Valley Children’s Hospital

Valley Children’s Healthcare began as the vision of five civic-minded women who saw the need for a dedicated pediatric hospital in Central California. For nearly 70 years, Valley Children’s Healthcare has grown from a 42-bed hospital in 1952 to a 358-bed, nationally respected pediatric healthcare network today with more than 640 physicians and 3,500 staff. Valley Children’s delivers high-quality, comprehensive care to more than 1.3 million children in a 12-county service area and has been recognized four years in a row by U.S. News and World Report as one of the “Best Children’s Hospitals” in the nation for various specialties. Valley Children’s is the first children’s hospital west of the Rockies to receive Magnet Nursing designation, the highest nursing benchmark in the world.

As the Valley Children’s Healthcare network continues to grow and expand they recently implemented their landscaping Master Plan Phase 2 at the Valley Children’s Hospital location in Madera, California to accommodate gatherings, family events and fund raising efforts. Taking advantage of the beautiful California weather for more outdoor events, their south side building landscaping needed improvements for vehicle access for caterers, food trucks as well as emergency, freight and maintenance vehicles.

Working with Heritage Bomanite, the California Central Valley Bomanite Decorative Concrete Contractor, a design was put in place to accommodate the vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Dedicated to providing a top-notch installation for a top-rated children’s hospital was a common goal of all trades during the installation. With a strong presence in the Central Valley, the values of Valley Children’s call for a set of shared standards driven by excellence, compassion, heart, care for all, and integrity.

The Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System exterior concrete hardscape stands up to the test of time with a history in strength, durability and adds multiple design aesthetics to collaborate with plantings, shrubs and structures. Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Revealed were chosen based on a previous specification in place for Valley Children’s smaller satellite hospitals north and south of the central valley location that were also installed by Heritage Bomanite. With its proven performance and keeping within the color theme, 21,082 Square feet of Seal Gray Bomanite Sandscape Texture and 5,899 Square feet of Bomanite Revealed with Light and Dark Blue Glass, Black Granite Aggregate and Bomanite Seal Gray Integral Color were incorporated into a new sidewalk/accessible driveway and patio entrance along with 5,555 square feet of decorative sawcuts delivering necessary control joints with designer appeal.

Heritage Bomanite installed the Pergola Amphitheater with stadium seating that will host many concerts for the children and their families. Over 13,000 square feet of natural gray broom finished concrete can be found in exterior walkways surrounding the amphitheater and the low-maintenance freshly landscaped planter and flower beds by Landscape Development Inc. Working with an event deadline, the newly finished landscape created a perfect background for the 23rd Annual Harvest Ball, a Signature Event of Valley Children’s. This elegant gala has grown to host more than 900 of the community’s most generous philanthropists each year and celebrates the life-saving mission of Valley Children’s.

Used in combination with a variety of color and staining options, Bomanite Sandscape Texture creates consistent texture and durable hardscapes. Natural stone such as granite, quartz or marble along with unique aggregates such as recycled glass or porcelain are common aggregates of choice for Bomanite Revealed installations. The natural non-skid properties and abrasion resistant aggregates make both Bomanite Revealed and Bomanite Sandscape Texture the perfect choice for entries, municipal or public works projects, hospitals, educational facilities, museums, pool decks, plazas and more. The Bomanite Decorative Concrete Exposed Aggregate Systems offer a variety of modernized mixes and an unlimited palette of colors, textures and aggregate options to choose from, providing cost-effective solutions that are more durable than ever and reveal just how brilliant concrete can be while delivering that little bit of sparkle to any festivity.

Jose Campos, Field Engineer for Quiring General, the GC for this project had this to say about Heritage Bomanite’s workmanship “On behalf of Quiring General, we would like to thank Heritage Bomanite for their outstanding contribution to the Valley Children’s Healthcare Landscape Master Plan Phase II project in Madera, CA. We appreciate your team’s persistence, commitment, and focus to help deliver a high-quality project on schedule and within the client’s budget.”

Heritage Bomanite exemplified Valley Children’s values of excellence and integrity earning them the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project Over 6,000 Sq. ft Silver Award. With their outstanding workmanship they have been asked to continue with Phase III of the Valley Children’s Healthcare Landscape Master Plan, providing additional beautiful Bomanite Decorative Concrete.

Banc of California LAFC Stadium

Exposition Park is a collection of world-class museums, educational and sport facilities and entertainment venues. It is more than just an urban park with outdoor recreational activities. Within the 160-acre campus, you can experience the fun of science, math and technology at the California Science Center, learn about the diverse cultural experience at the California African American Museum or explore natural and cultural worlds at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, or simply relax in the splendor of the City of Los Angeles Rose Garden.

The landmark Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum offers the excitement of world-class competition, and the Los Angeles Football Club Banc of California Stadium is the newest addition to the community that is all ready to host the 2028 Olympics.  Bomel Construction Company, Bomanite Licensee, was brought in by PCL Construction Services to install the fine details of the hardscape project list of the well-known prominent designer in the community, Studio-MLA. The building interior and exterior of the Banc of California had to stand up to its reputable counterparts.  Studio-MLA developed the exterior site design concept to blend into and complement the existing venues landscaping as well as provide a highly visual and intuitive fan experience. Working closely with the team owners, design team, and the surrounding communities, Bomel Construction Company helped Studio-MLA transform the 16-acre site into an iconic facility for world class sporting and entertainment events.

A series of entry plazas, pedestrian walkways, seat walls and stairs, over 150,000 square feet of hardscape, were planned to cultivate the fan arrival experience and contribute to the visual identity of the Stadium for the surrounding community. Studio-MLA’s design drew inspiration from the LAFC brand. The Northwest corner of the site stands out with a small platform – called the “flight wall” – wrapped in a unique texture that bridges old and new inspirations. Bomel Construction Company constructed the cast-in-place concrete wall with a “Fishscale” custom form-liner done with a gray Integral Color to achieve the statement art-inspired piece. This location being most proximate to the Coliseum is key as an entrance to the building as well as a focal point for park visitors.

The Northwest Plaza entrance is designed to serve as an extension of the stadium, offering needed space for fans filtering through entrances while also providing an outdoor eating venue complete with an exterior wood deck for “The Fields LA”; a L.A. based curated food experience. Imbeds of Bomanite Stamped Concrete using the Bomacron 11.5” Boardwalk pattern in a contrasting gray color connects the two spaces as a short walkway and leads the fans from the deck seating to the entrance of the restaurant.

Studio-MLA expanded the hardscape design above ground. A publicly accessible rooftop terrace and garden over The Fields LA contains a large flexible event space that extends the Stadium Club Level lobby interior space to the outdoors. Fans can take advantage of the panoramic views over Expo Park. The terrace has been designed with a geometrical arrangement of pedestal pavers that are accentuated by a series of large trees set amid lineal planters adrift in crushed stone. Bomel Construction Company installed the gray Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture finish to the lineal planters as well as the circular tree planters. The flexibility of both game day and non-game activities provide year-round engagement for the whole community.

The pedestrian entrances and walkways, throughout and around the LAFC Stadium predominately used the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture System, allowing for low maintenance and a light buff color for solar reflectance benefit. Bands of the Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate System were incorporated smartly in gray with Clear Glass Aggregate and Mirror Flakes that sparkle and catch visitor’s attention serving as line formations directing fans to the stadium entrances. Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Alloy are both suited exceptionally well for exterior applications— anywhere that improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary. Bomanite Decorative Concrete perfect for those 22,000 fans emerging in and out of a world class stadium.

AWARDS: 2018 Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project – Gold Award

DELO – Downtown East Louisville

As the owner, RMCS, planned a new development just to the east of historic downtown Louisville, Colorado, he secured the services of PCS Group who in turned designed walls, plazas, sidewalks and streets with distinctive concrete paving. PCS worked closely with Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes to develop the color scheme, texture and finish of each area to be its own unique look, but as an overall development to be outstanding. The seat walls, planter walls and concrete columns received a custom Bomanite Sandscape Refined Exposed Aggregate finish using Cappuccino Color Hardener with flecks of mirror glass and blue glass. The wall sparkle as you walk by reflecting the sun’s light.

Plazas were poured with San Diego Buff Integral Color and uncolored concrete, with the majority of the areas having a Bomanite Sandscape Textured Exposed Aggregate finish, but some accent areas using a broom finish to really set off the textural differences in the concrete. The main drive through the development included black sand added to the San Diego Buff concrete mix to again achieve a unique look yet tying it together with the plazas. Seeded glass and rock was used as accent bands and crosswalks.

Integrating trench drains, truncate domes and tree grates, along with thousands of feet of sawcut joints resulted in an outstanding streetscape that sets DELO apart from many other municipal developments.

Lenexa Civic Center

Lenexa City has developed and opened a 300,000 plus-square-foot mixed-use campus, that includes a new City Hall, Park University, a Public Market, and a community Rec Center along with public gathering spaces. Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, had the opportunity to work with PGAV Architects and Plaid Collaborative on the design of the pedestrian plaza as part of the Civic Center.

PLAID collaborated worked with the City and PGAV to design outdoor spaces to express as they noted a “prairie deconstructed theme, which embodies the spirit and character of the native prairie (landform, geology, and vegetation) and the history of Lenexa in a contemporary, sustainable, and sophisticated motif.” The three primary outdoor spaces created were the Festival Plaza (a large plaza for public gatherings and celebrations), the Vista (a space for activities that support the adjacent community recreation center and farmers market), and the Strata (a collection of intimate spaces for City Hall and public market patrons). The idea was for each space to have different uses, different scale and configuration but a common pallet of materials, furnishings, and details were woven through the design to complement the building architecture, provide visual continuity, and reinforce an overall sense of place.

Lenexa Civic Center Festival Plaza incorporates Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System with Bomanite Con-Color Staining Techniques. The Festival plaza incorporated 13,000 square feet of the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System and then was stained with pops of vibrant and subtle colors of Bomanite Con-Color that were cohesive with the overall design. The detailed stain pattern created unique challenges and used four colors: Travertine Beige, Franciscan Red, French Gray, and Gunmetal Gray. Once the color was in place the plaza was sealed with Bomaseal C-18 to help withstand the outside elements of weather and human traffic.

Lenexa Civic Center outdoor spaces were designed with Bomanite Alloy to add a sparkle to the history nodeThe center piece of the project was the 700 square feet History Node. The Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate System in Natural Gray was chosen for this portion of the plaza, installed, and then engraved with 23 significant names, dates, and events unique to the history of Lenexa. The text was of varying scale from 4” to 9” tall. Layout and execution was critical, and accuracy was of the utmost importance.

The project conception was citizen-led and has helped Lenexa visualize their dream of starting a new downtown. This is a beautiful project and exhibits the potential and beauty of quality Bomanite Decorative Concrete.

South Congress Hotel

Nestled in the heart of trendy SoCo (South Congress Avenue) in Austin, is the South Congress Hotel designed by the Austin architecture firm of Dick Clark + Associates. Bomanite Licensee, Texas Bomanite, joined the process in April 2013 by pricing the exterior architectural concrete working with the Houston office of Manhattan Construction from April to November to revise estimates as the project became more defined. They were awarded the work in November 2013 and the project was completed in late 2015.

Situated on nearly an acre of land, the building spans over 82,000 square feet and includes a hotel, restaurants and retail space. Texas Bomanite’s role in the project included integral color concrete with Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture and Sandblast paving finishes as well as board-formed concrete planter walls and water features incorporated into walkways, courtyards and outside dining venues.

The South Congress hotel was included in the “It List 2016: The Best New Hotels on the Planet,” by Travel + Leisure Magazine!

The Hilton Anatole Hotel Jade Waters Pool Complex

The Hilton Anatole Hotel is a landmark that spans 45 lush acres in the Dallas Design District just north of downtown. The hotel was constructed in 1979. The hotel has over 1600 guest rooms, ballrooms, five dining venues, a spa and health club, outdoor pool and 7-acre private Sculpture Garden. The hotel is host to many events, conferences, and conventions.

In 2015, Hilton broke ground on Jade Waters, a $20 million seasonal resort pool complex, utilizing 4 of the 7 acres of garden space. Jade Waters features a lazy river, two 180’ water slides, a children’s area and activity pool, leisure pool, swim-up bar and full-service restaurant. Cabanas and day beds are available in addition to the ample lounge seating. Jade Waters is exclusively for the use of hotel guests and health club members.

General Contractors, T&G Constructors, contacted Texas Bomanite in the Design Development phase of the project to work with Landscape Architecture firm TBG’s design team to provide finish options and budgeting to T&G Constructors. The hardscape portion of the project contains 60,000 square feet. Sample Boards of concrete finishes were provided to TBG prior to full-size mockups being constructed on-site. Two finishes from the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems and three different colors were selected by TBG and Hilton from the jobsite mockups. The finishes were Bomanite Sandscape and Bomanite Sandscape Refined systems. The Bomanite Refined finish was also combined with a Bomanite Custom Imprint System to create a unique finish for the area of the project bounded by the Lazy River and referred to as the “Big Island”. This finish was also installed at the “Beach Entry” of the activity pool. The Imprint System combined with the Bomanite Sandscape finish simulates shifting sands on a beach.

Following approval of the mockups, the construction phase began. Due to unusually wet weather and soil conditions, the project had fallen behind schedule. T&G Constructors required an accelerated schedule to maintain the July opening date for the waterpark. This required crews to work six and seven day workweeks as well as holidays for several weeks. The congested site and wet soils presented another obstacle and required daily meetings with T&G Constructors Superintendents and their subcontractors for coordination of work areas as well as laydown areas. Recycled concrete fines was used in place of cushion sand to provide a better base on which to set forms and pour the concrete. Recycled concrete was also used to provide haul routes to get materials and equipment in and out of the site. The waterpark and garden opened in July of 2016 as scheduled.

Veterans Walk of Honor Memorial

The Veterans Administration (VA) Central California Health Care System originally hired Heritage Bomanite to place plain gray concrete with a broom finish for their Walk of Honor Memorial project. Heritage Bomanite worked with the VA and TETER Architects & Engineers Company and had them visit their architectural design showroom. Many samples were reviewed and they were so impressed with the quality, durability, look and feel that they decided to upgrade to the Bomanite Sandscape Texture System.

The walk is a landscaped area that leads visitors to the center’s Wall of Honor. The integrally colored concrete and Sandscape finish path has a hand cut pattern in dark and light grey colors. Heritage Bomanite installed the red granite stars along with the decorative concrete finish. The walls are locally quarried Black Granite with more than 1,100 Veterans names engraved.

TETER was so moved by the project that their staff gathered donations that made it possible for the VA to purchase a Battlefield Cross bronze statue for the Walk of Honor. TETER’s Jonathan Schlundt who served as Project Manager on the memorial stated, “The entire process was inspirational in many ways—from the participation of staff creating a plethora of designs, the involvement and advice from community activists alongside the VA, and the commitment of local contractors; but the best part was seeing what the project meant to the Veteran’s and their loved ones on opening day.”

The VA stated that the Walk of Honor was a significant undertaking that will enhance the physical, spiritual and mental healing of Veterans, families and visitors. Each November following Veterans Day, the VA will host a dedication ceremony to add names of Veterans to the memorial.

Garmin Expansion Pedestrian Plaza

Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors (M&H) worked with local architecture firm Gould Evans during the design development phase of the Garmin Expansion project. M&H assisted with the project specifications and samples. The design team and owner’s representatives visited the M&H architectural concrete showroom multiple times to discuss project particulars and review samples until the team was able to fine tune the project finishes.

Musselman & Hall placed 40,800 SF pedestrian plaza as part of a building expansion project at the Garmin headquarters in Olathe, KS. Nearly 25,800 SF of the plaza was done utilizing the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Finish, Multiple planter beds, cast-in-place Sandscape finished concrete benches, a continuous 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, and the detailed stain pattern created unique challenges to this project.

The entire plaza was saw cut and v grooved, or bevel cut, on a 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, joint layout was extremely critical. The jointing was continuous throughout the 700’ long plaza. Any variance in joint layout would be obvious and would not be acceptable.

M&H used Bomanite Con-Color to stain the Sandscape Texture portion of the plaza. The stain pattern incorporated three Bomanite Con-Colors; Cobblestone Gray, Nickel Gray, and Natural Gray. The stained Sandscape was then sealed with BomaSeal C-18.

This is a beautiful project and exhibits the potential and beauty of quality architectural concrete. This project won the Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project.

Northside Christian Church (SRA)

The Northside Church decided to reinvent their stretch of lawn as a dynamic new multi-purpose plaza, the primary goal was to create something special, whether it be for celebrating the birth of a child, affirming one’s faith or for friends and family gatherings and church events welcoming one and all. The church’s goal was to provide a place for people to connect – to their faith and to one another.

The church saw several different decorative concrete projects, reviewed several hard samples to select the final material. The final scope of work included 41,000 square feet of exposed decorative concrete flat work, 650 lineal feet of walls, and some 4,000 square feet of the Bomanite Custom Polished Concrete Patène Teres System in The Frappe House. Northside Christian Church ended up selecting a combination of the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems; Sandscape Refined Antico finish in Bomanite Light Brown, and Bomanite Sandscape Texture in three colors to get the cohesive yet varied look they wanted in order to connect the exterior spaces.

To expand the range of interest and energize the plaza during daily use, The Frappe House, the new handcrafted coffee shop was built animating the baptismal pool and amphitheater seating. In all, the plaza design objectives were to connect the church’s primary entrance, the youth ministry center next door and the coffee shop while also servicing individual and group baptismal celebrations in a harmonious space. The design blends a lot of forms and walls, rock work and fire pits, along with both integrated and movable seating choices. Roll up garage doors and rough raw materials fill The Frappe House to capture contemporary design sensibilities common to many chain coffee shops.

The challenge was in working to accommodate a diverse program of possible uses and group sizes. Appropriate exterior spaces that accommodate many different groups and purposes also had to be fit into a relatively small area tucked between three structures of independent functions. Creating harmonious connections throughout the plaza while having a modern, socially contemporary design aesthetic led to the use of curvy linear patterns spiraling out from the baptismal pool in the center of the design. Radiating outward, the patterns form seating areas, viewing sections and gathering spaces as the plaza steps up from the baptismal pool toward each building. The use of curves allows the energy of each space to easily be focused on either the main building it serves or conversely toward the center during baptisms. The key to tying it all together was in the primary hardscape choice – Bomanite decorative concrete.

Tandy Family YMCA

The Tandy Family YMCA opened in 2016 with more than 100,000 square feet dedicated to the pursuit of healthy living and community building; this state-of-the-art facility is built on the grounds of the 50-year old Thornton Family YMCA, one of the anchors of midtown Tulsa.

In collaboration with OU Physicians Center for Exercise and Sports Medicine, and OU Physical Therapy, the Tandy Family YMCA features three brand-new pools, new interactive fitness equipment, an all-seasons Splash Park and playground, with a focus on prevention and education.

Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite of Tulsa worked with GH2 Architects to choose the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System  for the exterior multi-use space. With the emphasis on ADA compliance and universal design, both Bomanite Revealed and Bomanite Sandscape Texture were incorporated. Bomanite Revealed was chosen for its ability to provide vibrant color, a Custom glass blend was created to compliment and unify the safety surfaces around the play areas. Bomanite Sandscape Texture in Gobi Desert was installed to provide for a more natural feel, its slip resistant/traction coefficient, appearance and longevity.
