Lake Belton High School Features Bomanite Decorative Concrete Systems

Texas Bomanite installed 243,000 SF of polished concrete flooring, including 9,165 SF of flooring with large aggregate exposure and custom glass aggregates at Lake Belton High School.Lake Belton High School is a 385,000 square-foot campus located in Temple, Texas and includes various community, teaching, and athletic spaces.  Known as the Home of the Broncos, this comprehensive high school was designed to support 2,500 students with key programming that includes science, athletics, performing and fine arts, an auditorium, and a core learning center.  With close coordination between the architect O’Connell Robertson and the contractor Bartlett Cocke General Contractors during the design phase, the client’s goals and budget were achieved.

Texas Bomanite was asked by Bartlett Cocke to provide 243,000 SF of polished concrete flooring, including 9,165 SF of flooring with large aggregate exposure and custom glass aggregates.  In the hallways, the Bomanite Micro-Top Toppings System was utilized to add a distinct decorative feature over the polished concrete flooring.  Additionally, Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate decorative concrete was installed outside the building in the courtyard, near the athletic field, and near the concession stand.

Bomanite Systems in Action

Texas Bomanite utilized the Bomanite VitraFlor Custom Polishing System for at Lake Belton HS, which consisted of grinding, chemical hardening with Bomanite Stabilizer Pro, and honing and polishing with Bomanite VitraFinish.Texas Bomanite utilized the Bomanite VitraFlor Custom Polishing System, which consisted of grinding, chemical hardening with Bomanite Stabilizer Pro, and honing and polishing with Bomanite VitraFinish.  Custom glass aggregates in the colors Cranberry & Red Chunk were incorporated into the flooring, reflecting the school colors, and adding a stunning point of interest.

The VitraFlor process utilizes select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to standards required for decorative polished concrete flooring.  The concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist.  The primary benefit to Bomanite VitraFlor is the simplicity of installation and durability of the finished floor, lending to its low-maintenance and long-term sustainable features.

 

 

In the hallways at Lake Belton High School the Bomanite Micro-Top Toppings System was utilized to add a distinct decorative feature over the polished concrete flooring.To further embody school spirit, 22 horseshoe logos were installed over the polished floor using the Bomanite Micro-Top Toppings System.  Bomanite Micro-Top is a cutting-edge technology that uses a paper-thin concrete medium and provides a coloration system like no other.  Utilizing a troweled-on cementitious topping that tenaciously bonds to virtually any substrate, including concrete, wood, metal, plastic or asphalt, Micro-Top succeeds where other coloring methods have failed.  Micro-Top provides a canvas where works of art are graphically produced, utilizing custom logos, unlimited graphics, swirls of color, or marbleized hues to reach the perfect color combination.

 

Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate decorative concrete was installed outside the Lake Belton High School building in the courtyard, near the athletic field, and near the concession stand.Bomanite Alloy Exposed Aggregate is an architectural exposed concrete with varying exposure depths using non-native quartz and decorative aggregates that are surface seeded on concrete.  Bomanite Alloy is suited for exterior applications – anywhere that improved wear resistance for light- to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary.  Due to the use of Bomanite Color Hardener, Bomanite Alloy is well known as a highly durable surface and is perfect to provide increased surface and slip resistance, making it an ideal product choice for the outdoor installations at Lake Belton High School.

Musselman and Hall Conquers Complex Bomanite Renaissance Design

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.When Rockford School district needed a new school constructed, they specified decorative concrete flooring that was at a reasonable cost but, just as important, durable, and beautiful.  Eureka Elementary, located in Eureka, MO, and part of the school district, was recently built by HOF Construction.  The project designer, Dickinson Hussman, selected Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors to tackle the intricacies of the challenging design.  Challenging projects done within the time allotted, even if shorter than optimum, are a forte for Musselman & Hall and they were a perfect match for this project.

 

 

Complex Design Done by Skilled Bomanite Craftsmen

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.Musselman & Hall used Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Renaissance to complete the 22,500 square foot project.  The project required four colors of Bomanite Renaissance poured in contact with each other in a geometric pattern of bands, then ground and polished as one slab.  They placed 2-inch-thick topping slabs in four different integral colors.  The Bomanite colors used were French Gray, Natural Gray, Sand, and Coquina.  The latter required the use of white cement, which was a challenge of its own, because white cement sets very quickly.

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.The layout of the four colors made it crucial that both the formwork and the placement of topping slabs be installed with absolute precision to achieve sharp construction seams and maintain even aggregate exposure throughout.  The schedule required their crews to begin grinding and polishing in the first areas they placed before they were even completed with the slab installations.  The crews then ground and polished, as one slab, to a satin sheen and full aggregate exposure.

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.Bomanite’s Custom Polishing System, Renaissance by Bomanite, provides a lustrous finish to floors made with Bomanite’s premium Bomanite Integral Color.  Color-saturation, the hallmark of Bomanite’s integrally colored floors, is unsurpassed with this one-time finish. For rich color at a reasonable cost, this is the perfect finish for any newly designed surface.  Other features and benefits of Renaissance by Bomanite are good abrasion resistance, a range of aggregate size is possible with various exposure levels, as well as a natural appearance.

 

Bomanite licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors installed decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Renaissance.The primary benefit of Bomanite Renaissance is the simplicity of installation and durability of color.  With no topical dyes or products needed to achieve color in the floor, the process is much like polishing uncolored concrete.  The Bomanite Renaissance system incorporates Bomanite Integral Color into the decorative concrete prior to placement and finishing of the flooring.  Once cured the concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist.  Renaissance by Bomanite is intended primarily for new construction or major renovation projects.

Veterans Memorial Plaza Honors Men and Women Who Served and Sacrificed

Texas Bomanite installed approximately 3,000 SF of Bomanite Sandscape Refined Antico to create a decorative concrete hardscape that honors veterans across all branches of the military.The City of Carrollton, Texas  is proud to honor our country’s veterans with exhibitions located throughout the city.  The Veterans Memorial Plaza is the newest display and was created to honor veterans across all branches of the military who have served around the world.  Carrollton’s Mayor Kevin Falconer stated, “The purpose of the Veterans Memorial Plaza is to remember and honor those men and women who served and sacrificed in defense of our great nation while we educate future generations about the courage and valor exhibited by these veterans.”

 

Bomanite Sandscape Refined Antico decorative concrete adds stunning detail to Veterans Memorial Plaza with bronze stars that highlight where the major conflicts took place.Featured at the memorial are five illuminated panels that showcase each military branch and a large ground-level concrete map of the world.  The world map design includes bronze stars that highlight where the major conflicts took place with an American flag placed over Washington D.C.  An area of the plaza was raised, allowing visitors to view the memorial from an elevated surface and giving them the opportunity to absorb the history of our nation while remembering and honoring those who have served.

 

Structural Integrity Meets Distinct Design Aesthetic

Featured at the Veterans Memorial Plaza are five illuminated panels that showcase each military branch and a large ground-level concrete map of the world with the American flag placed over Washington D.C. Bomanite Licensee Texas Bomanite was brought into this special project to create the entire ground-level concrete map of the continents, along with the star decorations within the map.  They installed Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape Refined coupled with the Bomanite Antico finishing process to create approximately 3,000 square feet of distinct decorative concrete.

 

 

Bomanite Sandscape Refined Antico decorative concrete was used to create the hardscape surface at the Veterans Memorial Plaza and was placed adjacent to memorial panels highlighting the military branches.Bomanite Sandscape Refined is an architectural exposed concrete with a very fine exposure depth and in this case was paired with the Bomanite Antico process to create a surface with fissures, voids, and other random effects not normally seen with traditional finished concrete.  Sandscape Refined Antico is a unique aesthetically pleasing alternative system that is suited for exterior applications and provides long term durability, low maintenance, and high safety features.

The continents were further distinguished by adding a sandblast finish and the entire map was tinted using Bomanite Buckskin Con-Color to create consistency across the hardscape while adding beautiful coloration that emphasizes the unique textural detail.

This stunning soldier statue sits within a section of the plaza where bricks are laid in dedication to loves ones who have served in the military.Their technical expertise, exceptional planning, communication, and execution resulted in an exceptional project.  Former Carrollton Mayor Ron Branson, a U.S. Air Force and Vietnam War veteran, said the memorial will pay tribute to veterans who did not stand by in the face of danger, but instead volunteered to place themselves in harm’s way for the good of others.  The outstanding installation of Bomanite Sandscape Refined Antico earned Texas Bomanite the 2020 Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project Honorable Mention Award and provided a durable, distinct, and remarkable feature that will honor veterans for years to come.

Bomanite of Tulsa Installs Bomanite Revealed and Alloy to Create Contemporary Concrete Pool Deck Design

This beautiful backyard retreat was created to serve as an outdoor extension to an already stunning home, with contemporary design and distinct detail that enhance the home’s architecture.  Bomanite Licensee Bomanite of Tulsa, Inc. was enlisted to create the pool decking and provide a surface that would visually and functionally complement the pool while also enhancing the home’s exterior and landscaping.

Durable Hardscape Decking with Versatility for Distinct Design

Bomanite decorative concrete is the optimal choice to create swimming pool decking because it provides high durability and versatility for customizing color, pattern, and design style.  The homeowners were originally planning on color and rocksalt but after a visit to the Bomanite of Tulsa showroom they changed their material selection to include Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems with Bomanite Revealed and accents of Bomanite Alloy.

Bomanite Revealed combines the durability of concrete with color and pronounced decorative aggregate and utilizes pre-blended binders, light fast pigments, topical treatments, and advanced application procedures to produce a finished product that showcases the seeded aggregate.  Unlike most surface seeded installations, Bomanite Revealed provides 100% exposure of the decorative aggregate with no native sands detracting from the finished appearance.

After the finishes were selected, Bomanite of Tulsa set to work with the installation.  The pool coping was poured first, followed by the field of Revealed.  Alloy was then used to fill in the bands and the combination of Revealed and Alloy was perfect to provide increased surface and slip resistance.  The exposed decking reduces heat island effect, making the pool deck walkable and not hot to the touch.  The drains were incorporated into the exposed aggregate concrete and feature a concealed slot drain design that was chosen to eliminate the sight of drain grates while providing efficient drainage.

Concrete Arts Proud to Rebuild Target to Help Heal a Community


Bomanite licensee Concrete Arts installed the decorative concrete flooring at the reconstructed Target East Lake in Minneapolis, MN, using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Patene Teres.There are few events in history that can create a rift in the space-time continuum of a community, a veritable paradigm shift that causes ripple effects worldwide.  The death of George Floyd in May of 2020, and subsequent protests and riots, in Minneapolis is just such an event.  Floyd’s death occurred less than a mile from the Target East Lake Street store, which was nearly destroyed, and the Third Precinct Police Station, which was burned to the ground, is directly across the street from that store.  The loss of Target East Lake made it hard for the people in this south Minneapolis neighborhood to buy groceries since there were no other grocery stores within walking distance.

 

How We Rebuild Is More Important

What makes this restoration unique is Target’s commitment to include community input.  “Today, with construction well underway, I recognize that how we rebuild is just as important — if not more so — as when we rebuild. We want the Lake Street community to view this store as a part of itself, not just a place to shop,” Cephas Williams Jr., a group Vice-President at Target, said. “So, we’re listening to the voices of the community and applying what we’re learning and will continue to do so.”  Cephas William’s full statement is titled, To Our Lake Street Minneapolis Community: We’re Listening, Learning, and Re-Opening.  Target’s community outreach was in-depth and extensive.

Partnering With People Who Live Nearby

Bomanite licensee Concrete Arts installed the decorative concrete flooring at the reconstructed Target East Lake in Minneapolis, MN, using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Patene Teres.Target partnered with Nawal Noor, CEO of Noor Companies, a local Black-woman-owned General Contractor and Developer to lead the rebuilding efforts to complete Target’s fastest restoration ever.  Bomanite Licensee Concrete Arts was contracted to be a part of the demolition of the damaged carpet, VCT and corresponding adhesives. The scope of that first stage was completed the last week in June of 2020. Concrete Arts removed approximately 110,000 square feet of flooring in a week running double shifts.  Concrete Arts then left the site to allow for extensive repairs and changes to the concrete. They came back in on August 1st and had five weeks to polish the 90,000 square feet of flooring.  Working 12 hour days, six days a week Concrete Arts finished in 4.5 weeks despite being at the epicenter of the social justice fight which subjected them to three separate shut downs due to further protests.

A Reimagined Store Is Restored.

Bomanite licensee Concrete Arts installed the decorative concrete flooring at the reconstructed Target East Lake in Minneapolis, MN, using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Patene Teres.Concrete Arts installed Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems decorative concrete flooring using Bomanite Patene Teres to complete the redesigned, reimagined, and community inspired reconstructed store.  The new store has a secondary entrance and a well-lit walkway from the rail station to help increase access and to address community voiced safety issues.  The new pharmacy is located closer to the front of the store between both entrances so that elderly shoppers now walk a shorter distance to reach it.  Acknowledging the diverse neighborhood, Target even added a greater variety of spices.  The community asked for more food and more produce, and those sections were almost doubled.  The significant changes to the store culture and the store environment were made to match the community concerns.

Viceroy Santa Monica Hotel Updates and Upgrades with Bomanite Modena

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite.For more than 20 years, the Viceroy Santa Monica has been the area’s mainstay of beach-chic luxury.  It is a place for slow days and fast company.  In 2020 when the Viceroy Hotel Group unveiled plans for a sweeping $21 million interior and exterior renovation of their flagship location, the intent was to usher in a new era in contemporary California cool.  Located along famed Ocean Avenue, the reimagined Viceroy Santa Monica is now more than that because of the Bomanite Modena decorative concrete flooring now enhancing all the common areas on the first level, the deftly curated collection of arts and artifacts, and the ambiance of west coast glam.

Within any interior, besides the ceiling, the floor plane is the largest format of finish that users experience as they pass through a space, so we needed to do something spectacular.”

Something Spectacular is Realized

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite.Bomanite Licensee Heritage Bomanite was chosen to implement that vision.  They installed Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL and terrazzo banding to create the stunningly spectacular decorative concrete flooring.  The hotel’s existing floor was a layered fortress of tongue and groove oak planks glued to a plywood substrate affixed to the slab using concrete nails.  None of that had aged well.  “The original wooden floor was in pretty rough shape,” continues Gonzalez. “We knew the floor was being removed and needed a durable replacement that had no boundary between interior and exterior. A decorative concrete floor laid on top of the existing slab was a cost-effective solution for the owner, but we needed something that would express the design’s artistic qualities using a combination of integral colors and the banding segmentation of a terrazzo.”

Construction Challenge of Operational Hotel

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite.The challenge of renovating Viceroy Santa Monica while the hotel remained operational was awarded to PWI Construction, a nationwide general contractor and construction manager specializing in hospitality, restaurants, and luxury retail.  “Removing the existing floor was a big challenge,” says Alen Meneou, PWI Construction’s superintendent of a demolition process that unexpectedly involved forklifts, bobcats, and jackhammers. “It took nearly a month to remove the floor and prepare the concrete slab to receive the new finish. Because we had so many other subcontractors working in and around the main lobby everything had to be done in sections.”  Definitely a daunting task when you add in the variable of paying guests traversing around the space.

Bomanite licensee Architectural Concrete & Design installed the pool deck area at Icon Apartment Homes at Ferguson Farms in Bozeman, MT, using Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems featuring contrasting bands of Bomanite Sandscape Texture and Bomanite Revealed.Icon Apartment Homes at Ferguson Farm, an exclusive luxury apartment community located in the heart of Bozeman, MT, needed an iconic pool deck area to match its name.  In a very collaborative process with the owner, Black Ridge Companies, the project designer, Norris Design created a memorable design that emulates a starburst and sun rays emanating from it for the area surrounding the pool.  The vision was to create a community outdoor living space for tenants to mix and mingle, to relax, to swim, and to enjoy, with a unique look and feel.

Cerner Corp Innovations Campus – Kansas City, MO

Bomanite Toppings Systems were utilized at the new Cerner campus in Kansas City by Bomanite Licensee Musselman and Hall Contractors, LLC. Their installation of Micro-Top XT® with Nickel Gray Integral Color in a broom finish and Micro-Top ST with French Gray Integral Color created consistency in application and color and mirrored the window and sheathing pattern on the buildings. Heritage Bomanite Fresno CA installed a custom Bomanite Modena SL polished concrete floor with Brass Terrazzo Strips for the High-End Viceroy Hotel Santa Monica CA earning them a Gold Award at the Bomanite Decorative Concrete Annual Awards ProgramHeritage Bomanite, Fresno CA, received the Bomanite Outstanding System Project GRAND AWARD for their innovative work on the Viceroy Hotel, Santa Monica CA. Using our established Bomanite Custom Polishing Modena SL System with unique inlays of Brass Terrazzo Strips defined the hi-end unique designs that are recognizable in all of the Viceroy destinations. The Viceroy Santa Monica renovation project also earned Heritage Bomanite the GOLD AWARD for the Best Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems Project.

Musselman and Hall Kansas City MO installed a Custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern at the Aquarium at the Boardwalk in Branson MO earning them a Gold Award at the Bomanite Decorative Concrete Annual Awards ProgramBomanite Licensee Musselman & Hall Contractors, LLC, Kansas City MO, received two GOLD AWARDS, the first being the Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project GOLD AWARD for the Aquarium at the Boardwalk in Branson MO. Using the Bomanite Imprint Systems Musselman & Hall worked with PGAV Destinations in creating a custom Hexagon Boardwalk pattern with Custom Radius Boardwalk boards that snake around the entrance to the Aquarium. Broadcasted Mirrored glass gives the path an extra sparkle.

Musselman and Hall Kansas City MO installed an alternation pattern of Bomanite Micro-Top XT and Bomanite Micro-Top ST in two different Gray Patterns for the Kansas City Cerner Campus earning them a Gold Award at the Bomanite Decorative Concrete Annual Awards ProgramThe second, Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project GOLD AWARD was earned for Musselman & Hall’s work on the Cerner Campus in Kansas City. Musselman & Hall was called upon to upscale the front entrance concrete. They ultimately decided on an alternating mix of applications of the Bomanite Toppings Systems Micro-Top XT in Nickel Gray with a broom finish and Bomanite Micro-Top ST finish in French Gray that replicates the window and sheathing pattern on the buildings.

Bomanite of Tulsa, Inc. Tulsa OK installed a custom Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System with colors of White, Red, Yellow and Black Aggregates along with the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System in Autumn Brown to identify with the Choctaw Cultural Center’s Heritage earning them a Gold Award at the Bomanite Decorative Concrete Annual Awards ProgramBomanite of Tulsa, Inc. Tulsa OK, received the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project GOLD AWARD for their brilliant work on the Choctaw Cultural Center and Museum. Applications of Bomanite Revealed in white, red, yellow and black and the Bomanite Sandscape Texture system in Autumn Brown, were laid out in a pattern significant to the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Cultural Center welcomes all visitors to explore the rich history, culture, and experiences of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma and its community and now have a rich and beautiful Bomanite Decorative Concrete Interior entry area.

Brothers Marketplace is a family-owned business that has expanded into local communities bringing an innovative approach to food with unique offerings. With five locations and counting, the neighborhood market offers customers a one-stop grocery shopping and dining experience with a carefully curated selection of fresh foods, local and specialty products, delicious prepared meals, and grocery essentials. Recently a new Brothers Marketplace opened in Waltham, MA that showcases a newly finished sustainable polished concrete floor.

Designed by BHDP in collaboration with the owners, Roche Bros. the location for the Waltham Brothers Marketplace was the first to be placed in a residential building. The mixed-use structure features the Brothers Marketplace on the first floor and four floors of apartments sit above, delivering on the brand’s promise “Eat. Drink. Be Local.”

Brothers Marketplace is a family-owned business that has expanded into local communities bringing an innovative approach to food with unique offerings and showcasing a newly finished sustainable floor, Bomanite VitraFlor Polished Concrete, installed by Premier Concrete Construction in Waltham, Ma that complies with Brothers Marketplace overall quality of standards.With the market emphasizing local producers and vendors, reaching out to local Bomanite Licensee, Premier Concrete Construction, was appropriate. Premier Concrete worked with the designer and owners to establish the perfect floor not only to accommodate patrons but equipment as well; shopping carts, hand trucks, utility carts and adjustable shelving. Unlike traditional floor finishes, such as carpet or vinyl tile, polished concrete does not require extensive maintenance procedures such as waxing, burnishing or wet vacuuming, a benefit the owners appreciated.

Brothers Marketplace is a family-owned business that has expanded into local communities bringing an innovative approach to food with unique offerings and showcasing a newly finished sustainable floor, Bomanite VitraFlor Polished Concrete, installed by Premier Concrete Construction in Waltham, Ma that complies with Brothers Marketplace overall quality of standards.The Bomanite Custom Polishing VitraFlor system can be utilized on existing or new uncolored concrete. Bomanite VitraFlor utilizes select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to standards required for decorative polished concrete flooring. The concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist. Samples of differing gloss and aggregate exposures were reviewed. The decision was made to install the Bomanite VitraFlor system with a Class B Fine aggregate exposure, with little or no medium aggregate at random locations known as a salt and pepper finish. The floor was then polished to a Level 3, which typically produces a medium-high sheen level with a 50-60 Gloss reading. The primary benefit to Bomanite VitraFlor is the simplicity of installation and durability of the finished floor, lending to its low-maintenance and long-term sustainable features.
