University Village Apartments Pool Deck

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Bomanite Licensee, Jeffco Concrete Contractors, Inc. located in Tuscaloosa, AL worked with the Blakeney Company to install almost 9,000 square feet of Bomacron Imprinted Concrete. The pattern chosen was large Ashlar Slate for the pool decking of the University Village Apartments.

Residents at the University Village Apartments have a choice of 8 pools to swim in, lounge in and even to play pool in. Bomanite Coquina Color Hardener was used with a mixture of Bomanite Release Agent of Sand and White to achieve the cohesive colors and provide the realistic look of slate.

The light colors chosen for the pool decking also contain a higher solar reflectance. Solar Reflectance is the ratio of the amount of solar radiation reflected from a material to the amount shone on the material. The higher the Solar Reflectance the greater the amount of light from both ultraviolet and the visible spectrum is reflected from the substrate. This is also known as Albedo. The Bomanite Color Hardeners and Release Agents in this project would qualify for a LEED rated project.

Solterra The Retreat Clubhouse

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Solterra, the site of the 2008 Parade of Homes, needed a hardscape solution that fit the Tuscan-themed clubhouse and would be functional for each area of this upscale development, including the main drop-off area, the pool deck, and the patios.

Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes, installed Bomacron imprinted and colored concrete and an integral color swirl finish, keeping within the budget and achieving the desired look. The main drop-off, the entry area, and the focal walkway leading to the pool utilized the Bomacron Roman Cobble pattern. Technicians grouted in the stones in the pedestrian areas while the stones in the vehicular areas were stained to look like grout.   The integral color swirl finish completed the unique design with bands used to separate the different areas and to bring detail to the patios. The field areas of these 5-inch, reinforced, monolithic pours received a stained finish to give it a different color than the bands.

The bull nose steps coordinate with the bull nose pool coping. A sandblasted and stained quote from Michelangelo, etched into the concrete, graces both entries. The poured-in place column bases in the amphitheater and the giant planter caps match the precast finish on the walls

Sprint Center Arena Moon’s Plaza

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

The Sprint Center opened in Oct. 2007 and it is Kansas City’s home for sports, concerts, family shows, collegiate competitions, tournaments and special events. Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall installed 64,000 of concrete hardscapes during the construction of the arena. A small portion of their work involved The Moon’s Plaza.

The project designer, Chris Doyle, created The Moons as the Percent-for-Art component of the Sprint Arena, in Kansas City, Missouri. In front of the huge glass arena, Mr. Doyle created a plaza with three elliptical gardens, each with a water component.  Hanging above each of the gardens is a moon, a circular LED video screen that shows individuals flying across the screen simulating orbiting the arena. Musselman & Hall, brought the surface to life resembling rock and sand textures with Bomanite’s Imprint and Exposed Aggregate Systems. A custom imprint pattern of random rocks was designed to achieve a natural stone look once stamped and colored with Bomanite Black Color Hardener. Along with the imprinted surface Bomanite Sandscape Texture integrally colored in white was woven through the design to provide contrast, movement and flow to the surroundings.

The Caribbean Beach Resort – Old Port Royal Swimming Pool

The Caribbean Beach Resort – Old Port Royal Swimming Pool won an Honorable Mention Award in the Best Bomanite Imprint Commercial Project category in Bomanite’s 2008 Annual Project Award Contest.

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Edwards Concrete Company completed in 2008 The Caribbean Beach Resort Pool Feature Upgrade at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. Disney wanted to remodel the swimming pool area to be themed like an old fort somewhere in The Caribbean. Edwards used 408 yards of concrete and over 5,000 feet of lumber, and 34 tons of rebar to build and pour fort walls, a waterslide feature, remodeled the restrooms, light pole bases, and a kid’s water park area. Edwards also formed stamped, colored and  finished the swimming pool deck with a Bomanite Coquina stamp, Limestone color and a walnut release for a total of 22,000 sq. ft. The Edwards Concrete team spent more than 6,000 hours on this project. Work was started in March and finished in September to achieve their deadlines. The project theme was a success and gave the client the Caribbean feel they desired.

East 54 Parking Plaza

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Carolina Bomanite, began working with Winston-Salem, N.C. Architects Dishner Moore more than a year in advance of the construction of this urban village of luxury condos, shops and dining in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Architect, Craig Dishner, “had a vision of creating a spectacular plaza design to be viewed and enjoyed at street level and above from the residential tenants”. After several mock-ups were completed and reviewed, a decision was made to use Bomanite’s Micro-Top as the topically applied coloration system over a custom “machine-swirl” integrally colored surface design for the plaza. Negotiations began with the General Contractor, Resolute Builders, to be the prime decorative flatwork contractor for this project. Carolina Bomanite had previously worked with the developer, East West Partners on other projects.

The initial phase began with the installation of the main entrance roundabout granite textured curb, along with 8000sf of dry-shake color- hardened Bomacron® Fishscale Granite Setts pattern paving. The curb was poured with an integral color at a low slump, hand shaped, then textured and barcut to resemble hand-placed granite. The ADA warning strip that followed the outer contour of the roundabout posed several problems. First, the original design called for a stamped pattern using geometric shapes. We soon realized that this would be both an installation, and aesthetic issue when installed. Carolina Bomanite quickly suggested a hand-tooled, grooved pattern that followed the radius of the contour. After several calls and letters to the town of Chapel Hill, an approval was given to install the grooved pattern. All parties agreed, this was an excellent solution to a difficult problem.

The plaza, a 25,000sf parking and mixed use space, was designed not only to be parking, but also become an entertainment venue on weekends and evenings. The decorative topping slab was designed to be a 4-7” integrally colored slab with the special “swirl” finish. High summer temperatures made working on this sub-slab almost unbearable. The decision was made to convert the 10-man crew to night work with forming beginning at 11:00pm and the first of 2 pours at 2-3:00am each morning. A cast-in-place stage with cascading steps was the first pour of this phase of the project, followed with several hundred ft. of ADA warning bands. Since the deck was previously waterproofed, all forms were set using sandbags for support. Only 2 finishers were allowed to complete the custom “machine-swirl” pattern in order to keep consistency throughout the project. After the plaza was installed, the 4-man finish crew came in to begin the layout and sawcut of the plaza design. A template was used to layout the geometric shapes. Precise layouts from the GC’s site superintendent Chris Hardee allowed the design to go in precisely to plan. After a thorough cleaning, the Bomanite® Micro-Top product was installed in a “reddish” color to compliment the decorative brick design used on the buildings exterior. Water based sealers were then applied to protect the colored areas.

Fillmore Center Plaza

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Bay Area Concretes, Inc. installed 17,000 square feet of new 4” & 5” thick architectural concrete paving over 4” of sub base materials for The Fillmore Center Plaza Hardsape Renovation. Reinforcement with #4 steel rebar and dowels at all paving intersections provided the extra durability for this outdoor plaza located in San Francisco, CA. Architecturally finished cast-in-place color hardened concrete walls were installed up to 12’ high, as well as custom concrete radius seatwalls and a custom Cobalt Blue concrete fountain utilizing laser cut form materials and custom finishing tools to provide a distinctive and lively look for the nearby residents.

Bay Area Concretes employed a special exotic aggregate surface finishing technique involving the use of recycled Glass Aggregates in blue at the fountain area, red and green in the plaza area, and also a large custom green Malaysian rock blend in the highlight bands of the Plaza. The aggregate surface and the Bomanite hardscape paving was designed by AXIS Architecture + Design, in unison with Bay Area Concretes. AXIS developed design guidelines to encourage upscale retailers and food service providers to intensify and enliven the pedestrian experience of this mixed-use residential community occupying 3 city blocks.

Exposed aggregate blended paving types are typically placed over the surface of newly placed full thickness concrete at approximately 1/4”-3/8” thickness – the same day gray concrete is placed. The surface is then revealed and sealed. Bomacron Slate texture and cream color hardeners were used in the perimeter paving areas that surround the main Plaza, as well as city sidewalks in the streets of San Francisco, providing a monolithic, reinforced design and color-hardened surface of structural integrity and surface strength for hotels, theme parks, restaurants, office buildings, retail centers, and single or multi-family homes. Saw cuts were made to form the bands of design and to create a distinguished look of the alternating exposed surfaces and imprinted concrete. This newly renovated Plaza offers outdoor concerts, movies, and weekly Farmers Market to the community.

Steichen Residence

The owners of the home were looking for a low maintenance pool deck that would complement the existing architecture of their 80 year-old house. They were also concerned with choosing quality products and having them installed by highly skilled and licensed decorative concrete professionals. They found the best in Bomanite and looked to the local Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Harriman’s Bomanite for the job.

Harriman’s Bomanite provides quality products installed by quality people. The family owned company, based out of Spencer, IN, offers a variety of decorative concrete products and systems, and are dedicated to the highest standards of quality and service. Offering everything from imprinted concrete (Bomanite Imprint Systems, the original cast-in-place, colored and imprinted architectural concrete paving), toppings systems (Patène Artectura) to exposed aggregate systems and Grasscrete, Harriman’s Bomanite has the architectural concrete solution for you.

Fresno Fairgrounds Entrance

Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Heritage Bomanite, was asked to join the team of contractors creating a newly designed entrance to the Fresno Fairgrounds. Heritage Bomanite worked closely with Wildwood Pools in designing the layout and materials to be used. The Bomacron pattern Large Sandstone was chosen for the surface of the entrance. To provide a natural look Bomanite Sand Color Hardener and Natural Gray and  Bomanite Franciscan Red Release Agent were chosen for the color option. Seat walls and caps were also installed along with the custom rock and small water features that were created.

Idyllwilde Recreation Center

Client Need:
The designer wanted to create the look of an old time watering hole for this community center building.

Solution:
Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes integrated Sandscape Texture with Bomanite imprinted concrete and specially created artificial rocks. A detail the designer wanted to see in this project was a random edge on the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete areas. Our crews, after pouring and stamping a section of Bomanite would pull off the form and cut back the concrete to match the pattern line of the Small Random Slate pattern.

Results:
The jagged edge between the Bomanite and Sandscape Texture was just the look that was desired. The pool coping was also formed and stamped with a meandering front edge to give the look of an old waterhole. All the Bomanite was stained with Seal Brown Patène Artectura® which added to the old, weathered look the designer was trying to achieve. A Bomanite patio and picnic area were also installed to match the pool deck.

Gendy Street @ Fort Worth Western Heritage Center

Texas Bomanite was brought in at the later stages of the project at which time color and pattern had not been selected. This project had a drop dead date for completion to coincide with the dedication of the “national cowgirl museum”. Working with the designer, the representatives of the Western Heritage Association and a Landscape Architect in Washington D.C., Texas Bomanite prepared 15 samples for approval.

Job site mockups were produced and then tweaked for final color and pattern. Texas Bomanite crews started construction on the circlular sidewalk located at the perimeter of the traffic circle. A custom curb mule was fabricated to specifications provided by the Western Heritage Association.

Carter & Burgess, Inc. provided an autocad drawing of the intersection so that Texas Bomanite could design and layout the construction joint pattern. Texas Bomanite suggested a design change for the lane divider header in order to transfer the loads (traffic). Once the curb and gutter and traffic lane dividers were installed the field paving started. Work phases started in April and final pours were made in May. This project was on a very tight schedule and was a very high profile for the city.
