With a convenient location on the edge of the Front Range, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center offers a welcome reprieve from the usual. The hotel showcases the state’s alpine charm through every nature-inspired detail of the property. The Gaylord Resort is Colorado’s largest hotel built to date and was the largest hotel project under construction in the US during 2018. It was also the largest project Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes installed in 2018 with over 150,000 Square feet of architectural concrete imprint and flatwork placed.

The 1,501-room resort is joined by a 485,000 Square foot convention center and an extensive indoor/outdoor water park on a sprawling 85-acre site. Recreational facilities include a 800-foot lazy river, expansive event lawns, a resort style outdoor pool, 22,000-square-foot indoor pool venue with slides, tennis courts, pool bar, putting course and a basketball court. The outdoor space is planted with native vegetation and includes walking paths.

Colorado Hardscapes’ scope for the architects flooring and hardscape plans included the incredible Grand Lodge atrium, decks for two pools and the lazy river, all hotel and convention center entrances, and the west event center lawn and convention center sidewalks. A variety of Bomanite products and techniques were integrated to create multi-dimensional surfaces for this highly-animated rustic environment. Defining the right combination of materials, finishes, imprints, colors, hardeners and many other variables was no small effort. Three rounds of product samples and pricing were considered in pre-construction before finally arriving at the specified package.

In the Grand Lodge, the Bomacron Small Random Slate imprint pattern created a textured, rock walkway. Careful placement, impression-by-impression, assured a deliberately, on-repetitive, natural-looking result. Conversely, incorporating the Bomacron Running Bond Belgian Block imprint required rigorous placement precision to achieve an intentionally consistent look. Both imprints required extensive layout preplanning, consideration of mix-design constraints related to accessing work areas, and coordination with other trades.

Across the sprawling site, the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System was mixed with three different integral colors to produce a high-profile hardscape surface that feels great under bare feet for the indoor/outdoor pool decks and compliments the natural surroundings for the installed hardscape. Because the dry, loose soil of the Colorado prairie is difficult to grade and doesn’t hold moisture well, the Colorado Hardscape crews took special care to compact and re-compact work areas during site preparation to confidently assure long-lasting work. Crews completed a massive 21,000 hours while working together in three to four different areas around the site at the same time. The biggest challenge of this project was that the vast site and the enormous building required a multitude of trades to be working almost everywhere simultaneously.

Setting it apart from other similarly-sized resorts, Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center was designed to authentically capture a local sense of place. The resort’s interior design and décor is modeled after aspects iconic to Colorado – everything from cascading waterfalls over boulders and local nature artwork to native landscaping and elevators designed to look like old mine shafts. These planned elements carry over into guest rooms, with aspen tree-inspired carpets, lumberjack plaid print pillows and hiking and camping maps in the closets. The Convention Center includes charming Colorado details sprinkled throughout which represent ski tracks, snow drifts and snowflakes. The Bomanite Imprint Systems and Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture were the perfect Bomanite Decorative Concrete aspects to add cohesion with the interior flooring and exterior hardscapes of this native Coloradan built resort.

Musselman & Hall Contractors win award for sophisticated Bomanite Micro-Top Elmwood Restaurant Floor

Elmwood is a modern American restaurant founded by, Adam Altnether and Chris Kelling, inspired by their respective St. Louis and California roots, with influences from abroad. The restaurant boasts an open-yet-closed kitchen, a charcoal-burning grill, and the only charcoal-fueled oven in the United States. The menu highlights classic midwestern dishes inflected with global flavors and is complemented by a wine program proudly focused on California vintners, with a selection of offerings from international winemakers.

When Adam and Chris collaborated and decided that their new “live fire” restaurant in Maplewood would have some unusual aesthetic touches, they knew they both wanted to be in the mix of the design and construction phases. They contacted Architect Kyle Nottmeier to help fuel their vision and create an environment that looked like nothing else; exposed beams, artisanal pieces, neon signs, soft concrete floors, metal, brick and tiled walls.

The architect contacted Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC about flooring options for the restaurant space, given the challenges it presented they needed a contractor with full expertise in commercial renovations. The space had both wood framed floors as well as concrete decking with everything covering it from terrazzo to tile underlayment. After reviewing product samples and colors presented by Musselman & Hall Contractors, it was determined the best option would be the Bomanite Toppings Systems Micro-Top.

Bomanite Micro-Top uses cutting edge technology, that tenaciously bonds to virtually any substrate. It can be applied with a squeegee or troweled onto the surface at a thickness of approximately 20 mils. With the condition of the Elmwood Restaurant floor, Bomanite Micro-Top was perfect for renovating the multiple floor surfaces. Once awarded the project, Musselman & Hall Contractors began working directly with the owners as they were self-performing some of the construction and serving as the construction managers during the renovations.

Knowing that the floor demanded a substantial amount of preparation before the Bomanite Micro-Top could be placed, Musselman & Hall Contractors chose to place a layer of wire lathe over the areas of wood framed flooring, then covered the lathe with Bomanite Repair Mortar. They also used the Bomanite Repair Mortar to level and patch over the remaining area after grinding the surface with 25 grit diamonds. The floor was in such poor condition, the owners were excited just to see the prepped and primed floor without even one coat of Bomanite Micro-Top placed.

Once the surface prep was finally completed, the first base coat of Bomanite Micro-Top (white base) with a Bomanite Shale Gray tint was placed. The surface was primed with Bomanite XP Primer for the first base coat and primed using Bomanite Micro-Top liquid diluted for each following coat. Each base coat was sanded and then thoroughly cleaned. The finish coat was applied with steel trowels to provide some character in the floor. The idea was to emulate the look of a hard-troweled concrete floor. The effect turned out perfectly, pleasing the owners and architect.

The Bomanite Micro-Top floor along with the vertical areas at the entry ramp and stairs were given a final seal with two coats of Bomanite XP Primer FC and then two coats of Bomanite Natural Beauty floor finish. The transition of the floor astounded the other contractors and the owners. Musselman & Hall Contractors helped transition this neighborhood restaurant with Bomanite Decorative Concrete, providing a place for private conversation, relaxation and authentically creative food.

With Bomanite Micro-Top, a wide range of colors can be applied to create uniformity or blended to create variegation in the finish. Bomanite Micro-Top can reduce costly forming and coloring in outdoor treatments. Limitless color combinations and graphic designs can be used to transform damaged existing concrete or other materials into cementitious art forms, without affecting surrounding materials and fixtures. Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC won the 2018 Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project Bronze Award for their thoroughness and expertise with renovations of commercial interior flooring.

Texas Bomanite Receives Award for Cypress Waters Lobby using Bomanite VitraFlor

Cypress Waters is the newest 1,000-acre master-planned community to rise up in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Just five minutes from the DFW International airport, Cypress Waters is centered around a serene 300-acre lake, that entails office, multi-family and retail waterfront developments. The owners, Billingsley Co, wanted Cypress Waters to infuse waterfront living with the design principles of new urbanism and sustainable design. Their goal was to emphasize the benefits of a live / work community, and interconnect over 4.5 million square feet of office space with retail, parks, trails, and a lakeside town center.

Bomanite VitraFlor Custom Polished Concrete Floors installed by Texas Bomanite at the Cypress Waters Business Complex in Coppell Texas perfect for interior flooring lobbies

Bomanite Licensee, Texas Bomanite was brought in by the General Contractor, Adolfson & Peterson Construction to polish and seal 4,500 square feet of interior concrete flooring in the lobby of the 225,000 square foot office building at 9111 Cypress Waters Blvd. Designed by GFF Architects, Texas Bomanite lended to the modern, sustainable design of the architecture by polishing the concrete to a 1,500 grit with a salt and pepper finish. Texas Bomanite utilized the Bomanite Custom Polishing VitraFlor system; which consisted of grinding, chemical hardening with Bomanite Stabilizer Pro, and honing and polishing with Bomanite VitraFinish.

Prior to the final installation of the project Texas Bomanite also provided a 100 square foot mock-up, which allowed the architects and General Contractors a solid idea of exactly what the finished product would look like. Even the results on plain concrete can be stunning. The Bomanite Custom Polishing VitraFlor system can be utilized on existing or new uncolored concrete.

Bomanite VitraFlor utilizes select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to standards required for decorative polished concrete flooring. The concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist. The primary benefit to Bomanite VitraFlor is the simplicity of installation and durability of the finished floor, lending to its low-maintenance and long-term sustainable features.

One of the world’s most ubiquitous building materials may also strangely be one of the world’s most underappreciated. Able to withstand everyday foot traffic, tough weather, and the constant passage of time better than almost any material there is, concrete has become an indispensable part of the human experience.

“I love traveling and seeing how other cultures have identified with concrete,” says Ben Feldmann, a landscape architect and urban designer at Studio-MLA in Los Angeles, California. Through more than 25 years of experience, Feldmann has designed landscapes of every scale from courtyards to city parks and everything in between. As a principal at Studio-MLA, Feldmann finds himself working with a talented team of professionals to tackle some of the largest, most high-profile opportunities in the public realm. The recently completed Banc of California Stadium, home to the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) of Major League Soccer, is an excellent example of how design can respond to both ends of the scale – micro and macro – and how concrete can be the constant connection between them.

“The Banc of California Stadium is a major urban anchor intended to improve a corridor, connect to Exposition Park, and pay homage to the recently demolished L.A. Memorial Sports Arena,” says Feldmann. “That’s a big assignment with a lot of little details. The threads that connect the stadium to the city are thoughtful design and the hardscape.”

Designing with Budget in Mind

Located on the southeast corner of Exposition Park, the stadium joins a collection of world-class museums, entertainment venues, gardens, green space, and dining on a sprawling 160-acre campus that is a crossroads of the Los Angeles community. The site work package included approximately 140,000 square feet of concrete in a variety of types and forms. The design logically funnels spectators toward the stadium’s three corner entrances while addressing edge conditions and contributing to Exposition Park’s larger context of both active and passive uses.

“By virtue of budgets, decorative concrete as a design element has to be used judiciously,” says Feldmann. Studio-MLA identified the stadium’s entrances as areas to enhance with the highest-appeal decorative concrete design elements. “We worked with Bomel Construction to consider a lot of options and the end result is a very nice celebration of the whole Los Angeles Football Club experience.”

An Expert in Concrete

Shawn Devine loves concrete as well, it’s in his blood. Devine leads Bomel’s architectural and site division and has worked with concrete for over 30 years. Bomel is one of the largest concrete contractors in the U.S., building structural solutions for office towers, hotels, and parking structures along with both decorative and traditional flat work. Devine joined Bomel in 2011 to lead the architectural and site division. Today, Devine and the Bomel Construction team are delivering some of the most complex, high-profile architectural concrete projects in Southern California.

“We started pricing the stadium’s site work back in August 2015. The hardscape started out as pavers, and that wasn’t cost-effective,” says Devine. Over eight rounds of cost estimating in support of general contractor, PCL Construction, Devine’s team helped work through a variety of design alternatives before ultimately deciding on cast-in-place concrete as the primary building material. Working with the ownership team and designers at Gensler, the team scrutinized formwork layouts, rebar patterns, material choices, and saw cut pattering to deliver a beautiful design solution that could be built at a cost that worked within PCL’s Guaranteed Maximum Price.

“We incorporated three different Bomanite products, a heavy dose of craftsmanship, and Bomel’s commitment to quality and durability,” says Devine of the materials selected and the contracted scope. Bomel is part of a nation-wide network of Bomanite licensed contractors who share information, resources, expertise, and a commitment to exceptional craftsmanship in their work. Bomanite works with licensees to research and develop acute material mixes tailored to project specifics like team colors, local or exotic aggregates, coloring, and finishing techniques.

A proprietary mix of Bomanite’s Exposed Aggregate Sandscape in a San Diego Buff color was used to enhance the pedestrian experience at entrances, on benches, and as planter walls for trees and shrubs throughout plazas and on the roof deck landing. Clear and mirror glass flakes were broadcasted onto nearly 50,000 square feet at three entry plazas to add luster and friction to integrally colored concrete in LAFC hues. Spectator queuing is intuitively integrated underfoot as bands of Bomanite’s Exposed Aggregate Alloy in Cobblestone grey lead fans to ticket takers. A perimeter of Bomanite’s 11.5-inch Boardwalk imprint was also used to frame a raised seating area supporting the stadium’s food court.

Delivering on Expectations

One of the site’s most unusual design elements is the Flight Wall, a sculpted wall of fluted angels’ wings used to add prominence to a raised event podium. Cast in a one-of-a-kind, CNC-routed form liner, the concrete had to be poured along two feet of slope, and cure in place before the liner was released and peeled away.

50 Fifty DTC is a unique tower that contains a six-story office building above eight levels of parking (two underground) in the Denver Tech Center of Colorado. The area is known for its typical suburban office complex featuring buildings set among a sea of asphalt parking lots and expansive lawns. With the densification of the area the client wanted something different and design inspired by nautical nuances. The office building’s design was driven by a desire to express a strong sense of style on a highly visible property. Every material selected for the construction of 50 FIFTY was considered with only quality and performance in mind. From the handpicked granite to local artwork adorning the hallways, there were no short cuts taken, only design excellence.

50 Fifty DTC incorporates Bomanite Sandscape Refined Exposed Aggregate for the decorative concrete curbs and walkways and under the porte cochere installed by Colorado Hardscapes in Denver, CO to bring the Nautical Design to life

The 50 Fifty DTC office building employs floor-to-ceiling performance glass, and strategically placed light wells to both maximize site effectiveness and promote workplace wellness and sustainable design. 100% covered, secured parking at 3.5 spaces per 1,000 SF, Common Conference Room, Collaborative Lounge and Work Space Areas, State-of-the-Art Fitness Center, Secure Bicycle Storage & Mechanics Station, all with expansive views and high-end finishes appeal to companies who want the amenities and style of an urban location.

Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes’ scope of work was concentrated on the building’s grand porte-cochère. Tucked beneath a series of V-shaped structural members, the design creates a dramatic entry and is intricately articulated with lighting both above and below to resemble the motion of waves lapping against a vessel. Guests are greeted with a direct view into the marble-lined lobby through the elegant interior glass curtains. An adjacent terrace offers a semi-private garden level space.

The architects plan called for Bomanite’s Sandscape Refined Exposed Aggregate System, using a white Color Hardener and combining locally-sourced aggregates with crushed mirror glass to resemble the sun reflecting off the water for the curbs and walkways. The design called for a great deal of precision related to saw cuts both as joints and aesthetic elements. Saw-cut joints radiate toward the building in diverging rays and special, radius-cut joints were fit-out with illumination to mimic the undulating LED lights integrated overhead. Recognizing the difficulties with delivering a uniform finish with the Bomanite Sandscape Refined System on complex, curved, and multi-level surfaces, Colorado Hardscapes worked to address this challenge with additional technical training and multiple testing to produce the expected quality and hi-end result. The detailed walkways and curbs seamlessly match the interior décor which contrasts against the dark-grey Integrally Colored concrete broom finished drive lanes, creating a black-tie luxury experience.

Bomanite Sandscape Refined is an architectural exposed concrete with a very fine exposure depth. The Sandscape Refined System utilizes specialized concrete mix designs, dry shake color hardener and/or integral color, topical treatments and advanced application procedures to produce a finished product that showcases the fine aggregate. The final product is a unique alternate to other decorative concrete finishes that produces a monolithic concrete slab with a low life cycle cost due to the pre-aged nature of the surface. Bomanite Sandscape Refined is suited for exterior applications both new construction and major renovation projects. Bomanite Sandscape Refined is a perfect choice anywhere that improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary. Beyond Concrete Installs High-End Bomanite Modena Polished Concrete Floor for Iron Chef Michael Symon

Angeline by Michael Symon located in the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City uses Bomanite Decorative Concrete Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polished Concrete Floors installed by Beyond Concrete from Keyport, NJ for a Hi-end Iron Chef Restaurant

Angeline is Iron Chef and James Beard Award winner chef Michael Symon’s ode to classic Italian food, inspired by his heritage and personal history. Growing up with Greek and Sicilian influences, Michael Symon creates meaningful dishes that showcase his unabashed love for food, passionate hospitality and zest for life. The menu captures nostalgia with red-sauce style favorites from family recipes, including his mother Angeline’s Sunday Sauce. The design of the restaurant needed to reflect this balance of old and new world.

Parts and Labor Design, a New York-based interior design firm, whose breadth of work includes restaurants, bars, hotels and retail projects at every scale, collaborated with Philadelphia’s famed Cope-Linder Architects to pull together the design of the 8,200-square-foot Italian restaurant Angeline by Michael Symon. The 223-seat fine dining experience features a bar area, main dining room and private dining space, with the intent to showcase the soulful cooking and joyful personality synonymous with the award-winning chef. It’s described as a mix of casino glam with the comfortable familiarity of a typical neighborhood Italian restaurant.

Bomanite Licensee, Beyond Concrete, having worked previously on several other top-chef restaurants at the Borgata, was brought in by Cope-Linder Architects to make sure the restaurant interior flooring was up to the design standards and within budget. Knowing the specification called for approximately 1,800 of square feet of polished concrete floors, Beyond Concrete proceeded with showcasing several custom samples with variety of colors and depth of exposure, to the architect as well as to ABC’s The Chew co-host Chef Michael Symon. The Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polishing System was chosen for its sleek and modern design, complimenting the mixed media used throughout the dining establishment.

In preparation for the Bomanite Modena SL System the floorings base slab needed to be corrected as it was extensively out of level and in poor condition. Custom colors in black and brown pigments were mixed for the final color placement of the Bomanite Modena SL System. Once cured, the flooring was ground and polished to a medium satin finish and given two coats of Bomanite Stainguard for that final seal and durable protection. Beyond Concrete’s expertise in the field made sure that the high-end restaurant was engineered for a super star review.

The Bomanite Modena Custom Polishing System is an engineered interior cementitious topping that is blended with selected aggregates and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level. The Modena system transforms existing or worn surfaces into beautiful walkways, showrooms, restaurants and lobbies and is available in a range of colors and patterns using decorative sawcuts. Additional topically applied stains and a variety of aggregates, such as recycled glass or porcelain along with regionally sourced materials, are all options in creating a beautifully designed, environmentally friendly and functional floor. The Modena system is a low-cost alternative for renovation projects and provides the durability and strength for this exceptionally long lifespan system. With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Modena by Bomanite is the optimal choice for renewed surfaces.

Premier Concrete Construction Receives Awards for Bomanite Grasscrete and Bomanite Toppings Residential Project

The owners of this grand estate in Essex County, Massachusetts installed several Bomanite systems throughout their property. Essex County Estate Installs Bomanite Grasscrete and Bomanite Toppings Systems by Premier Concrete Construction, LLC

Bomanite Licensee, Premier Concrete Construction, LLCwas contacted by the owner to provide a solution to a badly poured concrete garage foundation. Premier Concrete Construction remedied the garage issue, and then installed the Bomanite Broadcast Flake Toppings System in a salt and pepper finish for two separate garage units combining a total of approx. 2,700 sq. ft.

The homeowner wanted a durable flooring surface for luxury as well as off-road vehicles. Bomanite Broadcast Flake floors are multi-colored flakes encapsulated in high performance, two-component primer, body and top coats that give an architectural design and at the same time create a protective flooring system for long term use wear and tear. The Bomanite Broadcast Flake System utilizes Bomanite Florspartic 100 to create a highly durable, low maintenance surface and provides superior chemical resistance including gasoline, oil and de-icing salts.

The Bomanite Broadcast Flake System contains zero VOC’s and is a fast track flooring system that can be applied over prepared concrete and suitable cementitious toppings to form a seamless surface ideal for residential and light commercial applications such as garage floors, basements, indoor recreational facilities, schools and light manufacturing.

Various graphic designs or patterns, such as logos, family crests, homeowners’ initials, favorite sporting team emblems may be incorporated into a Bomanite Broadcast Flake System. Flake color blends are available in several sizes and custom flake colors such as metallic and fluorescent shades, glow in the dark and silver sparkle deliver unlimited creativity.

After working with Premier Concrete on the garage project and reviewing additional needs, the homeowner acquired Premier Concrete’s services for a Bomanite Pervious Concrete System. The homeowner wanted a pervious cobblestone driveway for the tradesmen estate entrance. The driveway needed to reflect the exterior design of the home and be able to handle storm water runoff.

Bomanite Grasscrete is the green alternative to standard concrete surfaces providing a variety of landscape solutions while maintaining a sustainable green product design used for emergency access lanes, delivery access routes, overflow parking areas, and for intermittent drainage channels that help prevent erosion.

Bomanite Pervious Concrete helps with Stormwater management for this Essex County Estate

Grasscrete has been used as an exposed utilitarian product for functional applications and as a concealed system with vegetation such as grass or native ground cover installed over the concrete allowing consumers to mitigate drainage issues while maintaining strong structural integrity for some of the heaviest vehicles to operate unencumbered. The Partially Concealed Grasscrete System provides the differential spacing you see with cobblestones giving the homeowner the look desired.

The Grasscrete single-use molded pulp formers were shaped and laid on the sub grade at approx. 1,300 sq. ft. to create the access for the service vehicles. Concrete was poured and placed over the formers and then voids were opened after the concrete hardened, allowing for grass to be planted. Grasscrete offers the ability to provide year-round access for a variety of applications requiring structural paving surfaces without compromising the aesthetics of the exterior landscaping.
