, forklifts and waste disposal trucks had to gain access to the parking lot shortly after placement. This was achieved through the use of a concrete mix that had an average compressive strength of 4200 psi at 7 days and an ultimate strength in excess of 6000 psi while still utilizing the desired 26% fly ash replacement of portland cement. This mix in conjunction with the 8” on center #3 bar utilized in the formers allowed the slab to be opened to light vehicles within 36 hours and all vehicles within 72 hours of concrete placement.
While the main surface area is easy to navigate both by vehicle and foot, handicap access was provided using traditional broom finished concrete. This finish ran through the parking area where required with the surface pitched to drain into the Grasscrete System. This type of composite system is both cost effective and practical providing smooth uninterrupted access where necessary but still achieving the required amount of pervious surface.
St. Mikes School
Bomanite Grasscrete Systems provide a variety of landscape solutions while maintaining a sustainable, “Green” product design. As a cast-in-place, monolithic, pervious concrete pavement that is continuously reinforced to provide superior structural integrity, Grasscrete offers the ability to provide year-round access to a variety of applications without compromising surrounding aesthetics or environment.
Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Green Pervious Systems was contacted to provide a solution to an existing entry courtyard that was landscaped with gravel and plants. Due to heavy foot traffic across the landscaped areas it was impossible for the school to maintain the upkeep of the landscaping. Bomanite Grasscrete Systems was selected to replace the gravel courtyard for several reasons, first, it would allow for foot traffic across the courtyard without destroying the planted grass. Second, the courtyard receives storm water runoff from the surrounding buildings and Grasscrete allows the water to be absorbed rapidly in the confined courtyards and provides a porous surface to stockpile snow that is removed from the walks in the winter months.
The Grasscrete System consisted of a lose ¾” gravel aproximately 6” thick for the drain bed which was covered with a filter fabric / weed barrier. The filter fabric then was covered with a 2” sand leveling course for the Molded Pulp Formers. The formers are placed to grade and concrete is placed on the formers and screeded level with the tops. The concrete was given a broom finish and after the concrete had set the tops of the formers are removed and clean topsoil was used to fill the forms. The soil was left approximately ½” low to prevent compaction of the planting material from foot traffic. The forms were then filled with grass seed to complete the system.

VanDellen Christian School
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION
Description:
Approx 2,000 feet of fully grassed Bomanite Grasscrete was installed at the VanDellen Christian School. The Grasscrete system was covered with Bluegrass sod that provides an aesthetic appeal to a fire lane access that leads from a school parking lot along the edge of a sports field. There is a four foot span of regular concrete with a 16 foot installation of Grasscrete which creates a 20 foot wide emergency access road. The Grasscrete is irrigated along with the sports field.
This road allows the fire department to gain access to the buildings off a main street in the event of a fire. Using Grasscrete allowed the school to maximize the size of the sports field, creating a safer playing surface than concrete or asphalt. Additionally the use of the Grasscrete lessened the stormwater runoff that would otherwise have to be accounted for.

Colorado College
Colorado College located in Colorado Springs wanted to maintain the grassed areas adjacent to large trees while providing access to a fire hydrant set back from the roadway. Grasscrete was chosen and installed by certified Bomanite Contractor, Premier Concrete Services. Grasscrete Molded Pulp Formers were utilized for this project providing sustainability with their 100% recycled content and ability to degrade over time into the sub-soils. The combination of concrete, steel and aggregate interlock ensures that Grasscrete can bear isolated loads such as downriggers placed in an emergency situation with no support blocks, The robustness of the system minimizes the potential for failure during critical use.
Upper Iowa University Student Center
The design team for Upper Iowa University wanted a flooring option which achieved the same look as coated acid stained floor without the maintenance the coating requires. When approached by the construction management firm with the clients wants and needs, Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Concrete Arts offered polished and dyed concrete floors as the option with all the answers.
Together it was decided that the Patene Teres level two polished concrete system from Bomanite would be used. A custom blend of Bomanite Warm Honey and Bomanite Malt Brown Concrete Dyes were used to create a stained patina look, with Turquoise accents. Concrete Arts provided continuity to the stair treads and landings with architectural precast polished concrete for that entity. The University was enthralled with the ability to create a monolithic stair tread and riser system which would match the look of the floor and grant the same performance and durability as the low maintenance polished concrete offers.
To cast the stairs and landings, Concrete Arts chose Lifetime Floors’ Quicktops mix due to its polymer-modified and fiber-reinforced traits. The tread and riser system was cast using a corresponding integral colorant to compliment the flooring, and were polished and honed for durability. A traction strip was sandblasted in after the polishing process to provide slip-resistance.
Upper Iowa University was so thrilled with the look of the floor it decided to utilize it in the new Student Book Store and Liberal Arts Center it was building. The book store incorporated a similar polished floor look and had Concrete Arts provide concrete counter tops for the bar in the Student Center. And the Liberal Arts building utilized precast stair treads with an open-riser look as well to create even more continuity from space to space.
University of Missouri – Brady Commons
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION
Description:
The nickname for the University of Missouri in Columbia is “Mizzou”. When drawing up the plans to renovate and expand the Brady Student Commons into a new Student Center, the school naturally wanted to incorporate the beloved “Mizzou” name into the design. They decided to accomplish this using Micro-Top on a 10’ – 4” wide circular band spanning 340’ of the main walk area. The lettering template was created based on the font information provided by the University. Layout of the color separations and placement of the logos was difficult because interior walls were constructed before the layout was complete. After grinding the floor and applying the base coat, finish coats were applied in three colors, followed by a wax coat. Edges had to be cut to keep the layout after grinding, and for outside carpet lines.
Due to a tight schedule, multiple crafts were working in the same area. Foot bridges were built across the Micro-Top in a number of places to provide access from one side to the other. In order to protect the work in progress, the Micro-Top had to be covered with Masonite every day after work, and then covered in craft paper and Masonite after completion, until all construction was complete. The result of all this hard work and attention to detail is a meeting place sure to instill “Mizzou” pride in all its visitors
Natural Resource Research Campus Building E (NRRC)

Description:
Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes of Denver, CO, incorporated the Patène Artectura system into their award winning Natural Resource Research Campus Building E (NRRC) project completed in February 2005 in Fort Collins, CO. Together with project designer, Mimi Hillen, Colorado Hardscapes created the beautiful mountain waterfall themed design to a 1992 sq. ft. entryway space of this US Forest Service office building. Using their signature quality craftsmanship and expertise, Colorado Hardscapes fulfilled the designer’s vision by utilizing innovative products and techniques while crafting the beautiful nature scene.
Along with installing a natural and simulated rock water feature, Colorado Hardscapes fashioned the shallow meandering stream look by using exposed aggregate to create depth and contrasting stream beds to the Aqua Blue Bomanite Con-Color curvatures of the flowing waterscape design. To create the prairie themed area of the project, Bomanite Olive, Auburn, Pine and Rust Red Chemical Stains were beautifully blended together giving the hardscape a warm and lustrous finish, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the entryway. With a unique touch to bring the project theme full circle, Colorado Hardscapes sandblasted animal tracks of 21 different animals throughout the area to capture the essence and complement the nature scheme of the inspired foyer.
