Bomanite of Tulsa Installs Bomanite Revealed and Alloy to Create Contemporary Concrete Pool Deck Design

This beautiful backyard retreat was created to serve as an outdoor extension to an already stunning home, with contemporary design and distinct detail that enhance the home’s architecture.  Bomanite Licensee Bomanite of Tulsa, Inc. was enlisted to create the pool decking and provide a surface that would visually and functionally complement the pool while also enhancing the home’s exterior and landscaping.

Durable Hardscape Decking with Versatility for Distinct Design

Bomanite decorative concrete is the optimal choice to create swimming pool decking because it provides high durability and versatility for customizing color, pattern, and design style.  The homeowners were originally planning on color and rocksalt but after a visit to the Bomanite of Tulsa showroom they changed their material selection to include Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems with Bomanite Revealed and accents of Bomanite Alloy.

Bomanite Revealed combines the durability of concrete with color and pronounced decorative aggregate and utilizes pre-blended binders, light fast pigments, topical treatments, and advanced application procedures to produce a finished product that showcases the seeded aggregate.  Unlike most surface seeded installations, Bomanite Revealed provides 100% exposure of the decorative aggregate with no native sands detracting from the finished appearance.

Bomanite Alloy is a unique alternative to other decorative concrete finishes and provides an architectural exposed finish with varying exposure depths using non-native quartz and decorative aggregates that are surface seeded on the concrete.

Bomanite Revealed and Bomanite Alloy both provide an architectural finish that is highly suited for exterior applications, including pool decks or anywhere that improved wear resistance for light to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic is required.  Additionally, these highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect, water resistant formulations for wet areas, and other specialty applications that can be personalized to your project.

Installation and Award-Winning Results

After the finishes were selected, Bomanite of Tulsa set to work with the installation.  The pool coping was poured first, followed by the field of Revealed.  Alloy was then used to fill in the bands and the combination of Revealed and Alloy was perfect to provide increased surface and slip resistance.  The exposed decking reduces heat island effect, making the pool deck walkable and not hot to the touch.  The drains were incorporated into the exposed aggregate concrete and feature a concealed slot drain design that was chosen to eliminate the sight of drain grates while providing efficient drainage.

From start to finish this project ran smoothly and resulted in a contemporary decorative concrete pool area that broadens the home’s living space, providing an outdoor retreat for the homeowners and their guests to enjoy.  The installation of Bomanite Revealed and Bomanite Alloy earned Bomanite of Tulsa the 2020 Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Project Honorable Mention Award for their outstanding efforts in creating a durable and distinct hardscape while adding ambiance and enhancing the homeowner’s sophisticated style.

Concrete Arts Proud to Rebuild Target to Help Heal a Community

Bomanite licensee Concrete Arts installed the decorative concrete flooring at the reconstructed Target East Lake in Minneapolis, MN, using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Patene Teres.
There are few events in history that can create a rift in the space-time continuum of a community, a veritable paradigm shift that causes ripple effects worldwide.  The death of George Floyd in May of 2020, and subsequent protests and riots, in Minneapolis is just such an event.  Floyd’s death occurred less than a mile from the Target East Lake Street store, which was nearly destroyed, and the Third Precinct Police Station, which was burned to the ground, is directly across the street from that store.  The loss of Target East Lake made it hard for the people in this south Minneapolis neighborhood to buy groceries since there were no other grocery stores within walking distance.

How We Rebuild Is More Important

What makes this restoration unique is Target’s commitment to include community input.  “Today, with construction well underway, I recognize that how we rebuild is just as important — if not more so — as when we rebuild. We want the Lake Street community to view this store as a part of itself, not just a place to shop,” Cephas Williams Jr., a group Vice-President at Target, said. “So, we’re listening to the voices of the community and applying what we’re learning and will continue to do so.”  Cephas William’s full statement is titled, To Our Lake Street Minneapolis Community: We’re Listening, Learning, and Re-Opening.  Target’s community outreach was in-depth and extensive.

Partnering With People Who Live Nearby

Bomanite licensee Concrete Arts installed the decorative concrete flooring at the reconstructed Target East Lake in Minneapolis, MN, using Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems with Bomanite Patene Teres.Target partnered with Nawal Noor, CEO of Noor Companies, a local Black-woman-owned General Contractor and Developer to lead the rebuilding efforts to complete Target’s fastest restoration ever.  Bomanite Licensee Concrete Arts was contracted to be a part of the demolition of the damaged carpet, VCT and corresponding adhesives. The scope of that first stage was completed the last week in June of 2020. Concrete Arts removed approximately 110,000 square feet of flooring in a week running double shifts.  Concrete Arts then left the site to allow for extensive repairs and changes to the concrete. They came back in on August 1st and had five weeks to polish the 90,000 square feet of flooring.  Working 12 hour days, six days a week Concrete Arts finished in 4.5 weeks despite being at the epicenter of the social justice fight which subjected them to three separate shut downs due to further protests.

A Reimagined Store Is Restored.

Our company feels a great deal of satisfaction in helping this suffering neighborhood try to get back to some sort of normalcy.”

Viceroy Santa Monica Hotel Updates and Upgrades with Bomanite Modena

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite. For more than 20 years, the Viceroy Santa Monica has been the area’s mainstay of beach-chic luxury.  It is a place for slow days and fast company.  In 2020 when the Viceroy Hotel Group unveiled plans for a sweeping $21 million interior and exterior renovation of their flagship location, the intent was to usher in a new era in contemporary California cool.  Located along famed Ocean Avenue, the reimagined Viceroy Santa Monica is now more than that because of the Bomanite Modena decorative concrete flooring now enhancing all the common areas on the first level, the deftly curated collection of arts and artifacts, and the ambiance of west coast glam.

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite.“The design objective at Viceroy Santa Monica was to re-envision a completely new arrival experience, reception, bar, lounge, and poolside into something both breathtaking and quintessential,” says Ramon Gonzalez, project manager for EDG Interior Architecture and Design.  “The bar at the Viceroy is an indoor/outdoor experience, the main feature that anchors the interior to the exterior,” says Gonzalez of the impetus for EDG’s design. “We wanted all of the colors, art, and finish selections to work together in a sophisticated celebration of ocean-side style. Within any interior, besides the ceiling, the floor plane is the largest format of finish that users experience as they pass through a space, so we needed to do something spectacular.”

Something Spectacular is Realized

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite.Bomanite Licensee Heritage Bomanite was chosen to implement that vision.  They installed Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL and terrazzo banding to create the stunningly spectacular decorative concrete flooring.  The hotel’s existing floor was a layered fortress of tongue and groove oak planks glued to a plywood substrate affixed to the slab using concrete nails.  None of that had aged well.  “The original wooden floor was in pretty rough shape,” continues Gonzalez. “We knew the floor was being removed and needed a durable replacement that had no boundary between interior and exterior. A decorative concrete floor laid on top of the existing slab was a cost-effective solution for the owner, but we needed something that would express the design’s artistic qualities using a combination of integral colors and the banding segmentation of a terrazzo.”

Technical Expertise Supports Designers

Construction Challenge of Operational Hotel

Viceroy Santa Monica located in Santa Monica, CA, completes their renovation featuring decorative concrete custom flooring with Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems using Bomanite Modena SL installed by Heritage Bomanite. The challenge of renovating Viceroy Santa Monica while the hotel remained operational was awarded to PWI Construction, a nationwide general contractor and construction manager specializing in hospitality, restaurants, and luxury retail.  “Removing the existing floor was a big challenge,” says Alen Meneou, PWI Construction’s superintendent of a demolition process that unexpectedly involved forklifts, bobcats, and jackhammers. “It took nearly a month to remove the floor and prepare the concrete slab to receive the new finish. Because we had so many other subcontractors working in and around the main lobby everything had to be done in sections.”  Definitely a daunting task when you add in the variable of paying guests traversing around the space.

Colorado Hardscapes Earns Award for Monarch Casino Bomanite Decorative Concrete Port Cochere Flooring with Radiant Heating System

Preparing for the winters is a must in Black Hawk Colorado. In wanting to make a safe transition area from the outdoor environment to the indoors is what Monarch Casino Resort & Spa was thinking when it came time for their renovation. After 5 years of construction, the Monarch Casino, opened to the public in November 2020. With the build out managed by PCL Construction, the casino doubled its size to provide expanded amenities to their customers including new luxury hotel space, new restaurants and a world class spa and pool facility. First impressions are everything

Monarch Casino Black Hawk Colorado Built a Luxury Port Cochere with Radiant Heat System installed under a Bomanite Decorative Imprinted Concrete Flooring in a Slate Texture with warm color tones provided by Bomanite Licensee Colorado HardscapesWhat better way to welcome people to the luxury casino than to provide a luxury drop off area. Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes was contacted in mid-2018 by PCL Construction to install over 14,000 sq. ft. of decorative concrete in the new Porte Cochere area. Designed by MBA Architecture (One Studio D+A) Bomanite stamped and stained concrete systems were a part of the specification from day one. Working closely with the project’s designer, including providing multiple rounds of concrete sampling and a visit to Colorado Hardscapes’ design center, the architect honed in on two different coordinating colors for the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System and two colors chosen for an added textural finish of Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System Sandscape Texture. The mix of colors and textures provided specific visual paths to keep cars in specific lanes and to designate curbs and pedestrian friendly areas.

The selected colors and texture of the Bomacron English Sidewalk Slate were picked to enhance the stone veneer and copper covered columns in the area. V cut joints were used throughout all the concrete for the control and decorative joints. A radiant heat system in the concrete keeps the entire area warm and free of snow during the winter months. The Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System adds an additional slip resistant benefit.

Every project has its challenges

In this case, the challenge was the snowmelt system. Coordination with the other sub-contractors, specifically the snowmelt subcontractor was a full-time job for the Colorado Hardscapes team. Claiming workspace for decent size daily pours while maintaining slopes and jointing layout took a lot of preplanning and quality control. Pouring 4 different concrete types through the radiant heat system was a forming challenge. In the end with their expertise and craftsmanship Colorado Hardscapes was able to provide a consistent looking concrete installation across the entire area.

Hardscape Satisfaction

After a year of fulfilling the punch list requirements, Colorado Hardscapes was very proud of the final outcome of the Bomanite Decorative Concrete products they installed for the Monarch Casino. The Bomanite Company awarded Colorado Hardscapes the 2020 Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project Silver Award for creating a comfortable environment for customers with timeless architecture that provides highly detailed precise decorative concrete work for the Monarch Casino Resort & Spa.

Brownsville International Airport Renovates Passenger Terminal with Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polished Concrete in Nickel Gray installed by Texas Bomanite Licensed ContractorIn developing the buildout of a new passenger terminal Corgan Architects along with Jacobs Engineering developed new design elements and an aesthetic overhaul that reflects the region and culture of Brownsville. Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport was formerly designated as the headquarters of Pan American’s Western Division in the 1930s. The airport made history establishing the first international Airmail Service when Charles Lindbergh landed in Brownsville in 1929 after a historic flight from Mexico City. The city then became a pioneer training center for teaching pilots to fly with navigation instruments only.

The new two-story, 89,000-square-foot building utilizes the latest terminal design features and amenities that include designing and constructing a new four-gate terminal and a Federal Inspection Services (FIS) Facility for commercial and general aviation, replacing the existing facility built-in 1971. Previously restricted to regional aircraft, the project now allows the airport to accommodate larger aircraft and is designed for a future terminal expansion with expected increased air travel.

Brownsville International Airport Renovates Passenger Terminal with Bomanite Modena SL Custom Polished Concrete in Nickel Gray installed by Texas Bomanite Licensed ContractorWhen it came to renovating and revitalizing the airport, Corgan wanted to make sure that the city’s unique history was represented in all design aspects. Corgan worked with Bomanite Licensee, Texas Bomanite, starting in December 2017 on the initial design, several 6” x 6” concrete samples of different gray tones and finishes were a must-have to a make sure the airport flooring would provide as much as an insightful impact as the surrounding structures. Precast stair treads were also created with the Bomanite Modena SL system for a cohesive design. Bomanite Modena SL is a versatile engineered interior polymer modified cementitious topping that is blended with selected aggregates and then ground and polished to the desired gloss level. The new terminal floors were prepped with 24-40 metal bond diamonds and a rapid set epoxy primer with sanding to refusal prior to installing the Bomanite polished concrete system. Polished to a final 800 Grit with Bomanite Stabilizer Poly Pro and Bomanite VitraFinish provided for a solid surface with superior stain resistance. With the design intent, they knew they wanted a polished exposed concrete floor and when the time came in February 2019, the architect reached out to Bomanite Licensee, Premier Concrete Construction, LLC to discuss the possibilities. With little under 5,000 square feet to work with, Premier Concrete met with Caroline K. Hollister, Trustee, President and Treasurer of The Park Theatre and Matt Pelletier of BKA Architects at their Boston Decorative Concrete Showroom. It was at the showroom that the clients learned of the different textures and colors of concrete.

The Bomanite Custom Polishing System Renaissance was the choice for the main lobby entrance flooring, in a dark black color, to provide a background that would make the golden stars pop off the floor. In order to achieve the deep dark color, Premier Concrete created a custom Raven Black Integral Color. Using Bomanite Integral Color provides for uniformity of color throughout the depth of the Concrete while producing durability and longevity of the concrete itself. During the polishing process Black Concrete Dye was added to the top of the colored slab to achieve the deepest darkest color possible.

Once the field of Black concrete was set and polished, forms were removed and a formulation of Bomanite Modena TG, a modern terrazzo like mix, filled the voids. The Bomanite Modena TG Bomanite Custom Polishing System used 3 different colors of yellow glass in 3 differing sizes along with touches of mirror glass to provide the bright golden contrast against the Black backdrop. Once set, each donors name was engraved into the star and displayed with a metallic epoxy for some old-world Hollywood glamour.

Determining the best plan to bring the Park Theatre’s vision to life was critical to the success of the space and intent of design. Premier Concrete’s showroom allowed for the clients to learn more about the possibilities of Bomanite Decorative Concrete. Samples provided the clients with ease of mind and a visual to a stunning end result.

This grand project won Premier Concrete Construction the 2020 Silver Award for the Best Bomanite Custom Polishing System Project. With Premier Concrete’s quality of work and creativity, The Park Theatre now showcases a distinct decorative detail while providing a dynamic regional center for the arts and entertainment as well as an artistic meeting place for the community.
