Community Park – Jefferson City

Community Park, located in Jefferson City, MO is a 3.5-acre neighborhood park that children and adults alike are enjoying. Jefferson City Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department opened the much-needed renovated park before officially complete so that residents could start exploring the park features for family outings and outdoor getaways. Landworks Studio, LLC provided master planning and construction documentation services as part of a complete renovation to meet the needs of the nearby residents. The master plan showcases the history of the surrounding Historic Foot District and offers design elements to bring a diverse population together to participate in outdoor activities and gatherings.

Community Park is unrecognizable from its former life as an empty grass plot, it has now been turned into a modern play area that includes a large climbing feature made of a complex web of ropes with a tall metal tube slide that takes center stage. Along one side runs a pair of zip lines, a unique style of teeter-totter, large net swings, interactive play sculptures, obstacle course-type with climbing bars and platforms, toddler’s play mounds and climbing logs are additional features found within the park. The full park is covered in turf, including a small hill with two built-in slides. The park has two pavilions on either side of the restroom buildings that provide shade for individuals or groups. Continuing with the decorative and fun design some of the tabletops under the shelter were given a checkerboard pattern treatment.

Closest to the parking lot is the cooling colorful splash pad with multiple jets of water shooting out of the ground. The water is on a minute-long timer to save water when it’s not being used, but nearby are three buttons on pedestals to turn them right back on when they’re in use. In order to complete the splash pad design and ready it for use, Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC were called in to put the finishing touches in place. Landworks Studio had specified a Bomanite exposed aggregate finish with several Bomanite concrete stains, the local winning bid contractor, Sircal Contracting, was unable to fulfill the Bomanite specification portion therefore they formed and installed the gray bands while Musselman & Hall finished up the 995 square foot pour with Bomanite Sandscape® Texture colored with seven different Bomanite Con-Color penetrating stains in Beech, Coal Gray, Mist Green, Paprika, Steel Blue, Travertine Beige and Sienna. Stencils were applied to create the historical representation of the foot district.

When applied to concrete, Bomanite Con-Color will provide variegated and translucent coloring effects without creating a film or coating that can be worn away. Bomanite Con-Color is a viable alternative to traditional acid-based stains when a larger color palette or ease of installation is required. Preventing free-moisture migration and increased surface abrasion resistance along with no VOC/VOS content were just a few of the benefits that led Landworks Studio to specify the Bomanite product. Used in conjunction with the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System, specifically designed for outdoor applications provided a palette of slip-resistant consistent texture and durable hardscape.

Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC earned the 2020 Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project Silver Award for this $2.5 Million Park Rehabilitation using the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with Bomanite Con-Color creating a colorful decorative concrete splashpad for everyone to enjoy now and into the future at the Community Park.

Great Wolf Lodge – Minnesota

The Great Wolf Lodge opened one of their latest resorts in Bloomington, MN. The Gensler Architect team was hired for the renovation project. With one of a kind entertainment options, Bomanite Licensee, Bulach Custom Rock (known for their work on themed projects) was able to provide 5,000 square feet of the specified flooring that matched the outdoor adventure theme. With the existing floor in place, Bulach Custom Rock came through with the Bomanite Thin-Set Stampable Overlay Toppings System in three different patterns that were used intersecting in multiple areas which provided some challenges for the layout.

The Great Wolf Adventure Park houses several non-water attractions, including the Rustic Ridge Rock Wall and the Howlers Peak Ropes Course, that guests embark on an invigorating, multi-level climbing challenge traversing over Oliver’s Mining Co. where they can search for keepsake gemstones. For the mining area Bulach Custom Rock created the look and feel of actual dirt and stones with the Bomacron Erosion Series Dried Earth Texture and the Bomacron Small Sandstone pattern.

Additional activities include MagiQuest, the brand’s exclusive live-action adventure game where players follow clues and use interactive magic wands to discover relics and runes needed to defeat a fierce dragon. The Bomacron Fishscale Belgian Block pattern was used to create that old world feel of stone castles. The MagiQuest area was produced using the Bomanite Shale Gray Integral Color then utilizing a Bomanite Natural Gray Color Hardener wash before it was sealed.

The difficulty of the project was in both access and area control. Whereas multiple trades were utilizing the same spaces at the same time, Bulach Custom Rock installed all the stampable overlay during the overnight hours with the use of mostly temporary lighting. Due to Bomanite Thin-Set’s benefits of being trafficked quickly, Bulach Custom Rock was able to have the flooring installed on schedule.

Bomanite Thin-Set is a specially formulated polymer modified topping mix that will bond to any stable, structurally sound substrate. This unique system allows the installation of a thin, imprinted concrete topping when installed at 3/8″ thick and can be feathered to a zero edge that was helpful when the overlay needed to seamlessly match up to an existing tile floor entrance for the Great Wolf Lodge.

Bomanite Thin-Set is an extremely effective alternative to the demolition or remodel of an existing substrate, making it a perfect choice for the Great Wolf Lodge Renovation.

The Hilton Anatole Hotel Jade Waters Pool Complex

The Hilton Anatole Hotel is a landmark that spans 45 lush acres in the Dallas Design District just north of downtown. The hotel was constructed in 1979. The hotel has over 1600 guest rooms, ballrooms, five dining venues, a spa and health club, outdoor pool and 7-acre private Sculpture Garden. The hotel is host to many events, conferences, and conventions.

In 2015, Hilton broke ground on Jade Waters, a $20 million seasonal resort pool complex, utilizing 4 of the 7 acres of garden space. Jade Waters features a lazy river, two 180’ water slides, a children’s area and activity pool, leisure pool, swim-up bar and full-service restaurant. Cabanas and day beds are available in addition to the ample lounge seating. Jade Waters is exclusively for the use of hotel guests and health club members.

General Contractors, T&G Constructors, contacted Texas Bomanite in the Design Development phase of the project to work with Landscape Architecture firm TBG’s design team to provide finish options and budgeting to T&G Constructors. The hardscape portion of the project contains 60,000 square feet. Sample Boards of concrete finishes were provided to TBG prior to full-size mockups being constructed on-site. Two finishes from the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and three different colors were selected by TBG and Hilton from the jobsite mockups. The finishes were Bomanite Sandscape and Bomanite Sandscape Refined systems. The Bomanite Refined finish was also combined with a Bomanite Custom Imprint System to create a unique finish for the area of the project bounded by the Lazy River and referred to as the “Big Island”. This finish was also installed at the “Beach Entry” of the activity pool. The Imprint System combined with the Bomanite Sandscape finish simulates shifting sands on a beach.

Following approval of the mockups, the construction phase began. Due to unusually wet weather and soil conditions, the project had fallen behind schedule. T&G Constructors required an accelerated schedule to maintain the July opening date for the waterpark. This required crews to work six and seven day workweeks as well as holidays for several weeks. The congested site and wet soils presented another obstacle and required daily meetings with T&G Constructors Superintendents and their subcontractors for coordination of work areas as well as laydown areas. Recycled concrete fines was used in place of cushion sand to provide a better base on which to set forms and pour the concrete. Recycled concrete was also used to provide haul routes to get materials and equipment in and out of the site. The waterpark and garden opened in July of 2016 as scheduled.

Tandy Family YMCA

The Tandy Family YMCA opened in 2016 with more than 100,000 square feet dedicated to the pursuit of healthy living and community building; this state-of-the-art facility is built on the grounds of the 50-year old Thornton Family YMCA, one of the anchors of midtown Tulsa.

In collaboration with OU Physicians Center for Exercise and Sports Medicine, and OU Physical Therapy, the Tandy Family YMCA features three brand-new pools, new interactive fitness equipment, an all-seasons Splash Park and playground, with a focus on prevention and education.

Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite of Tulsa worked with GH2 Architects to choose the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System  for the exterior multi-use space. With the emphasis on ADA compliance and universal design, both Bomanite Revealed and Bomanite Sandscape Texture were incorporated. Bomanite Revealed was chosen for its ability to provide vibrant color, a Custom glass blend was created to compliment and unify the safety surfaces around the play areas. Bomanite Sandscape Texture in Gobi Desert was installed to provide for a more natural feel, its slip resistant/traction coefficient, appearance and longevity.

Capt. Petersen Splash Pad – Watson Park

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Bomanite Licensee, Harrington Bomanite Corp. installed multiple colors of Bomanite Color Hardener to give this splash pad a fun and entertaining feel. The splash pad at Watson Park was designed by Warner Larson Landscape Architects of Boston. Working with the Landscape Architect, Harrington Bomanite was able to suggest the best Bomanite products and system for the design to come alive. Bomanite Color Hardener provides the durability and strength needed to withstand climate changes.

The colorful, 4,000-square-foot play area in Watson Park, named after tugboat captain August J. Petersen, features mist sprayers, squirt guns and structures that spray water from the ground or dump it from overhead. Petersen was from Braintree whose generosity is legendary in the community. When he died in 1963, he left $65,000 to the town to build a swimming pool at Watson Park, a grassy recreational area on the bank of the Fore River, in the neighborhood of East Braintree, where he had lived. For nearly half a century, residents squabbled over where the pool should go, while Petersen’s gift sat in the bank and grew to about $2 million.

Decades later, Petersen’s dream has been realized, at least in part. On April 2, Braintree officials broke ground on a “splash pad” at Watson Park that has been named after Petersen. The town is also planning to build a pool and ice rink in honor of Petersen at Braintree High School with the remainder of the money.

Grand Park Lodge & Water Park of America

This particular project involved the installation of approximately 22,400 square feet of monolithic decorative floor on five different levels, including steps, curbing, structural bridges and ramps along with over 1500 lineal feet of pool coping which is poured and finished monolithically with the decks.

What makes this project unique is the different techniques and products that were utilized to produce the final result. The floors started as cast in place concrete, in which a base coat of color hardener was troweled into the floor, and then imprinted. After the floor was cured for a short period of time, a second color was added to the floor using a proprietary staining technique that gives the floor a beautiful variation without using the old style method of a powdered release agent. This process not only produced an exquisite final product, but due to the lack of dust provided by typical powdered releases, this process provided a much safer working environment for our employees and the other trades workers nearby. All coping areas were finished at the same time as the decks using a mixture of products to create a finished look that allows the coping to be part of the deck without having to be poured independently.

Another unique part of this project is the tremendous coordination that was involved with all the other trades. Because these floors were poured as monolithic slabs, these floors were being poured at the same time as overhead electrical, underground plumbing, painting, and theming, which made it very difficult to maintain a constant pouring schedule having to continuously work around lifts, scaffolding and excavating equipment all at the same time in an enclosed area.

All of these things, together with being able to use application of products and techniques in a “thinking out of the box” situation is what makes Bomanite Licensee, Bulach Custom Rock stand out from the crowd.

Grand Rios Waterpark

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Bulach Custom Rock, create handicap accessible ramps for one of the Midwest’s Largest Indoor Waterparks in Greater Minneapolis/St Paul, Minnesota.

Bulach Custom Rock scope of work included the set up and pour of approximately 11,000 sq.ft. of Bomcaron Imprinted Concrete with one 70’ handicap ramp, one 30’ handicap ramp with monolithic bridge, pan steps, a 60’ walking bridge, and two 8 riser sets of steps, along with over 2,000 lineal feet of Steigmeier pool coping poured monolithically with the deck.

Bomacron Slate Texture areas were poured using Bomanite Coquina Color hardener for the base color, then the areas were accented using a specialty color, Bulach Bronze, developed by Bomanite. Once these areas were imprinted, the pool coping was finished using a Bulach Bronze slurry and given a light sand finish. The pool copings were finished while there was water in the pools and river. This portion of the work was completed using a duck boat tied off in different areas. The Bomacron wood plank pattern areas were poured using a Taupe Integral color. These areas were stained the following day with Bomanite Forest Brown Con-Color.

The water park posed additional challenges, such as; designing a monolithic concrete ramp and bridge to accommodate wheelchairs to the upper hot tub, pouring of concrete using 5-gallon buckets due to inaccessibility of pumps or other delivery systems caused by water factors, and working to assure the slope of the decks flowed to over 1,000 feet of deco drain and 27’ panned floor drains. Bulach Custom Rock utilized their skills and expertise knowledge to overcome the challenges and provide the client with the final product.
