Robert’s Pavilion Claremont McKenna College

Robert’s Pavilion at the Claremont McKenna College is a three-story events arena with a gymnasium and Olympic swimming pool. Bomanite Licensee, Bomel Construction’s scope was 50,000 square feet of exposed aggregate concrete paving, all perimeter walls, decorative walls, seat walls, and entire pool deck and coping. Working with PCL Construction and the design team from LINK landscape Architecture, the walls were alternating either in hard troweled or sand blasted texture. Two of the most striking pictures features include the 30-step grand staircase and the outdoor seating area Light Sculpture titled “Meet in the Middle” with Bomanite Revealed Exposed Aggregate System in Dark Gray Bomanite Integral Color and seeded with crushed Mirror Glass and Black Silica Carbide.

Meet in the Middle, is a circular arrangement of eight street lamps and 24 benches. The sculpture provides a point of focus and a recognizable meeting place. It was designed by the artist, Chris Burden, and said to be optimistic, welcoming, and provocative, and provides a social setting where students and faculty can interact with the sculpture and each other. The lamps automatically illuminate at sunset and turn off at sunrise and are fitted with LED lights. Burden expressed in earlier comments that these installations were about human relationships to the places we have built for ourselves: the posts and benches represent human scale, and they are more ornate than they need to be—small sculptures that dotted the streets of the past. The Exposed System chosen provides an additional element of reflectiveness, both in physical nature and thought-provoking state. The Robert’s Pavilion is a Recipient of a merit award from the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It is also been deemed a LEED Gold certified facility.

Bomanite Revealed is intended for both new construction and major renovation projects and offers sustainable features such as low life cycle costs due to it’s pre-aged nature of the surface. Bomanite Revealed is suited for exterior applications—anywhere that improved wear resistance for light to moderate-duty vehicular or foot traffic combined with an architectural finish is necessary. Due to the use of the Bomanite Revealed binder, these highly durable surfaces are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including cost effective light-reflective formulations that will not require the use of white cement to reduce heat island effect.

Cerner Corporation Innovations Campus

The Cerner Corporation Innovations Campus located in Kansas City, MO has added two new office towers to their 290-acre campus that will support an additional 3,000 employees. The recent additions represent phases three and four of its 16-phase, $4.5 Billion plan. This giant healthcare IT company is expected to complete construction around 2025. Once complete it is expected to house 16,000 employees, 10 office buildings as well as mix-used space for two data centers, a grocery store and retail space.

After completion of the build, the client was not happy with the way the concrete at the front entrance of the new Cerner Campus Buildings had turned out. The architectural firm for the project, Gould Evans, called upon Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors, Inc. for a consultation and to discuss what they could to do to match the vision and design they were hoping to achieve.

The designers plan for the entrance was to replicate the window and sheathing pattern on the buildings, which was all planned to emulate the data created in the human genome project. After several mock-ups of textures and color options it was decided to go with a mix of Bomanite Micro-Top XT and Bomanite Micro-Top ST application methods.

The Bomanite Toppings Systems is a revolutionary approach to designing with architectural concrete that offers several coloring systems, overlayments and renovation systems that can redesign, restore or refurbish projects. Bomanite Micro-Top XT, part of the Bomanite Toppings Systems, is a two-part, polymer-modified cementitious coating that can be applied over almost any clean, sound exterior surface including concrete, cement block, tile, metal and wood in a wide range of colors and graphics. With its extraordinary adhesion and ability to withstand prolonged pedestrian and vehicular traffic it made perfect sense to choose Bomanite Micro-Top XT to meet the project design needs.

Bomanite Micro-Top ST is a specialized decorative concrete option with the same distinct quality and properties as Bomanite Micro-Top XT and can be applied without affecting surrounding materials or fixtures. In order to achieve the desired outcome for the client, Musselman & Hall applied the Bomanite Micro-Top XT with a broom finish in Bomanite Nickel Gray Integral Color and an alternating complimentary Bomanite Micro-Top ST spray applied finish in Bomanite French Gray Integral Color which provided for color and textural variation.

Cerner Corporation was not only happy with the outcome of the entrance, but it was completed in 2 phases to ensure continued access to the building. The entryway is eye catching and extremely consistent in application and color earning Musselman & Hall the 2020 Best Bomanite Toppings Systems Project – GOLD AWARD for their outstanding decorative concrete craftsmanship.

The Citadel Office Building

Owners of The Citadel office building worked with Bomanite Licensee Colorado Hardscapes and Dig Studio (designer / LA) to provide a solution to an unsightly wall and discolored and deteriorated exterior granite paving. The key – as always – was to stay within the budget. Instead of installing new granite, Bomanite Sandscape Textured concrete was the chosen material used for the patio area. Installing two different colors, uncolored concrete and Sunset Rose Integral color with black silica sand, the patio was poured and then saw cut into “tiles” to replicate the granite.

The wall, rather than being removed and replaced, was covered using the Bomanite Micro-Top ST system. Micro-Top ST can simulate the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Exposed Aggregate System by spray applying the material using different colors to achieve a multi-dimensional texture. The new area surpasses the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding granite.

Bomanite Micro-Top ST has excellent adhesion and weather resistance that is perfect for applying over almost any clean, correctly prepared and primed surface including concrete, cement block, tile, metal and wood. Providing a tough, slip resistant water-retardant coating that substantially reduces water penetration, freeze-thaw scaling and concrete carbonation, Bomanite Micro-Top ST is the most durable and versatile product for spot accent areas, wall coverings, up the side of a building or asphalt street sections going above and beyond the benefits of granite installations.

Villas of Cave Creek

The Villas of Cave Creek owners chose imprinted concrete to blend with the local environment of the Sonoran Desert. With Visitors from around the world, the owners wanted to provide a top notch experience with their stylish villas that are designed to reflect the warmth of the desert, beauty and tranquility of Cave Creek.

All of the granite walkways throughout the property were replaced with the Bomacron Canyon Stone Pattern, proving to be difficult because the area was comprised of 22 villa courtyards with different elevations that required all the grades to be within ADA compliance. An Integral Color along with a flashing of Color Hardener and a tinted Liquid Release were used to provide a realistic stone look. The work was installed at the same time when the property was open to the Villas of Cave Creek guests, which added to the challenge of the project.

Per the General Manager of the villas of Cave Creek “It is very rare to find a contracted crew as organized, friendly and hard working as this team. I received many compliments on how friendly everyone was, always acknowledging our guests and asking how their day was going. I watched many of our guests stand, and in some cases follow, the guys working and asking numerous questions. Your guys always smiled while answering and were very patient with them.” The quality of the work is outstanding as you can see in the face of the ramp turndowns which were stripped faced and stamped with the Bomacron Canyon Stone pattern for continuation of the designed walkways.

Tanger Outlets Fort Worth

The Tanger Outlet Center added a new location to their list of ultimate shopping experiences. The recent open-air outlet mall is located in far North Fort Worth, Texas, just south of the Texas Motor speedway. Working with the architectural firm Adam & Associates, known for their unique combination of world class experience and small town personality, they put together a plan that incorporated the time proven, durable Bomanite Decorative Concrete for the exterior of the outlet walkways.

The Fort Worth mall features 70+ hi-end stores such as top fashion designers Cole Haan, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and Steve Madden along with snack-centered eateries like the Great American Cookie Company that brings shoppers from all over Texas. Over 181 million shoppers a year visit the 39 Tanger Outlets located throughout the U.S. and Canada. Each center has a unique theme to its shopping destination with upscale architectural features and play areas for children. Texas-inspired artwork in the courtyards such as a life-sized steel sculpture of a longhorn and a fire pit were incorporated along with port-style rooftops over many of the stores to protect shoppers from the Texas seasonal weather. Adams & Associates worked with Bomanite Decorative Concrete Craftsmen, Texas Bomanite to choose the system appropriate for the architectural design.

The Bomanite Imprint Systems with stamped, stained and colored concrete with high end finishes accentuating the store fronts and Texas-style artwork featured at many of the pedestrian intersections was the product of choice. Before the project was underway, Texas Bomanite produced 6 different mock-ups to provide a visual for the general contractor, Mycon and the architect to demonstrate exactly what each pattern and color would look like to help aide in the decision-making process.

Texas Bomanite installed over 145,000 square feet of architectural concrete that incorporates 4 different patterns (Bomacron Canyon Stone, Bomacron Medium Ashlar Slate, Bomacron Random Boardwalk, Bomacron 6” x 6” Granite Setts) and 2 textures (Bomacron Used Brick Texture, Traditional Broom Finish) with multiple colors of Integral Color, Color Hardener and Release Agents each adding different interest and ambiance to the Texas themed look. The entire project was sealed with Bomanite HydroLock for additional durability. This mega installation of Bomanite Decorative Concrete offers versatility in design, long-term durability, low-maintenance, weather-resistant features and environmentally friendly attributes for the Tanger Outlet and earned Texas Bomanite The Best Bomanite Imprint Systems Project Bronze Award for their styled fashionable walkways for shoppers seeking retail therapy.

CoLab CoHousing Community

CoLab is an impressive 7-story podium student housing residential development with 253 apartment units that house 727 individual bedrooms and includes top-notch amenities. The 5-story residential component sits atop a 2-story partially buried parking garage creating a unique above ground level installation for outdoor amenities. Colorado Hardscapes, a Bomanite Decorative Concrete Contractor worked with Landscape Architect, Britina Designs to make the outdoor living space a stylish modern green community. Environmentally conscious, CoLab chose materials and systems to minimize waste and maximize energy.

The CoLab Student Living Housing Community, a USGBC Gold LEED project, brings the outdoors in with smartly styled study spaces, a rooftop deck and several lush outdoor gathering areas for tenants to enjoy; the pool court (Resort-Style Pool), Fire Court (Outdoor Lounge) and Water Court (Table Games) all featuring decorative concrete. During the design stage Britina Designs visited Colorado Hardscapes Showroom viewing several samples of different concrete systems and to determine the final finishes, aggregates and colors.

Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems Sandscape Texture was chosen for the general walkways and courtyards with an inviting eye-catching alternating band of color panels of flatwork. The Bomanite Sandscape Texture was also incorporated into the pool coping with a child safety grip and coordinating color. Bomanite Sandscape Texture utilizes specialized concrete mix designs, additives, decorative mineral aggregates, topical treatments and advanced application procedures to produce a finished product that resembles sand blasted concrete through fine “quarried stone”. Bomanite Sandscape Texture typically involves the use of Bomanite Integral Color and may incorporate specialized natural, regionally selected and qualified sands such as slag, granite, quartz or limestone.

The Bomanite Sandscape Refined Series is similar in design to conventional Sandscape, based on the exposure of fine quartz aggregates but bound in Bomanite Color Hardener. The resulting texture is known as “sugar cube finish”; the feel of the concrete mimics the texture of formed sugar cubes. Due to the use of Bomanite Color Hardener, the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Refined Series is available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including cost effective light-reflective formulations that do not require the use of white cement to reduce heat island effect. The Sandscape Refined Architectural Concrete Finish was installed around the firepit lounge area and included amber glass and crushed mirror glass for a natural reflective nighttime sheen.

The Bomanite Toppings Systems Micro-Top ST, a spray applied concrete resurfacing product, has excellent adhesion and weather resistance with the ability to withstand prolonged pedestrian and light duty vehicular traffic. Bomanite Micro-Top ST provides a tough, slip resistant water-retardant coating that substantially reduces water penetration, freeze-thaw scaling and concrete carbonation making it perfect choice for the exterior areas of this Denver Community Housing development. Colorado Hardscapes placed the Micro-Top ST on curbs, steps and walls with a custom color match to complement the surrounding finishes. Once the finish was complete the owners loved the look so much that they requested an additional application to the front foundation.

A popular growing technique, Colorado Hardscapes installed Board-formed Concrete, for the fire pit, water features and outdoor kitchen BBQ. Board-formed Concrete is a process of patterning concrete that leaves a wood grain image on the finished face of the concrete. Because concrete is extremely well-suited as a finished material in modern design, by imprinting the wood grain on the surface, it visually softens and warms concrete’s somewhat cooler appearance while still allowing concrete to express the construction technique giving a modern yet rustic organic vibe to these CoLab outdoor hangouts.

CoLab achieved LEED GOLD certification with the collaboration efforts from the owner/developer, designers, contractors, and consultants that led to points in the following categories: High Efficiency Heating and Cooling Systems; Energy Efficient Appliances; High Efficiency Hot Water Heating; Energy Efficient Lighting; Indoor Environment Quality; Innovation & Design Process; and Material and Resources. Making a LEED Gold certified community, CoLab provides the peace of mind to tenants of knowing their community was built and operates in an environmentally friendly manner with the generated benefits of energy-efficiency and cost-savings. Tanger Outlets – Daytona Beach

The future of physical shopping is about creating a compelling destination and a location specific experience to engage the public to generate return visitation. Tanger Outlets Daytona, working with project designer, EDSA and decorative concrete craftsmen, Edwards Concrete Company provided just that! Bomanite Licensee, Edwards Concrete, with their expertise in the decorative concrete field helped to create an ultimate shopping experience that provided the guests with the feeling of spending the day at the racetrack with a beachy vibe. Working for four months building out walkways, major thorough fares, plazas, outdoor living areas and a splash pad playground along with thousands of feet of decorative concrete curbing, Edwards Concrete pulled out all the stops to transform the 38-acre site design into a contemporary social gathering mega shopping mall.

The project designer EDSA has a winning track record for planning, landscape architecture, themed environment design and urban design. Breaking the mold of a traditional outlet mall, Tanger Outlets Daytona was designed to provide a fresh and unique appeal to their customers. The aesthetic styling is a combination of beach-industrial and mid-century modern theme with brand name stores located in the interior space that are connected by the outdoor walkways and plaza spaces inspired by the Daytona International Speedway that lies just a few short miles away.

With a circular racetrack pattern on the outside perimeter there are four standout entry plazas of ocean, beach, industrial and Floridian forest themes showcasing unique decorative concrete paving installed by Edwards Concrete, with planters and lighting that lead into an interior checkerboard pattern of sponge finished two tone colored concrete walkways resembling the racetrack infield.

A Bomanite Exposed Aggregate step plaza with light box seating and handicap ramp was created with embedded seashells to provide a reflective nature of light. Common gathering spaces, “pit stops”, create points of convergence; media lounge, two outdoor living rooms, three cabanas, lighted sitting swings, and shading trellis contribute to the social shopping experience. To facilitate the beach theme Bomanite imprinted concrete in a Bomacron Boardwalk pattern was incorporated into several of the lounge areas as well as common walking areas along the front of retail shops. In addition, a kid worthy splash pad playground and central water fountain support the family-focused atmosphere. Edwards Concrete used several ocean inspired blues of concrete colorant for the surface area of the splash pad and sandblasted the defining bands in beige to mimic the water and sandy beach vibe.

Decorative concrete paving and flooring are becoming more and more commonplace in commercial and retail facilities such as this themed shopping mall for its versatility in design, long-term durability, low-maintenance, weather-resistant features and environmentally friendly attributes. Not only did Edwards Concrete display their craftsmanship with Bomanite Decorative Concrete for multiple applications within the scope of the project, they also met the grand opening deadline of this beachy racetrack theme inspired mall while enduring Hurricane Matthew that hit during the installation. Tanger Outlets 44th center in Daytona Beach was up and running on their targeted date offering a world-class shopping themed experience for local, national and international visitors.

Clovis Community Medical Cancer Institute Water Fountain

The Clovis Community Medical Center has a newly built Cancer Institute. California’s Central Valley cancer patients no longer need to travel across the state to receive optimal care. The quality of care offered at the $68 million Community Medical Cancer Institute is superior to any other center currently offered in the state of California and rivals prestigious cancer treatment facilities on the East Coast, according to Dr. Kenneth Forster, the Chief of Medical Physics for Community Medical Center.

What makes the Clovis Cancer Institute remarkable is it’s high-tech and patient-centric upgrades. State of the art PET/CT machines, rare hi-tech MRI machine which is 1 of 6 in total throughout the United States that caters to the claustrophobic patient, Cyberknife and Varian TrueBeam technology for precise treatment with less side effects can be found at this cutting edge facility.

The Clovis Community Medical Center strived to make the patients treatments as comfortable and convenient as possible. The overall aesthetics of the building inside and out make a difference. On a clear day, patients visiting the infusion center can see the beautiful Sierra Mountains along with a view of the Cancer Institutes desert landscaping on outdoor balconies and the base of the building. Colored decorative concrete walkways, outdoor dining areas, mood lighting, green space and a soothing water feature complete the layout.

Heritage Bomanite had the pleasure of being involved in creating elements of the landscape designed by Terry Broussard & Associates. Working with Vineyard Pools, Heritage Bomanite built the water fountain by forming all the walls, sourcing the hard to locate epoxy coated rebar and poured the Bomanite integrally colored concrete. Bomanite Integral Colors consist of colored admixtures and are developed for use in ready-mixed concrete or cementitious toppings. Color added into the mix (white or gray-based cement) is uniform throughout the depth of the concrete, producing durability and longevity of color as the concrete wears the color remains. The product is made of the highest quality pigments, as well as other ingredients designed to enhance the color and improve the pigment dispersion, workability and finishing performance of the concrete. Bomanite Integral Colors can be used with the installation of Bomanite and Bomacron cast-in-place colored, textured and imprinted concrete paving and flooring or utilized for other colored concrete flatwork applications (trowel finishes, salt finishes, broom finishes, rotary finishes), as well as vertical surfaces and other types of architectural concrete. The Bomanite Coloration Systems finish for the fountain was smooth troweled. The brass letters surrounding the top of the fountain remind everyone that Every Moment Matters.

The Coloradan (Micro-Top ST)

Built by Coloradans, for Coloradans. The Coloradan, a mixed-use luxury condominium development at Denver Union Station sits in a prime location. It offers a place for residents to live, work, and play. The layout of the outdoor spaces reflects the idea that the Coloradan is built for people who enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle but do not want to give up the quality of urban living. The project features restaurants and retail at the ground floor as well as three amenity decks for the residents. Landscape Architect, Dig Studio designed the ground level streetscape to integrate and enhance the existing rail terminal. The 5th-floor amenity deck serves private terraces as well as a community garden, which features a harvest table, sink, and serving area alongside an orchard of fruit bearing trees. The 18th floor houses the community fire pit and pool deck; the heated lap pool and spa allow residents to enjoy Colorado’s weather all year long.

Long-term success depends on providing value that extends beyond merely doing on time/on budget work. When the general contractor, GE Johnson, began subcontracting the 19-story Coloradan, Bomanite Licensee, Colorado Hardscapes proposed an achievable price and schedule on the decorative concrete scope of work, however they lost to a lower bidder.

Months later, GE Johnson, called to inquire about Colorado Hardscape’s ability to take on the project for The Coloradan planters and seat walls that would be placed in three separate rooftop lounges because the low bidder backed out of the obligation. Assessing the contractors already advancing critical path schedule, Colorado Hardscapes determined that they simply wouldn’t be able to complete the specified decorative concrete scope in the time available that would meet everyone’s satisfaction. Never willing to simply walk away from a great opportunity to build better relationships, Colorado Hardscapes proposed an achievable alternative that worked with the schedule and corresponded with the architectural intent proposed by Dig Studio.

The general contractor poured the uncolored, form-finished concrete walls using their own forces. Thirty days later, Colorado Hardscapes crew applied Bomanite Topping System Micro-Top ST as an overlay. At just 20 mils-thick, the Bomanite Micro-Top ST coating would be negatively affected by any imperfections in the substrate material, consequently, grinding and patching the form-finished concrete walls until they were completely smooth was imperative. Bomanite Micro-Top ST has excellent adhesion and weather resistance that is perfect for applying over almost any clean, correctly prepared and primed surface including concrete, cement block, tile, metal and wood. Using hopper-applied products, Colorado Hardscapes delivered a sand-finished surface that appears nearly identical to the original specification. Colorado Hardscapes was able to think outside of the box with solutions that met the builder, owner and project designer needs and exceeded their expectations.

Private Residence – Backyard Resort

Bomanite Licensee, Concrete Arts, Inc. being the homeowner, wanted a place for his family that showed the creativity and beauty of concrete and its endless possibilities. Working with Landscape designer Mark Huri early on helped with the transformation. From his experience, Huri knew that with the right layout and a small bit of terracing, it could provide an opportunity to stylize a very special retreat. The design incorporated a full-size pool deck, cabana, courtyard and waterfall feature using multiple Bomanite Concrete Systems.

As you step out the back of the house, you have a BBQ and dining area to catch some great sunsets. At the next level you are greeted with an infinity water feature that cascades down to the main entertaining area creating a beautiful waterfall, providing that serenity of being in the great outdoors. The steps and landing leading to the main area are cast-in-place concrete treated with the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Revealed System that is also used throughout the courtyard and pool deck. The steps are encompassed by unique hand carved, embossed cast-in-place concrete retaining walls that are 12-14” thick with top caps done with the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Antico Process System that is seeded with fine glass to add a bit of sparkle. The Antico Process works well with lighter colors that are often used for pool decks and other areas where light reflectivity is desired and is comparable in appearance to natural travertine or manufactured cast stone, a perfect complement to the retaining walls. The wall stone sizes and coloration were chosen to resemble European Castles and provide an old-world charm backdrop for the complete space. As you step down into the courtyard, slabs of White Bomanite Revealed were cast and surrounded with planting pockets and inlays of grass. The strips of grass help with drainage and break up the expanse of concrete, while providing warmth to an outdoor living space, to enjoy a rushing waterfall and cozy fire pit, for full relaxation.

Designing so that each area has a different function maximizes space and use. The Cabana offers a place of protection from inclement weather and brings the feeling of family gathering in the kitchen. It includes a fridge, gas fireplace and flat screen TV. Perfect elements for a perfect cozy getaway or summertime party. The cast-in-place concrete countertop was created with a 4” edge and overhang. The surface was hand applied with Bomanite Color Hardeners for additional strength and durability while picking up the hue of the retaining walls. It was then textured to resemble natural stone with real stone pieces embedded on the corners for a decorative element.

The Interior Cabana floor was created with the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System using an Integral gray color, stamped with the Bomacron Slate Texture pattern and then antiqued and color washed in a darker gray. The Cabana walls consisted of the Bomanite Topping Systems Overlay – Bomanite Thin-Set, which was vertically embossed and textured to resemble wood plank using the Bomacron 11 ½” Boardwalk pattern. The apex of the walls utilized a carved plaster and created relief of over 3” in some areas and embossed to resemble a cleft stone, all done in a natural gray to compliment the flooring. Family and friends can enjoy conversation, food, a book or a swim in the great pool.

The pool deck and its coping utilized the Bomanite Revealed System to provide increased surface and slip resistance, a benefit when using the Exposed Aggregate System.
