Musselman and Hall Delivers Eagle Way Excellence

Eagle Way Elegance: A Corridor That Commands Attention

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Renaissance at Grain Valley High School.

From the moment students and visitors step inside, Eagle Way sets the tone for an unforgettable first impression.  This central circulation corridor at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, MO, was designed to be more than a hallway, it is a defining architectural feature.  Serving as the primary pathway for daily movement, Eagle Way connects classrooms, common areas, and the heart of the school.  The project represents the continuation of a landmark decorative concrete installation originally completed in 2019 by Musselman & Hall Contractors LLC.  That first phase established a bold visual identity that quickly became synonymous with the school’s brand.  Five years later, the challenge was not just to expand the space, but to flawlessly extend its established aesthetic.  Every design decision needed to respect the original vision while elevating performance and durability.  This made Eagle Way a true test of craftsmanship, consistency, and long-term planning.

Precision Planning: Project Partners and Professional Collaboration

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Renaissance at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, MO.

Successful decorative concrete projects are built on strong collaboration, and this one was no exception.  The General Contractor, Newkirk Novak Construction, coordinated the complex logistics of a live school environment.  Architectural leadership was provided by Hollis & Miller, whose design vision emphasized continuity, creativity, and longevity.  Early alignment between contractor, architect, and installer was critical to meeting expectations set by the original phase.  Detailed discussions focused on traffic patterns, lighting conditions, and long-term wear.  The goal was to ensure the new work felt indistinguishable from the original installation.  This level of coordination minimized surprises during construction and protected the integrity of the design.  The result was a seamless process that balanced schedule, quality, and architectural intent.

Material Mastery: A Deep-Grind Decorative Concrete Statement

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Renaissance at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, MO.At the core of the project was a 2-inch unbonded topping slab designed for both visual impact and durability.  The surface was seeded with a custom blend of dark blue, light blue, and mirrored glass aggregates.  These materials were carefully selected to reflect school colors and enhance light play throughout the corridor.  After placement, the slab was ground and polished to a deep grind, revealing the full character of the aggregates.  This process created a striking, high-definition surface with depth and dimension.  The polished finish also supports heavy foot traffic without sacrificing appearance.  Every square foot was executed with precision to ensure uniform exposure and consistent sheen.  The finished surface delivers both aesthetic drama and long-term performance.

Seamless Solutions: Blending New Installations with Existing Spaces

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Renaissance at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, MO.To maintain visual cohesion, the existing concrete floor in the cafeteria and multi-purpose room was also addressed.  That original slab was ground and polished to a deep aggregate exposure matching Eagle Way’s new finish.  This approach ensured the transition between spaces felt intentional and unified.  Matching new decorative concrete to existing installations is one of the most technically demanding aspects of polished concrete work.  Differences in age, mix design, and wear patterns must all be carefully managed.  The team approached this challenge with methodical testing and refinement.  Lighting conditions and viewing angles were also evaluated to ensure consistency throughout the space.  The result is a unified environment where old and new surfaces work together seamlessly.  This continuity reinforces the architectural strength of the entire facility.

Mockups and Mastery: Recreating a Five-Year-Old Finish

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Renaissance at Grain Valley High School in Grain Valley, MO.Reproducing the exact look of a project completed five years earlier required extensive preparation.  Multiple samples were created in the contractor’s shop to fine-tune color, aggregate density, and grind depth.  Each mockup was evaluated against the original installation for accuracy.  Minor adjustments were made until the finishes aligned perfectly.  This process ensured that the new phase respected the legacy of the 2019 Grand Award-winning project.  Close collaboration with the architect helped confirm that every detail met the original design intent.  Patience and precision were essential throughout this stage.  The sampling process ultimately protected the visual integrity of Eagle Way.  From the architect, “The polished concrete floor in the Eagle Way at Grain Valley High School is a huge piece of the overall success and impact of the project.  From the beginning, the vision was to create something very special and unique to the project.  Musselman & Hall was integral in making that vision become a reality.  Their help in assembling early samples, tweaking mixes, creating mock-ups and ultimately the care taken to achieve the final product was fantastic!

Connecticut Bomanite Crafts Campus Continuity with Captivating Concrete at Yale

Pedestrian Pathway Perfection

Bomanite Sandscape Texture by Connecticut Bomanite Systems at Yale Gibbs Court.Few campus landmarks carry both the weight of history and the daily wear of thousands of footsteps quite like Gibbs Court, the prominent pedestrian corridor linking Yale University’s Sterling Chemistry and Sloane Physics Laboratories.  Honoring the legacy of Josiah Willard Gibbs, this redesigned hardscape project demanded a finish that could balance beauty with durability in one of the university’s busiest spaces.  Connecticut Bomanite Systems was selected as the installer due to their trusted track record of delivering exceptional decorative concrete projects for Yale.  Turner Construction Inc. served as the general contractor, while the architectural vision was crafted by Stantec.  Together, the project team chose Bomanite Sandscape® Texture, a surface known for its refined aesthetic and high-performance qualities.  This decorative concrete solution offered slip resistance, long-lasting strength, and low maintenance—crucial for institutional use where safety and endurance are paramount.  The decision set the stage for an innovative installation that would elevate Gibbs Court into a functional yet commemorative landmark.

Challenging Construction Circumstances

Bomanite Sandscape Texture by Connecticut Bomanite Systems at Yale Gibbs Court.Executing the project at Yale was far from simple, as the construction sequence introduced unique challenges that tested the experience and creativity of the team.  The main section of Gibbs Court was poured and sealed in the fall, only to be buried under metal plates and dirt for more than eight months while a massive underground tunnel excavation for steam lines proceeded nearby.  Heavy machinery, constant traffic, and prolonged cover put significant pressure on the newly installed decorative concrete slab.  Remarkably, the Bomanite Sandscape® Texture surface withstood these extreme conditions, maintaining integrity despite unpredictable curing.  When crews returned, the original installation stood strong, showcasing the resilience and reliability of Bomanite’s engineered systems.  This stage of the project demonstrated how advanced decorative concrete technology can endure even the most demanding construction environments.

Supplier Setbacks Surmounted

Bomanite Sandscape Texture by Connecticut Bomanite Systems at Yale Gibbs Court.

As work resumed, the Connecticut Bomanite Systems crew faced another hurdle: the original concrete supplier had depleted the sand needed for consistency with the initial pour.  Switching bins or sourcing substitutes could have created visible differences in color, texture, and finish, jeopardizing the project’s continuity.  To solve this issue, a new supplier was identified, and the team worked with meticulous precision to replicate the exact appearance of the earlier installation.  This level of craftsmanship highlights the artistry required in decorative concrete work, where even slight variations can affect the overall harmony of a high-profile campus setting.  By carefully managing mix design, finishing, and curing processes, the installers ensured a seamless transition between phases.  Their success reinforced why Connecticut Bomanite Systems is trusted for technically demanding and architecturally sensitive projects.

Safety, Signage, and Surroundings

Bomanite Sandscape Texture by Connecticut Bomanite Systems at Yale Gibbs Court.Beyond the decorative paving, the Gibbs Court renovation introduced a series of upgrades that enhance the pedestrian experience across the corridor.  New lighting systems were added to ensure visibility and safety during evening hours, while expanded security measures provided an added layer of comfort for daily users.  Upgraded signage improved navigation between the laboratories and surrounding facilities, aligning the space with Yale’s broader campus identity.  Landscaping enhancements added greenery and texture, creating a more welcoming environment that balances the surrounding architecture with natural beauty.  These holistic improvements transformed Gibbs Court from a utilitarian passageway into a vibrant, multi-functional campus connector.  The result is a safer, more aesthetically appealing public space that encourages both academic and social engagement.

Bomanite Sandscape® Surface Strengths

Bomanite Sandscape Texture by Connecticut Bomanite Systems at Yale Gibbs Court. The selection of Bomanite Sandscape® Texture was not accidental, but a deliberate choice rooted in its proven performance benefits for high-traffic, high-visibility applications.  This decorative concrete finish provides an elegant, sandblasted look while incorporating exposed fine aggregates, giving the surface both beauty and texture.  It is exceptionally slip-resistant, an essential feature in pedestrian corridors that experience heavy foot traffic in varying weather conditions.  Maintenance requirements are minimal, making it cost-effective for long-term institutional management.  Its durability ensures that the surface maintains its appeal even after years of use, resisting the wear that often diminishes other paving options.  For Yale University, this meant a dependable solution that met stringent performance requirements without compromising on design.  Gibbs Court is now a showcase of how Bomanite Sandscape® Texture can seamlessly merge functionality with visual sophistication.

After several donations and designs, work started in January of 2023 with the first phase of sidewalk reconstruction.  This pathway, originally an Eagle Scout project, was beginning to fail due to not having a proper footing.  Several of the bricks were also becoming dislodged creating a trip hazard.  Considering the tight budget, it was decided to reuse and reconstruct the pathway and CMU block wall components, dig and install a proper footer, then pour an imprinted textured sidewalk.  Three future donor plaque walls were also incorporated in this first phase along with wall lighting.

Carolina Bomanite installed Statesville Christian School Lion’s Plaza area featuring Bomanite Micro-Top XT.Once work started, additional funding became available which allowed an expansion of the original plans to include a Lions Plaza promenade walkway, covered picnic area and composite deck gathering platforms.  Once the scope expanded Carolina Bomanite Corporation began to look at how the space needed to be improved in terms of elevation.  What originally was a bare, sloping expanse needed to be brought to near level even though they were dealing with seven-plus feet of elevation drop.  To correct, a concrete support wall was constructed in the shape of the new Lions Plaza.  During this phase a gas fire pit was installed at the request of the school using blue glass.  Drainage lines were rerouted, French drains installed, as well as low voltage wiring added for lighting.  Due to a few large shade trees in the area, washed stone was used to backfill without disturbing the subsoil and shallow roots.  Having a quarry a half mile from the school proved valuable and cost efficient.

Tiered Transitions and Textured Treatments

Carolina Bomanite installed Statesville Christian School Lion’s Plaza area featuring Bomanite Micro-Top XT.Two levels were designed in order to transition from the picnic zone down to the main walkway.  Synthetic turf was used to handle the steeper transitions between these two areas which also warmed up the space by breaking up the large expanses of concrete.  The upper levels were kept consistent to allow easy travel to the restrooms located at the side of the building.  After the main promenade walkway was installed with Bomanite Slate Texture, work began on the spirit rock entrance by removing the existing asphalt.  Bomanite Slate Texture imprinted concrete was used here as well due to the entire space to receive pigmented Bomanite Micro-Top XT.  After several samples and testing, a red was chosen that once sealed provided a near match to the school’s colors.

School Spirit and Stunning Surfaces

Carolina Bomanite installed Statesville Christian School Lion’s Plaza area featuring Bomanite Micro-Top XT.Ben Hummel, the Head of School, requested that some of the school’s core values and logo be added to the main promenade.  After waiting for summer sports to slow down, the installation of Bomanite Micro-Top XT began in August.  Due to the higher daytime temperatures, Carolina Bomanite Corporation switched their detail crew to nights to combat the high temps.  A four-man crew worked for several weeks from midnight to 8-9am each day.  The white banding was applied first with the red infill last.  Both colors were applied by roller using two coats.  Once complete, the entire space received two coats of Bomanite Sealer.  After a short cure, the graphics were applied, and additional Bomanite Micro-Top XT was used.  The school’s logo turned out to be a challenge, but with seasoned detail veteran Gary Barnhill, it was completed in two days.  The installation of Bomanite Micro-Top XT and graphics took approx. two months including cure times.

Polished Perfection: Renaissance by Bomanite Delivers Stunning Floors

Main entry and stairway using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems and Bomanite Renaissance installed by Musselman and Hall.Bomanite Renaissance, part of the Bomanite Custom Polishing System, transforms concrete floors with unmatched elegance and efficiency.  By integrating Bomanite Integral Color into the concrete at placement, this system achieves deep, rich color saturation that eliminates the need for topical dyes or coatings. Once cured, the surface is processed using the Bomanite VitraFlor System, which grinds, polishes, and seals the concrete to reveal the desired gloss and aggregate exposure.  This streamlined approach reduces labor while ensuring a vibrant, durable finish, making it a cost-effective choice for new construction and major renovations.  Ideal for full-depth pours, suspended slabs, and thick toppings, Renaissance offers flexibility across various applications while delivering stunning, consistent results.

Color Consistency and Construction Efficiency

Main entry and stairway using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems and Bomanite Renaissance installed by Musselman and Hall. The key to Bomanite Renaissance’s vibrant finishes lies in its high pigment loading of 3.6% or greater, ensuring superior color uniformity compared to common systems with lower pigment levels. This consistency mitigates raw material variations typical in ready-mixed concrete, guaranteeing flawless floors every time.  Designed for efficiency, the Bomanite Renaissance system mimics the simplicity of polishing uncolored concrete while achieving a luxurious terrazzo-like appearance.  Whether in schools, offices, or retail spaces, this system combines ease of installation with exceptional durability.  With its ability to create polished, eye-catching floors at a reasonable cost, Bomanite Renaissance sets a new standard for integrally colored concrete surfaces.

Musselman & Hall Masterfully Modernizes Lee’s Summit High School with Bomanite Belcolore

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors.

In Lee’s Summit, MO, Lee’s Summit High School underwent an $80 million dollar renovation.  The 60,000 SF expansion featured a new centralized media center, outdoor learning spaces, and an extensive transformation of the façade as well as the existing classrooms and public spaces.  The total duration of project construction took approximately two years to complete.  JE Dunn was chosen as the main contractor and Multistudio was chosen as the Project Designer.  Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC was selected to execute the architectural vision of decorative concrete which consisted of an expansive installation of Bomanite Belcolore system throughout the public spaces and thoroughfares.  The project also utilized precast stair elements with monolithic tread and riser matching the flooring.  The stakeholders chose Bomanite Charcoal Gray color hardened polished floors and precast treads.  Installing the Belcolore finish on a large scale as well as in the precast treads were both charting in new territory not just for Musselman & Hall, but seemingly anywhere.

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors. The treads were doubly challenging with the monolithic battered riser.  They were poured upside down into the forms by first spraying a ¼” thick coat of concentrated color hardener mixed with water and other admixtures using a hopper gun.  Then back built with a lightweight aggregate concrete mix. The floors were poured as a 3″ thick topping slab.  Musselman & Hall placed a standard floor mix and roughly floated.  Then once the slab had set enough to allow their concrete craftsmen to get on it without sinking, they spread a pound and a half of color hardener per square foot.  When the hardener had soaked through, from the slab moisture, they worked it to a cream with 4-foot pan walk behind power trowels.  Eventually they switched to combo blades to get the final finish desired.  After the slabs were cured out and phasing allowed, they gave the floors a fairly standard paste polish with only minor accommodations made for the color hardened surface.  The project was in numerous phases and stretched from Nov 2021 to July 2023.  Some of the stair treads were cast and stored for over a year before installed.

Bomanite Belcolore Bold Breakthrough in Concrete Coloring

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors. The Bomanite Belcolore system, part of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems, is revolutionizing the way decorative concrete surfaces are finished and maintained in both new constructions and major renovations. This innovative system utilizes Bomanite Color Hardener, which is applied directly onto the surface of freshly placed concrete.  The Color Hardener is evenly distributed over the surface and then expertly troweled, akin to the traditional finishing of concrete.  This method not only ensures a uniform color distribution but also enhances the surface’s durability.  Once the concrete has cured, it undergoes a paste polishing process to achieve the desired gloss level, followed by treatment according to the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System. This approach eliminates the need for topically applied dyes or stains, offering a more robust and long-lasting finish.  The final product is a high-gloss, abrasion-resistant surface that is distinguished for its beauty and durability.

One of the standout features of the Bomanite Belcolore system is its superior abrasion resistance, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas where longevity is key.  The range of color options available with the Bomanite Color Hardener is significantly broader than those offered by integrally colored concrete, allowing for customization and versatility in design.  This vast variety ensures that each project can achieve a unique aesthetic without sacrificing the structural integrity of the concrete.  Furthermore, the Bomanite Belcolore system is specifically designed for environments undergoing significant transformations, such as new buildings or extensive refurbishments, where a reliable and effective flooring solution is critical.  By integrating the color during the concrete’s initial placement and finishing stages, the system also streamlines the construction process, reducing additional steps and materials typically involved in achieving such high-quality results.

The application of the Bomanite Belcolore system offers numerous advantages for architects and builders looking to incorporate durable, architecturally pleasing decorative concrete surfaces in their projects.  Not only does the system provide a wide array of vibrant, intense color choices, but it also contributes to a more sustainable construction practice by eliminating the need for frequent repairs or replacements.  This method aligns with modern construction standards that prioritize both aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability.  The ease of maintenance and the enduring quality of the finishes ensure that the installations remain attractive and functional for years to come.  As more construction and renovation projects seek innovative solutions that combine form and function, the Bomanite Belcolore system stands out as a leading choice for achieving superior, polished decorative concrete surfaces.

Texas Bomanite Transforms Two Elementary Schools

Buildings have a life span, but more importantly they often have an earlier shelf life, as was the case for two elementary schools in Central Texas.  The Del Valle ISD (Independent School District) is a public educational district located in the Del Valle area, which is an unincorporated part of Travis County, TX.  This district provides educational services to a significant portion of southeast Travis County.  The district encompasses several incorporated communities, including Creedmoor, Webberville, the majority of Mustang Ridge, and some sections of Austin.  In conjunction with the 2019 voter approved Bond proposition, and an architecture schematic subsequently created by Pfluger Architects, Del Valle ISD contracted American Constructors as the General Contractor to demolish and replace two of the district’s oldest campuses, Hornsby-Dunlap Elementary and Smith Elementary.  American Constructors selected Texas Bomanite to install the decorative concrete in both schools.

Texas Bomanite was asked by American Constructors to provide over 70,000 SF of Diamond Polished, Dyed, and stamped concrete throughout the elementary school for each of the schools.  The project scope and timeline took three months to complete and included an initial mockup for each school prior to installation, 1500 grit polished concrete with Salt and Pepper aggregate exposure, a dyed concrete geometric design throughout the floors, and a school logo unique to each school.  The colors used for the geometric floor design were Sweet Potato, Black Orchid, Pineapple, Blueberry, Pine Green, and Turquoise.  The decorative concrete chosen for both of the installations were Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite VitraFlor and Bomanite Patène Teres, Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Patène Artectura, and Bomanite Imprint Systems.

Meanwhile, the Bomanite Patène Teres system is designed to color fully cured concrete during the polishing process, using Bomanite Chemical Stains and Bomanite Concrete Dyes. Starting with a base of uncolored gray concrete, which may include Bomanite Integral Color or Bomanite Color Hardener applied during placement, the floor undergoes grinding, staining, or dyeing, and then follows the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System process. The key advantage of Bomanite Patène Teres lies in its ability to introduce a wide spectrum of topical colors to concrete. When combined with skilled saw cutting techniques for patterns or designs, this process can elevate concrete to a form of art, offering a range from simple monochromatic tones to bright, vibrant hues and a variety of finishes from urban sophistication to varied, rustic styles.  Like Bomanite VitraFlor, Bomanite Patène Teres is primarily aimed at new construction or major renovation projects.
