The project was not without its complexities.  Multiple slopes resulting from the curb layout presented a significant challenge.  Additionally, scheduling conflicts with other trades working simultaneously on-site complicated access and coordination.  Educating the contractor on the specific uses and benefits of the Grasscrete® system was another crucial step.  Despite these hurdles, the Bomanite of Wisconsin creative concrete skilled team remained focused and dedicated.  Detailed planning and proactive communication were key to overcoming these obstacles.  The result was a seamless integration of Grasscrete® into the emergency access design.

Grasscrete® Green and Groundbreaking

Grasscrete®, a Bomanite Pervious Concrete System, offers numerous benefits that make it an ideal choice for such projects.  It is a cast-in-place, monolithic, pervious concrete pavement that is continuously reinforced, providing superior structural integrity.  Grasscrete® serves as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional concrete, offering various landscape solutions while maintaining a sustainable green product design.  It is versatile, suitable for emergency access lanes, delivery routes, overflow parking, and drainage channels that prevent erosion.  Grasscrete® has been a trusted Bomanite Pervious Concrete System for over two decades, performing well in diverse climates across North America.  Its design prevents freeze-thaw and clogging issues, ensuring longevity and reliability.

Tools and Techniques

Bomanite of Wisconsin installed Bomanite Pervious Concrete Systems - Grasscrete at Bellin Health in Green Bay, WI.

The installation of Grasscrete® utilizes two distinct techniques and three types of formers.  The first technique employs a reusable tool to create voids by placing concrete around the tool formers, which are then removed from the slab.  The second technique, used in this project, involves single-use formers, which are placed on the subgrade, covered with concrete, and removed once the concrete hardens.  These single-use formers come in ABS plastic, or a biodegradable version made from post-consumer recycled materials. These innovative techniques allow for a versatile application of Grasscrete®, ensuring it can be adapted to various project requirements and environmental conditions.

Structural Integrity and Sustainability

Musselman &Hall Contractors installed Bomanite Modena SL at Hallmark Corporate Offices in Kansas City, MO.Hallmark, a leader in creative expression, recently embarked on an ambitious project to renovate 17,000 square feet of their corporate office space in Kansas City, MO.  This major refresh was aimed at creating an inviting, modern environment to attract top talent to the office.  The renovation was a collaborative effort with JE Dunn as the main contractor and Burns McDonnell as the project designer, but it was Bomanite Licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC, working directly with Hallmark, who played a critical role in the sample development of the decorative concrete flooring that became the centerpiece of the new design.  The meticulous sample development process highlighted Musselman & Hall’s commitment to excellence and attention to detail.

The coloration and design chosen was Bomanite Modena SL with titanium dioxide and surface seeded Honey Lemon size 01 glass with brass inlay terrazzo strips.  Through trial and error, Musselman & Hall Contractors found with the low loading and size of glass they had to approach their self-leveler installation differently than in previous installations.  Their crew of concrete craftsmen hand broadcast onto the surface after the first spike roll.  A second light handed spike roll was used to seat the glass.  Previous failed attempts showed the aggregate being organized into faint lines by the spike roller when they tried other methods.

Musselman & Hall Masterfully Modernizes Lee’s Summit High School with Bomanite Belcolore

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors.

In Lee’s Summit, MO, Lee’s Summit High School underwent an $80 million dollar renovation.  The 60,000 SF expansion featured a new centralized media center, outdoor learning spaces, and an extensive transformation of the façade as well as the existing classrooms and public spaces.  The total duration of project construction took approximately two years to complete.  JE Dunn was chosen as the main contractor and Multistudio was chosen as the Project Designer.  Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC was selected to execute the architectural vision of decorative concrete which consisted of an expansive installation of Bomanite Belcolore system throughout the public spaces and thoroughfares.  The project also utilized precast stair elements with monolithic tread and riser matching the flooring.  The stakeholders chose Bomanite Charcoal Gray color hardened polished floors and precast treads.  Installing the Belcolore finish on a large scale as well as in the precast treads were both charting in new territory not just for Musselman & Hall, but seemingly anywhere.

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors. The treads were doubly challenging with the monolithic battered riser.  They were poured upside down into the forms by first spraying a ¼” thick coat of concentrated color hardener mixed with water and other admixtures using a hopper gun.  Then back built with a lightweight aggregate concrete mix. The floors were poured as a 3″ thick topping slab.  Musselman & Hall placed a standard floor mix and roughly floated.  Then once the slab had set enough to allow their concrete craftsmen to get on it without sinking, they spread a pound and a half of color hardener per square foot.  When the hardener had soaked through, from the slab moisture, they worked it to a cream with 4-foot pan walk behind power trowels.  Eventually they switched to combo blades to get the final finish desired.  After the slabs were cured out and phasing allowed, they gave the floors a fairly standard paste polish with only minor accommodations made for the color hardened surface.  The project was in numerous phases and stretched from Nov 2021 to July 2023.  Some of the stair treads were cast and stored for over a year before installed.

Bomanite Belcolore Bold Breakthrough in Concrete Coloring

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors. The Bomanite Belcolore system, part of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems, is revolutionizing the way decorative concrete surfaces are finished and maintained in both new constructions and major renovations. This innovative system utilizes Bomanite Color Hardener, which is applied directly onto the surface of freshly placed concrete.  The Color Hardener is evenly distributed over the surface and then expertly troweled, akin to the traditional finishing of concrete.  This method not only ensures a uniform color distribution but also enhances the surface’s durability.  Once the concrete has cured, it undergoes a paste polishing process to achieve the desired gloss level, followed by treatment according to the standard Bomanite VitraFlor System. This approach eliminates the need for topically applied dyes or stains, offering a more robust and long-lasting finish.  The final product is a high-gloss, abrasion-resistant surface that is distinguished for its beauty and durability.

Bomanite Belcolore decorative concrete installed at Lee’s Summit High School, MO, by Musselman & Hall Contractors.

One of the standout features of the Bomanite Belcolore system is its superior abrasion resistance, which makes it ideal for high-traffic areas where longevity is key.  The range of color options available with the Bomanite Color Hardener is significantly broader than those offered by integrally colored concrete, allowing for customization and versatility in design.  This vast variety ensures that each project can achieve a unique aesthetic without sacrificing the structural integrity of the concrete.  Furthermore, the Bomanite Belcolore system is specifically designed for environments undergoing significant transformations, such as new buildings or extensive refurbishments, where a reliable and effective flooring solution is critical.  By integrating the color during the concrete’s initial placement and finishing stages, the system also streamlines the construction process, reducing additional steps and materials typically involved in achieving such high-quality results.

The application of the Bomanite Belcolore system offers numerous advantages for architects and builders looking to incorporate durable, architecturally pleasing decorative concrete surfaces in their projects.  Not only does the system provide a wide array of vibrant, intense color choices, but it also contributes to a more sustainable construction practice by eliminating the need for frequent repairs or replacements.  This method aligns with modern construction standards that prioritize both aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability.  The ease of maintenance and the enduring quality of the finishes ensure that the installations remain attractive and functional for years to come.  As more construction and renovation projects seek innovative solutions that combine form and function, the Bomanite Belcolore system stands out as a leading choice for achieving superior, polished decorative concrete surfaces.

Texas Bomanite Transforms Texas Bankers Association Flooring

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Revealed decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Founded in 1885, the Texas Bankers Association is the first state banking association in the United States.  It is also the largest state-based banking trade organization in the country.  The Association focuses on member-centric policies, professional development, issue advocacy, and premier services.  Representing a diverse group of Texas banks including large and small, state and national, thrift, and community institutions, it is committed to community development. Its members play a crucial role in bolstering local economies and fortifying Texas communities, embodying their motto of “Strong Banks for Stronger Communities.”  To build a new ground-up Headquarters office building in Austin, TX, Texas Bankers Association contracted Beck Group as the main contractor, and utilized Beck Architecture as the project designer.  Texas Bomanite was chosen to realize the architect’s vision in decorative concrete throughout the lobby and the entrance to the building.

From Piece of Tile To Total Project

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.This project was solely designed from a piece of tile that the architect wanted to use in the elevators and bathroom floor and wanted the decorative concrete flooring to match.  Over several months, many design meetings, and samples, Texas Bomanite created a white Bomanite Modena TG floor with #3-#5 Bomanite Blanco Mexicano aggregates.  Bomanite Modena is one of the Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems.  Texas Bomanite included 1/8″ zinc divider strips to break up the floor and tie into the silver finishes throughout the lobby.  The architect also wanted a seamless transition from the outside to the inside and Texas Bomanite added on a white Bomanite Revealed™ front entry with the same aggregates.  Bomanite Revealed™ is one of the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems.  This lobby was the genesis of many projects that showcase a continuous flooring from the inside of the building to the outside of the building created by concrete craftsmen at Texas Bomanite.

Project Presented Complex Challenges

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.

Coordination was required between the structural engineer to place the sub slab control joints with the design intent in mind of the Bomanite Modena TG.  The project had hallways emanating from the central lobby and coordinating the pours so that the crew wouldn’t be trapped off of one end of the lobby also took some coordination. The service elevator and pedestrian elevators were all surrounded by Bomanite Modena TG so coordinating the pour schedule with the needs of continued construction throughout the building posed some painstaking planning.

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Texas Bomanite used all three of its divisions to complete this project.  The polish division performed all interior prep work, installation of zinc strips, and polishing of the Bomanite Modena TG.  The concrete division performed the installation of the Bomanite Modena TG and Bomanite Revealed™ decorative concrete, paying close attention that the large aggregates were tightly floated against all of the zinc strips, and against the exposed, curved concrete walls. The front entrance of the building is on a hill so creating and leveling the front steps and ADA ramp posed to be quite difficult.  The clean and seal division performed the exterior prep work and exposing and sealing of the Bomanite Revealed™.  Challenges also came with the existence of white concrete on a construction site.  Many methods of protection and coordination and collaboration with other trades were required to keep the finish white throughout the remainder of construction.  The zinc strips also posed challenges.  The Bomanite Modena TG had to be polished slowly and with white or neutral tooling to avoid staining the floor.  Texas Bomanite had to use various methods to remove the zinc shavings from the floor as they moved through the process.

Two Bomanite Systems Sustain Design Concept

Texas Bomanite installed Bomanite Modena TG decorative concrete at Texas Bankers Association in Austin, TX.Using two Bomanite Systems to achieve the desired design concepts was necessary in this project.  Bomanite Modena TG is an engineered cementitious topping designed for bonding to cured concrete or prepared wood substrates.  Once set, this topping is ground to reveal internal aggregates and then polished to the desired gloss level, followed by a protective Bomanite stain-resistant seal or coating.  Key benefits include a wide range of colors, diverse aggregate options, superior durability, and a consistent surface appearance.  This makes it ideal for high-traffic areas in public buildings like airports, hospitals, government offices, and schools.  Bomanite Revealed™ is an architectural concrete that showcases decorative aggregates at varying exposure depths, bound within a unique binder on primed concrete.  This system employs preblended binders, light-fast pigments, specialized admixtures, and advanced application techniques to highlight the seeded aggregate.  Unlike typical surface-seeded installations, Bomanite Revealed™ achieves 100% exposure of the aggregate without any native sands marring the appearance.

Musselman & Hall’s Bomanite Sandscape® Sandblasted at Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative sandblasted concrete on Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza.

Since 1973, the Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) has been instrumental in connecting lives across Kansas and western Missouri.  Working as a not-for-profit organ procurement organization (OPO) that is federally certified, MTN collaborates with organ, eye, and tissue donors and their families, along with hospitals and various professional partners.  Their efforts are aimed at extending legacies, offering hope, and saving lives.  Notably, MTN is ranked within the top 10% of OPOs in the United States.  Obviously, these can be very traumatic and stressful times for patients and families.  MTN needed a Memorial Plaza that provides a space for families to honor the donor heroes and the gift of donation.  McCownGordon, the main contractors on the project, and Hoefer Welker, the Project Designer chose Bomanite Licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors to install the decorative concrete plaza.

Project Specs Not Size Dictate Difficulty

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative sandblasted concrete on Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza.

The choice of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems was a perfect project decision.  Though relatively small in size at 740 SF, the project had a number of elements that made it complex.  The project featured Bomanite Sandscape® Texture with concentric, overlapping sandblasted rings to achieve a variance in color and texture.  The memorial plaza includes a sculpture foundation and a small water feature in the center of the plaza.  Along the plaza’s perimeter, five decorative concrete benches are strategically placed to provide a comfortable resting spot for families who spend time here.

Musselman & Hall concrete craftsmen were concerned about achieving the distinct and consistent sandblast rings.  The sandblasting was further complicated by the circular pattern and detailed lines.  Musselman & Hall built custom cut plywood sandblast shields and used sandblast tape where the “infinity rings” overlapped.  The outcome is the creation of a stunning plaza, meticulously designed for the patients and their families.  This space serves as a peaceful retreat, where individuals can relax and find solace amidst their challenges, offering a serene environment that enhances their overall experience.

Enhancing Outdoor Spaces with Bomanite Sandscape® Texture

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative sandblasted concrete on Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza.Bomanite Sandscape® Texture emerges as an innovative solution for outdoor environments, offering a distinctive alternative to traditional concrete finishes.  This advanced concrete solution is crafted through the use of specialized mix designs, additives, topical treatments, and precise application techniques.  It adeptly mimics the appearance of sand-blasted concrete, and it can also integrate specialized colored sands and aggregates larger than 3/8” in diameter.  The appeal of Bomanite Sandscape® Texture lies not only in its aesthetic resemblance to natural textures but also in its cost-effectiveness as a decorative concrete option.  This economical choice yields a monolithic concrete slab that boasts a low life-cycle cost, attributed to the surface’s pre-aged nature, making it a prudent selection for numerous projects.

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative sandblasted concrete on Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza.Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Bomanite Sandscape® Texture is engineered for versatility and longevity, making it the perfect choice for a wide range of applications including plazas, walkways, shopping centers, educational facilities, and more.  The surface’s texture is not only consistent but also durable, offering a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that mitigate the heat island effect.  When paired with various color and staining options, such as Bomanite Con-Color and Bomanite Chemical Stain, it allows for the creation of distinctive and resilient hardscapes.  The advanced technology behind Bomanite Sandscape® Texture caters to both aesthetic preferences and functional requirements, establishing it as an indispensable solution for contemporary outdoor design.

Compassionate Creative Concrete Design

Musselman & Hall installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative sandblasted concrete on Midwest Transplant Memorial Plaza. This plaza is a sanctuary where the legacies of donor heroes are honored, and families find comfort and connection during times of profound loss and reflection.  The intricacies of the project—from the meticulous selection of materials to the careful crafting of sandblast rings—highlight the dedication of Musselman & Hall Contractors to achieving a finish that complements the sacredness of the site.  The result is a space that transcends its physical boundaries, becoming a beacon of hope and healing for the community. It showcases how decorative concrete can be elevated from a mere construction material to an integral part of landscape design that touches human lives.  As the Midwest Transplant Network continues its noble mission, the Memorial Plaza remains a tangible representation of their commitment to connecting lives, extending legacies, and fostering a community of support and remembrance.

Connecticut Bomanite Constructs Country Club Decorative Concrete

Sleepy Hollow Country Club features Bomanite Imprint Systems using Bomanite English Sidewalk Slate pattern on patios and sidewalks.Nestled within the storied landscapes of America, Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor, NY, carries the distinction of being one of the nation’s oldest country clubs.  This prestigious club, steeped in history, faced the delicate challenge of updating its facilities without compromising its venerable heritage.  Connecticut Bomanite Systems rose to the occasion, partnering with Viking Construction and the club to reimagine its patios and sidewalks.  Their mission was to integrate the new with the old harmoniously, ensuring that the fresh concrete work would complement, rather than overshadow, the club’s rich past.  The club chose Bomanite Imprint Systems consisting of a 10,287 SF saw cut into a 4’x4′ pattern of Bomanite English Sidewalk Slate with seal gray CH field and flamed granite with gunmetal gray CH border.  This choice was emblematic of a commitment to preserving the club’s character while embracing modernity and resilience.

Durability is a hallmark of the Bomanite Imprint Systems, a feature that was put to the test during the filming of an episode of “Law and Order” at the club.  The production’s rigorous demands, involving heavy equipment and constant foot traffic, posed no threat to the newly installed pathways and patios.  This resilience is a testament to Bomanite’s innovative approach to decorative concrete design, utilizing molds derived from natural materials like stone and wood, as well as more unconventional elements such as metal and plastic.  This adaptability ensures that each project can be as unique as the client’s imagination, incorporating custom images, logos, and textures to create a truly personalized space.

Architectural Concrete & Design’s Courtyard Creation at Utah State Board of Education

Architectural Concrete & Design installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete at Utah State Board of Education. In July 2022, the Utah State Board of Education, in Salt Lake City, UT, witnessed a remarkable transformation of its courtyard, a project that not only redefined its outdoor space but also set a new standard for design innovation.  Bomanite Licensee Architectural Concrete & Design, a firm renowned for its expertise in architectural decorative concrete, took on the challenge to install a new courtyard with Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture.  This project was unique in its approach, employing two pours of two integral colors – Bomanite Coloration Concentrate “Dark Gray DM” and “Pewter DM” – to create a visually striking and highly functional outdoor area.  The goal was not merely to renovate the existing space but to elevate it into a modern, aesthetically pleasing, and multi-functional courtyard.  Working with an in-house design team, Architectural Concrete & Design envisioned a space that could seamlessly blend with the architectural ethos of the USBE building while introducing an element of contemporary elegance.  The decision to use Bomanite Sandscape® Texture in two contrasting colors was driven by a desire to create a dynamic and engaging environment that could inspire creativity and tranquility.

Two-Phase Pour Precision and Expertise

Architectural Concrete & Design installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete at Utah State Board of Education. The installation process is a testament to Architectural Concrete & Design’s mastery and concrete craftsmanship.  The project was executed in two phases to accommodate the two-color scheme.  Precision was key, as the team of concrete artisans meticulously planned the pours to ensure sharp, clean lines between the colors, achieving a seamless transition that visually expanded the space.  One of the significant challenges faced during the installation was maintaining the integrity of the design amidst the logistical complexities of executing two separate pours, creating an intricate interplay of shades that added depth and dimension to the courtyard.  This project has not only enhanced the aesthetic and functional value of the courtyard but also demonstrated the potential of architectural concrete to bring design visions to life.

Durability Meets Design

Architectural Concrete & Design installed Bomanite Sandscape Texture decorative concrete at Utah State Board of Education. One of the project’s core considerations was selecting a material that could withstand the rigors of Utah’s climate while maintaining its visual integrity.  Bomanite Sandscape® Texture, known for its durability, low maintenance, and the ability to incorporate multiple colors into the design, can withstand the rigors of high foot traffic and provides a non-skid surface.  It was an ideal choice, ensuring that the courtyard would remain a vibrant and inviting space for years to come.  It is now a visually appealing outdoor space and a picturesque setting for photos of smiling award recipients.  Architectural Concrete & Design, through their creative use of Bomanite Sandscape® Texture and meeting design goals, has showcased the transformative power of architectural decorative concrete.  This project stands as a beacon of modern design, inspiring future projects to push the boundaries of creativity and functionality.
