Musselman and Hall Revitalizes Riverfront in Omaha

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Revealed decorative concrete on existing stairs and walls in Omaha, NE.The Omaha RiverFront Revitalization Project aims to rejuvenate a 72-acre urban parkland area along the Missouri River.  This initiative involved the transformation of three previously underused parks, namely Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland of America, and Lewis and Clark Landing, into new attractions for the local and regional community.  By enhancing accessibility to the river and creating inviting outdoor spaces, the RiverFront Revitalization project will strengthen connections within the city.  These three parks will not only offer improved access to downtown Omaha but also promote environmental sustainability and support economic growth.

Colorado Hardscapes Executes Expert Installation of Bomanite Sandscape Refined

Republic Plaza in downtown Denver, Colorado features a stunning installation of Bomanite Sandscape Refined cast-in-place benches and planter walls by Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes.Located in the vibrant heart of the central business district between 16th and 17th Streets in downtown Denver, Republic Plaza is a 56-story iconic high-rise building.  Built in 1984, Republic Plaza includes 1.2 million SF of office space and three retail levels and rising 717 feet currently holds the title of tallest building in the entire Rocky Mountain region.

Republic Plaza recently underwent renovations to the main lobby, lower-level concourse, and exterior plaza that leads to the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall.  Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes was selected to create decorative concrete elements in the exterior plaza area.  Originally, the plans called for precast benches and planter walls.  Colorado Hardscapes asked general contractor The Weitz Company if they would consider a cast-in-place option instead.  After looking at the numbers, Weitz was interested in seeing other cast-in-place benches installed by Colorado Hardscapes and following their portfolio review, approved moving forward with a mock-up of cast-in-place benches utilizing Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and featuring Bomanite Sandscape Refined.

Bomanite Sandscape Refined Showcases Product Consistency

Republic Plaza in downtown Denver, Colorado features a stunning installation of Bomanite Sandscape Refined cast-in-place benches and planter walls by Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes. One of the most difficult aspects of this project was the shape of the wall.  Not only did it include a reverse batter, 2” bull nose, and channel for lighting, but it was also on a curve.  Colorado Hardscapes knew that a mock-up was the best option for this project to establish expectations and to address any issues they might encounter.  By utilizing custom CNC contoured foam, they were able to cast the desired shape at their design center.  Colorado Hardscapes typically uses this method for their water feature basins, but it also worked out perfectly for the specialty benches.

Once everyone approved the mock-up, the Colorado Hardscapes crew started on site.  In total, they installed 156 linear feet of Sandscape Refined curved benches and 189 linear feet of Sandscape Refined planter walls with a more conventional shape.  The biggest challenges of this project were the difficult access and hot summer temperatures.  Working right off 16th street, they were limited to only using Tremont Street for access in addition to the complications of downtown in general.  This required them to place the benches in smaller loads.  Despite placing multiple batches, the Sandscape Refined showcases a consistent finish and color from one side of a pour joint to the next.

Jeffco Concrete Crafted Pelham High School Flooring

Jeffco Concrete created Bomanite Micro-Top decorative concrete logo flooring at Pelham High School in Pelham, AL.Pelham, AL, a suburb of Birmingham, with a population of over 24,000, home to 11,584-acre Oak Mountain State Park, and with lots of city parks, has a small-town suburban rural mix feel.  The public schools are highly rated because education isn’t just community-focused, it’s community-inspired.  The Pelham City Board of Education chose Bradford Building Company as the main contractor for an interior renovations project, valued at just over a million dollars, of Pelham High School.   Of all the buildings on all the campuses Pelham City BOE oversees, the Pelham High School gymnasium is the oldest, built in 1973.  The gymnasium lobby is the section that has the most visitors of all the buildings on all the campuses.  Thus, making that flooring spectacular, to put the best foot forward, was a priority.

Picked as project designer, Lathan Associates Architects PC worked with Bomanite licensee Jeffco Concrete Contractors to create decorative concrete flooring that also incorporated a logo for the school.  It’s all about the P – the school’s name: Pelham HS; the school mascot: Panthers; the name of the mascot: Paws.  Bomanite Toppings Systems using Bomanite Micro-Top® was selected specifically because of the logo specification.

Bomanite Micro-Top® Tackles Tough Projects

Jeffco Concrete created Bomanite Micro-Top decorative concrete logo flooring at Pelham High School in Pelham, AL.Jeffco Concrete Contractor mechanically ground the gymnasium lobby floor to remove existing epoxy.  The floor then received 2-coats of White Micro-Top® Base and 1-coat of Finish in two separate colors.  Colors were color matched to represent the school complimentary colors.  The floor was then sealed with a urethan floor sealer.  The resulting floor has a distinctive shine, a beautiful school logo, and sweeping elements of coloration design.

Micro-Top® by Bomanite, a revolutionary cutting-edge technology that employs an ultra-thin layer of concrete to deliver a one-of-a-kind coloring system.  This advanced approach involves applying a cementitious topping with remarkable adhesion capabilities to virtually any surface, including concrete, wood, metal, plastic, or asphalt.  Unlike conventional chemical stains that are limited by standard color palettes, Micro-Top® surpasses expectations where other coloring methods fall short.  What sets Bomanite Micro-Top® apart is its versatility in covering diverse surfaces with an extensive spectrum of colors and graphics possibilities, all while offering a cost-effective alternative to labor-intensive formwork and intricate design processes.

Musselman and Hall Creates Transformational Hardscape with Bomanite Sandscape Texture

Bomanite Sandscape Texture provides Rolla residents with a distinct decorative concrete median as part of their realignment of University Drive. One of the key projects of the Move Rolla Transportation Development District included the realignment of University Drive.  Rolla, Missouri residents have consistently rated transportation, specifically congestion relief, as the top focus of City efforts over the last 18 years.  This realignment addressed their long-time concerns by realigning University Drive to a new arrival district area for Phelps Health and Missouri S&T.  Providing this multimodal transportation network for Rolla’s primary transportation routes was imperative to improve mobility and safety, to connect major activity centers, maximize economic development opportunities, and to provide aesthetic improvements that create a sense of place for Rolla residents.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture Provides Durable and Decorative Detail

Bomanite Sandscape Texture provides Rolla residents with a distinct decorative concrete median as part of their realignment of University Drive.

Included in this project was the construction of a large roundabout with 15,000 SF of decorative median islands.  The addition of the roundabout helps to ease traffic by diverting vehicles away from the City’s other two interstate exits and creates a new front door to the Missouri S&T campus.  Bomanite Licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors was enlisted to install the decorative concrete median islands and utilized Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems for their installation.  Bomanite Sandscape Texture was installed with Bomanite Brownstone Integral Color and Bomanite Color Hardener in Rattan.

Bomanite Sandscape Texture provides Rolla residents with a distinct decorative concrete median as part of their realignment of University Drive.

Musselman & Hall placed the integrally colored concrete paving and then broadcast the color hardener.  They created a custom 15-inch hexagon template that was used to sandblast the color hardener from the surface.  This was done in a very specific pattern that was illustrated by the design team to achieve a two-tone design, further emphasizing the pattern, and highlighting the distinct textural detail.  Because of the complexity of design, this process required extreme attention to detail and the sandblasting process alone took two weeks to complete.

The Musselman & Hall team brings a unique approach to concrete installation, making them the perfect partner for this truly unique project.  With an extremely high level of detail, this installation required diligent and meticulous workmanship.  Sandblasting the linear hexagon pattern around the oblong roundabout island was a huge challenge as each hexagon had to be exact for the design to meet up all the way around and not show misalignment at any point.

The very small project site made the onsite work even more challenging, requiring the work to be completed while the adjacent space was open to pedestrians.  The formwork was quite complex, and the trough needed to be 100% level to allow for even water flow over the edge.  Epoxy coated rebar was installed throughout the structure.  Integrally colored decorative concrete was used, and the finish was smooth troweled.  The project required a combination of pre-cast and cast-in-place decorative concrete.  The 42 pre-cast trough covers were poured at Heritage Bomanite’s shop using the same integral color, with care being taken of the size specifications so each piece would fit properly into its individual stainless steel mounting brackets.

Carolina Bomanite Installs Bomanite Imprint Systems to Create Custom Decorative Concrete

Carolina Bomanite installed Bomanite Imprint Systems outside of the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery at Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina. The Wilson Center for Nature Discovery is located about halfway up Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina and was constructed as part of an $8.37M addition and expansion plan.  This new space doubles the size of the original Nature Museum, offering more than a dozen new state-of-the-art interactive exhibits that help explore the natural history, flora, fauna, geology, and weather of the mountain.  To optimize the natural surroundings at Grandfather Mountain, moveable walls and large banks of windows were incorporated, helping to bring the great outdoors inside.

Bomanite at its Best

In the spring of 2022, Bomanite Licensee Carolina Bomanite Corporation was asked by friend and colleague, Landscape Architect Ron Cutlip, about installing a series of walkways and plaza space for the new addition to this iconic North Carolina tourist destination property.  After a site visit by owners John and Donna Fletcher on a blustery early spring day with winds gusting to 30 mph and the temps below freezing, the decision was made to utilize Carolina Bomanite and its team of skilled craftsmen to perform the design build concrete work.

Carolina Bomanite installed Bomanite Imprint Systems outside of the Wilson Center for Nature Discovery at Grandfather Mountain in Linville, North Carolina. The installation features Bomanite Imprint Systems and showcases the Bomacron Slate Texture pattern with various custom animal print installations including deer, racoon, bear, eagle, and turkey prints.  The selection of Bomanite Imprinting Tools is unsurpassed in the industry with well over 400 distinct patterns and associated textures.  Bomanite molds are developed from natural products such as stone or wood as well as unconventional surfaces like metal, plastic, or whatever your imagination brings to the table.  The animal print installations were coordinated with help from multiple naturalists employed by the Conservancy to ensure realism.  The naturalists, landscape architect, and Carolina Bomanite finishers collaborated to apply the prints based on a realistic situation – for example, was the bear trotting, walking, loping, or galloping – this approach was applied to each animal print installation, guaranteeing technical accuracy, and creating exceptional and extraordinary concrete.

Expertise Executed

Due to a tight timeframe revolving around one of North Carolina’s top summer tourist destination points, work was accelerated with assistance from employees of the Conservancy, including use of their heavy equipment and the equipment operator.  Due to the harsh winter temps and weather, all concrete was placed on a minimum of 6”-8” of coarse aggregate.  Even during the late spring and summer install months, it was not uncommon to see fog, sleet, snow, freezing rain, and bright sunshine all in the same day.  Owens Corning partnered with Carolina Bomanite to proudly donate the Pinkbar+ composite rebar for this project.

Along with the plaza and walkways, Carolina Bomanite also constructed seat walls cast in place with 300-million-year-old hand and machine placed boulders that later were planted with material native to the mountain in their crooks and niches.  Linville stone, a local source material, capped off these natural looking seat walls that are a welcome respite after climbing the mile high swinging bridge located at the top of this 1,400-acre property.

Premier Concrete Construction installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete flooring at 100 Forge in Watertown, MA.

Boylston Properties chose Ayers Saint Gross as the architectural designers and Erland Construction as the main contractor for this project.  Erland contacted Bomanite licensee Premier Concrete Construction, LLC directly based on a good experience on a past project.  Premier Concrete Construction began working right along with the design team and helped get them started on the color selection process.  Premier supplied color samples as well as aggregate samples.

Premier Concrete Construction then cast small samples for initial approval and then proceeded with the mockup phase in separate elevator lobbies to showcase the intricate divide strip layouts.  The 4,330 SF project was completed with a seamless install time in one mobilization, and Premier Concrete Construction was able to deliver the floor to the owner a little ahead of schedule.  It’s a good example of how the Bomanite process and relationship works from start to finish on a project.  The entire process from design to completion was approximately one year.

Bomanite Modena Means Successful Solution

Premier helped facilitate the design team’s choice of Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems and Bomanite Modena for the 100 Forge project. The design details chosen for this project were Dovetail, Iron Ore, and Caviar epoxy colors with natural and mirror aggregates.  Bomanite Modena is an engineered interior cementitious topping, applied to cured concrete, that is blended with selected aggregates and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level and to expose the desired amounts of aggregates.  With the industry’s lowest lifecycle costs, low to zero VOC and minimal maintenance requirements, Bomanite Modena is the optimal choice for renewed surfaces, or, as in this case, new construction.

The primary benefits to Bomanite Modena TG are the range of colors available, the variety and size of decorative aggregates, the excellent durability, and the ability to create a predictable and relatively uniform surface appearance, making it perfect for high traffic public access buildings such as airports, hospitals, government buildings, and schools.  The various Bomanite Modena TG products are engineered to work with a range of aggregates such as granite, glass, mirror, marble, porcelain, etc. typically ranging from 1/8” through 5/8” in size.  Unlike comparable terrazzo flooring, Bomanite Modena TG is designed specifically to be polished with a fine aggregate gradation like that of concrete.  Bomanite Modena TG is integrally colored and may be seeded with additional aggregate.

Although Colorado Hardscapes was not originally called to install the pool deck, plazas, and sidewalks, it made sense for them to perform the work because they already had a presence on site and Hyder, OZ, and Confluence knew the high quality of work that would be performed.  On areas specified as concrete pavers, Colorado Hardscapes asked the team to consider a Bomanite Sandscape finish with narrowly spaced, linear decorative sawcuts, which they quickly approved.

The labyrinth was originally specified to be installed by Colorado Hardscapes because of the intricate staining and outlining sawcuts.  The execution of this project required a lot of effort to ensure the sawcut lines maintained a parallel and symmetrical shape and resulted in an impressive and beautiful final product.
