Connecticut Bomanite Brings Branford Beautiful Roundabout

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.Three towns in Connecticut, Branford, Guilford, and North Branford, experienced major safety issues with a T-shaped design of an intersection of two major highways that straddle the town lines of all three municipalities.  An older Google Map satellite view of the intersection shows the original design but can’t adequately explain the problem.  The arms of the T intersection shown is U.S. 1 which routinely saw speeds of 40-60mph.  The leg of the T intersection is Route 22 which was required to merge onto U.S. 1 from a complete stop at a stop sign.  Naturally there was a predominance of “right-angle crashes”, more commonly known as “T-Bone Collisions”.  When a vehicle traveling 40-60mph T-Bones a vehicle coming from a dead stop, the results are usually devastating.    A secondary issue was peak hour congestion on Route 22 and lengthy times for vehicles to turn.  According to DOT data, 11,600 vehicles a day travel through the routes 1 and 22 intersection.

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.The logical solution to all those problems was a modern 3-legged roundabout to replace the existing T intersection.  For the multi-million-dollar project, CT DOT selected Empire Paving, Inc. as the main contractor and Connecticut Bomanite Systems was chosen to install the islands and the sidewalks.  By installing a modern roundabout, CT DOT realized the purpose of the project which was to improve safety and alleviate peak hour congestion on Route 22.  Increased safety performance was achieved due to the operational characteristics of a roundabout, eliminating the occurrence of right-angle crashes and reducing speeds.  The approach roadways were modified to introduce curvature for the deflection of vehicles to reduce their speed as they approach the roundabout.  Raised splitter islands and a raised center island with a truck apron was installed to channelize traffic and direct vehicles through the new configuration.  Pedestrian improvements, including sidewalks, crosswalks, and splitter island refuge areas were also installed.

Decorative Concrete Helps Solve Safety Issues

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.For this project, Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems using both the Bomacron Ashlar Slate pattern and the Bomacron Herringbone Used Brick pattern for a total of 9,786 square feet of decorative concrete.  To achieve the desired color for the rotary portion of the roundabout, where the Ashlar Slate pattern was installed, Bomanite sand color hardener was used.  Bomanite red brick color hardener was used for the islands and the edging of the sidewalks where the Herringbone Used Brick pattern was installed.  The choice of colors and patterns creates an aesthetically pleasing decorative concrete and uses just enough eye-catching brightly colored detail to aid in the overall architectural design flow of the roundabout.

Bomanite is unsurpassed in the industry for its selection and quality of imprinting tools.  With well over 400 distinct patterns and associated textures Bomanite has a commanding selection of imprinting tools to select from. Bomanite molds are developed from natural products such as stone or wood as well as unconventional surfaces such as metal or plastic or whatever your imagination may bring to the table. Images, logos, borders and highly custom textures are all part of the Bomanite offering.

Award Winning Decorative Concrete

Connecticut Bomanite Systems installed Bomanite Imprint Systems at modern roundabout in Branford, CT.Connecticut Bomanite Systems earned the 2021 Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project Honorable Mention Award for this installation.  The fact that this reengineered intersection has the potential of saving lives and improving the day to day driving conditions for tens of thousands of working commuters cannot be overstated.  For the three Connecticut communities positively impacted by this project, the ease of use of their new modern roundabout is only enhanced and eclipsed by how beautiful it is.

Beyond Concrete Completes Renovation at Recreational Park

Overlooking the newly raised and expanded Bayonne Bridge, two areas of Dennis P. Collins Park in Bayonne, NJ, were transformed using the Bomanite Imprint Systems decorative concrete.  The main contractor for the project, Picerno Giordano Construction, in conjunction with the project designer  CME Associates, selected Bomanite licensee Beyond Concrete to perform the renovations.  Since 1984, Beyond Concrete has made a commitment to creative solutions and artistic decorative concrete craftsmanship.  This project presented many challenges that allowed them to excel at what they do best.

Beyond Concrete installs Bomanite Imprint Systems Circular Cobblestone Pattern at Dennis Collins Park concrete patio areasThe first area, adjacent to the sand volleyball court, is a circular 50-foot diameter decorative concrete patio area directly overlooking the bridge.  The pattern chosen was the Circular Cobblestone Pattern in Shale Gray color with a Cobblestone highlight color.  Surrounding the entire patio is a border of concrete using Light Ash color and a Forest Brown highlight in a Granite Texture pattern.  The completed effect is intriguing and inviting and the patio has seating all around.  It’s the best place in the park for a closeup view of the bridge and can be a mesmerizing experience when the cargo ships make the slow voyage under the bridge.

Design Creates Challenges

Beyond Concrete installs Bomanite Imprint Systems Boardwalk Pattern at Dennis Collins Park concrete patio areas. The second area was extremely challenging because it was designed so that any lines that were not precisely lined up would throw the entire concept out of alignment.  The first challenge was double and triple checking the form work making sure all the form material was laser straight as well as precisely aligned.  This part of the project consisted of a 2,200 sq. ft. circular area utilizing both the Bomanite Boardwalk 11-inch Wide pattern and the Bomanite Boardwalk 6-inch Narrow pattern.  Using concealed control joints created the seamless Boardwalk area eliminating the “ugly” wide material joints that would most likely require high maintenance caulking and eliminate the effect of looking like real wood planks.

Beyond Concrete installs Bomanite Imprint Systems Boardwalk Pattern at Dennis Collins Park concrete patio areas. The second challenge was there is a raised step-up stage area that added to the technical difficulty factor.  For the Bomanite Boardwalk 6-inch Narrow pattern, the colors used were Light Ash with a Forest Brown highlight color.  Colors chosen for the Bomanite Boardwalk 11-inch Wide pattern were Sienna and a Forest Brown highlight color.  The project looked so much like real wood decking that during construction many people were asking where Beyond Concrete purchased the “lumber”.

Dennis Collins Park Now Has Amenities

Design features of Dennis P. Collins Park renovation include a new picnic area along with a cornhole competition area, a sand volleyball court, two baseball fields, several playground areas for the kids, tennis courts, drinking fountains, restrooms, bicycle racks, solar charging stations, and two enclosed state-of-the-art dog parks with agility training equipment and replica fire hydrants.  One dog park is for smaller dogs, the other for larger dogs, and once you and your dog are inside the double gated enclosure, the dogs can be off leash.   Many gym quality exercise stations can be found along a meandering walkway that connects all the focal points of the park.  One of the most welcome amenities is the ample bench seating that can be found throughout the park with the added bonus of a serene, peaceful view of the water and boat traffic.

Dennis Collins Park Has History

The park is named for Dennis P. Collins whose four terms in office made him the longest-serving Mayor in Bayonne city history.  He served 16 years as Mayor and 12 years prior to that on the Bayonne City Council.  In 2007 the United States Congress even named the city’s Main Post Office in his honor.  The park was once the site of Uncle Milty’s Playland, also known as Bergen Point Amusement Park, a popular attraction for local residents and visitors.  The Sirius Dog Park at Dennis P. Collins Park is named in honor of “Sirius,” a Yellow Labrador that died on September 11, 2001, detecting bombs in New York.

Mall Makeover by Architectural Concrete & Design Exceeds Expectations for Over a Decade

Architectural Concrete and Design installs Bomanite Toppings System to renovate Valley Fair Mall’s interior concourse, replacing outdated tile with a stunning stamped overlay.Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah offers over 830,000 square feet of shopping, dining, and entertainment with over 120 retail stores and delicious dining options to explore.  In 2012, Bomanite Licensee Architectural Concrete & Design Inc. undertook a 70,000 square foot concrete makeover within Valley Fair Mall, retrofitting the concourse with a stampable topping system.  This system was to be installed over the existing ceramic tile to save time, money, and eliminate the mess of ripping up the tile.

Family owned and one of the first Bomanite Licensees in the nation, Architectural Concrete & Design has installed a wide variety of hardscapes for commercial, residential, and municipal projects.  This interior mall project was a new venture for Devin Johnson, the company’s Vice President, who collaborated with Bomanite’s Technical Services Division to develop the application procedures that would ensure that this Bomanite Toppings System could be placed directly over the existing tile.

Bomanite Systems

Bomanite Thin-Set is a specially formulated polymer-modified topping mix that can be imprinted and will bond to any stable, structurally sound substrate.  It is typically installed at 3/8-inch thick and can be feathered to almost a zero edge.  Bomanite Thin-Set is as an extremely effective alternative to demolishing an existing substrate and can be exposed to traffic quickly, which was a priority for this job as the work performed on the expansive 70,000 plus square-foot concourse could not be completed during normal working hours or block daily access to any store in the mall.

The process selected used aggressive surface preparation followed by a 100% solids epoxy primer broadcasted to rejection with silica sand to create a mechanical bond for the overlay.  After this process, the crew would on the next night apply a scratch coat of Thin-Set II followed by a screeded 3/8-inch thick layer of Thin-Set II, that was then imprinted with one of four Bomanite imprint patterns used throughout the mall.

After this part of the process was complete each morning, the crew would lay down a section of breathable landscape fabric over the affected entrances and rope off everything they had stamped.  The timing had to be precise so that the stamped area had time to dry and could withstand foot traffic.  After large sections of flooring were textured, secondary coloring and sealing were undertaken prior to turning over the fully finished floors to the mall.

Featured throughout the concourse is Bomanite Basketweave Used Brick that was integrally colored with Bomanite Brick Red as well as Bomacron Random Slate in Shale Gray.  To create visual breaks, an 8-inch English Slate Texture border in Sand was created with some areas featuring straight lines while other areas feature a free-flowing design.  To create even more variety, the Bomanite 12-inch Boardwalk pattern with Sonora Tan Color Hardener was used to enhance the mall’s roundabout and accent other selected areas.

Premier Concrete Construction Modernizes Driveway with Bomanite Decorative Concrete

Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Imprint Celtic Braid were installed here to create the decorative concrete driveway for this private residence.Perpetual maintenance of an existing asphalt driveway finally became too much for this homeowner.  The asphalt detracted from the curb appeal of the residence.  The driveway looked old and outdated.  The freezing and snowy Concord, NH, winters meant that maintenance had become a headache and the driveway was not durable.  The homeowner reached out to Bomanite Licensee Premier Concrete Construction LLC for recommendations and guidance.  Premier Concrete Construction recommended Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture, and Bomanite Imprint Systems using Concrete Graphics with a Celtic Braid border and decorative sawcuts.  The homeowner also wanted some “sparkle” in the mix of aggregates, so mirror was used to create that effect.  Premier Concrete Construction worked closely with the homeowner and aided them with their color selection.

Bomanite Systems Mean Choices

Colorado Hardscapes Earns Award for Monarch Casino Bomanite Decorative Concrete Port Cochere Flooring with Radiant Heating System

Preparing for the winters is a must in Black Hawk Colorado. In wanting to make a safe transition area from the outdoor environment to the indoors is what Monarch Casino Resort & Spa was thinking when it came time for their renovation. After 5 years of construction, the Monarch Casino, opened to the public in November 2020. With the build out managed by PCL Construction, the casino doubled its size to provide expanded amenities to their customers including new luxury hotel space, new restaurants and a world class spa and pool facility. To help welcome their guests, the casino also built a new parking garage with an attached high-end Porte Cochere.

First impressions are everything

Monarch Casino Black Hawk Colorado Built a Luxury Port Cochere with Radiant Heat System installed under a Bomanite Decorative Imprinted Concrete Flooring in a Slate Texture with warm color tones provided by Bomanite Licensee Colorado HardscapesWhat better way to welcome people to the luxury casino than to provide a luxury drop off area. Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes was contacted in mid-2018 by PCL Construction to install over 14,000 sq. ft. of decorative concrete in the new Porte Cochere area. Designed by MBA Architecture (One Studio D+A) Bomanite stamped and stained concrete systems were a part of the specification from day one. Working closely with the project’s designer, including providing multiple rounds of concrete sampling and a visit to Colorado Hardscapes’ design center, the architect honed in on two different coordinating colors for the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System and two colors chosen for an added textural finish of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System Sandscape Texture. The mix of colors and textures provided specific visual paths to keep cars in specific lanes and to designate curbs and pedestrian friendly areas.

V cut joints were used throughout all the concrete for the control and decorative joints. A radiant heat system in the concrete keeps the entire area warm and free of snow during the winter months. The Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System adds an additional slip resistant benefit.

Every project has its challenges

Monarch Casino Black Hawk Colorado Built a Luxury Port Cochere with Radiant Heat System installed under a Bomanite Decorative Imprinted Concrete Flooring in a Slate Texture with warm color tones provided by Bomanite Licensee Colorado HardscapesIn this case, the challenge was the snowmelt system. Coordination with the other sub-contractors, specifically the snowmelt subcontractor was a full-time job for the Colorado Hardscapes team. Claiming workspace for decent size daily pours while maintaining slopes and jointing layout took a lot of preplanning and quality control. Pouring 4 different concrete types through the radiant heat system was a forming challenge. In the end with their expertise and craftsmanship Colorado Hardscapes was able to provide a consistent looking concrete installation across the entire area.

Hardscape Satisfaction

After a year of fulfilling the punch list requirements, Colorado Hardscapes was very proud of the final outcome of the Bomanite Decorative Concrete products they installed for the Monarch Casino. The Bomanite Company awarded Colorado Hardscapes the 2020 Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project Silver Award for creating a comfortable environment for customers with timeless architecture that provides highly detailed precise decorative concrete work for the Monarch Casino Resort & Spa.

Musselman & Hall Creates Hardscape with Bomanite Decorative Concrete for T-Mobile Arena Moon Plaza

The Sprint Center, Kansas City’s home for sports, concerts, family shows, collegiate competitions, tournaments and special events has been open since 2007 and recently known as the T-mobile Center after the merge in 2020 with Sprint Corporation.  Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC installed 64,000 square feet of concrete hardscapes during the construction of the arena. A small portion of their work involved The Moon’s Plaza, which you can still see today.

Musselman and Hall created an out of this world landscape for the T-mobile Arena Moon Plaza with Bomanite Imprint Systems and Bomanite Sandscape TextureThe project designer, Chris Doyle, created The Moons as the Percent-for-Art component of the Sprint Arena. In front of the huge glass arena, Mr. Doyle created a plaza with three elliptical gardens, each with a water component. Hanging above each of the gardens is a moon, a circular LED video screen that shows individuals flying across the screen simulating orbiting the arena. Musselman & Hall was brought in by Landscape Architects, BBN Architects to bring the surface to life resembling rock and sand textures. With several samples and discussions on creating the ultimate design, it was decided to go with a combination of the Bomanite Imprint Systems and  Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems.

Musselman and Hall created an out of this world landscape for the T-mobile Arena Moon Plaza with Bomanite Imprint Systems and Bomanite Sandscape TextureProviding the ability to accomplish the right amount of detailed hardscape a custom imprint pattern, La Paz Random Stone, created of random rocks was designed to achieve a natural stone look once stamped. The pattern was then colored with Bomanite Black Color Hardener, a coloring agent that delivers increased durability, wear resistance and fade resistance. Along with the imprinted surface Bomanite Sandscape Texture integrally colored in white created elevated bridges and was  woven throughout the surface to provide contrast, movement and flow to the surroundings.

Musselman and Hall created an out of this world landscape for the T-mobile Arena Moon Plaza with Bomanite Imprint Systems and Bomanite Sandscape TextureThe Bomanite Exposed Aggregate line of products and systems have a built-in long-life span as well as the long standing Bomanite Imprint Systems, both known for their robust durability. Using a combination of imprinted concrete and exposed aggregate creates a cohesive and complementary decorative concrete element to the exterior space and design of the building.

Through many discussions with Mortenson, Colorado Hardscapes became their go-to contractor to help with other parts of the project.  Along with the installation of the exterior hardscape, Colorado Hardscapes was contracted to install decorative saw cuts at two parking garage levels and asked to help remedy two board formed walls that when poured (by others) did not pass Mortenson’s standards.

Colorado Hardscapes used the Bomanite Micro-Top ST system to correct a previous poured board formed wall installation and bring them up to code that now accent the exterior finishes on the building and provide a smooth and sleek appearance.Bomanite Topping Systems Micro-Top ST was selected to be the new finish on the walls. Bomanite Micro-Top ST is a two-part, polymer-modified cementitious coating that has excellent adhesion and weather resistance when applied to correctly prepared and primed surfaces.  Colorado Hardscapes’ crews spent many hours grinding and patching the existing walls to get them smooth enough to apply the Bomanite Micro-Top ST.  The two feature walls now accent the exterior finishes on the building and provide a smooth and sleek appearance.

The Bomanite stamped concrete, Bomanite Sandscape Texture, and Bomanite Micro-Top ST turned out beautiful and earned Colorado Hardscapes the 2020 Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project Silver Award.  Using readily available multiple Bomanite products to provide great solutions for the General Contractor, Architect and client is what makes Colorado Hardscapes an astounding partner for any design project.

Musselman & Hall Contractors Create Custom Stamped Concrete Boardwalk for Branson Missouri Aquarium

The Aquarium at the Boardwalk is one of the latest adventures in Branson, Missouri that focuses on fun for all.  Branson’s developing entertainment complex begins with some features that visitors can expect to enjoy at the Aquarium; more than 250 different animal species, an original 5D submarine adventure to the bottom of the sea, a 24-foot high Kelp Forest climbing structure for kids, stingrays, a beautiful 16-foot view of a coral reef, two mirrored art installations that give the sense of infinite ocean life, lionfish, and more than 7,200 individual sea animals! Visitors will also meet the Aquarium’s characters Aquarius, the wise and helpful Giant Pacific Octopus, and Finn, the adventurous Golden Puffer. Not only will these animals be the first they see on the Boardwalk, Aquarius is represented in numerous ways throughout the experience.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Boardwalk boards that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium. This first phase and 21-month build was designed by PGAV Destinations, a leading master planner and designer with major attractions including theme parks, aquariums, museums, zoos, heritage sites, lodging, and branded destinations. Before stepping inside the aquarium, guests are mesmerized by the exterior of the building— Aquarius, a striking 55-foot tall reflective stainless-steel sculpture of a giant Pacific octopus. The 46,000 square-foot home for saltwater species of all kinds, collectively supports an impressive 400,000 gallons of aquatic life. This grand entrance needed a remarkable outdoor paving plan that would accentuate the sculpture and lead visitors to the main park attraction. PGAV Destinations having worked with Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC previously on the St. Louis Aquarium project, called upon them again for their decorative concrete expertise.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Boardwalk boards that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium.Sam Kroesen, Musselman & Hall Project Manager worked with PGAV Destinations to help develop the best system and products to showcase the architectural specifications for the walkway and entrance to the Aquarium. Reviewing samples and coloring methods to create a realistic looking boardwalk while showcasing the entrance was the goal. The Bomanite Imprint Systems stamped concrete with custom patterns to fit the winding pathway was the material of choice.

Creating a custom unique large hexagon stamp provided dimension and an artisanal element for the field around Aquarius. Leading up to and twisting around the large mirrored octopus was a custom 8’ radiused plank board pattern, creating that beach boardwalk feel. Bomanite Imprint Systems are available in over 400 differing patterns that can resemble real wood, stone or natural textures. Custom stamped concrete patterns are endless and provide the flexibility, strength and durability that other paving materials lack.

Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman and Hall Contractors worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Boardwalk boards that snake around the entrance to the Branson Boardwalk Aquarium.A total of 18,000 square feet of imprinted concrete custom patterns were installed using Bomanite Autumn Brown Integral Color for the boardwalk path and a 1:1 mix of Bomanite Moccasin Integral Color and Bomanite Sand Integral Color for the Hexagon paving. Initially the clients had chosen a Color Hardener sample, with the need to cut costs and stay within budget, Kroesen was instrumental in solving the dilemma by mixing onsite Integral Colors to match the color selected. A final touch of Mirrored glass was hand broadcast into the boardwalk path to provide sparkle and complement Aquarius.

This thematic installation of Bomanite Decorative Concrete offers versatility in design, long-term durability, low-maintenance, weather-resistant features and environmentally friendly attributes earning Musselman & Hall Contractors the GOLD Award for the Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project.
