Chamberlain Elementary

Connecticut Bomanite Systems, as part of a $55 million renovation at Chamberlain Elementary in New Britain, CT, was contracted by the main contractor, Mather Construction, to build two front entries, three patios, and a stepped seating area, all in decorative concrete.  The architect at Kaestle Boos Associates, Inc., had a firm idea of what he wanted as the final outcome.  He wanted a “plank” layout, and based on that, Connecticut Bomanite guided him towards Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Systems using Bomanite Sandscape® Texture.  To achieve the plank layout, Connecticut Bomanite made the control sawcut layout 10’ by 10’ and the remainder of the sawcuts were decorative.  The “planks” were colored with Walnut Bomanite ConColor.  The surrounding decorative concrete used Bomanite Integral color Travertine Beige.

Where an alternate to a conventional concrete finish is required, Bomanite Sandscape® Texture is designed for outdoor applications.  Bomanite Sandscape® Texture resembles very evenly sand blasted concrete and can incorporate specialized colored sands and/or aggregates exceeding 3/8” diameter, utilizing specialized mix designs, additives, topical treatments, and advanced application procedures.  The finish is an economical alternate to other decorative concrete finishes while producing a monolithic concrete slab at low life-cycle cost due to the pre-aged nature of the surface.  Used in combination with a variety of color and staining options, Bomanite Sandscape® Texture creates consistent texture and durable hardscapes and are available in a multitude of standard and custom options, including light-reflective formulations that reduce heat island effect.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club

Sleepy Hollow Country Club is one of the oldest country clubs in America, and because of that, it was important to not replace or outshine their vintage assets and history. With that in mind, Connecticut Bomanite helped the club design its new patios and sidewalks while maintaining consistency between the new concrete and the older parts of the property. The club chose Bomanite Imprint Systems consisting of a 9,887 SF saw cut into a 4’x4′ pattern of English sidewalk slate with seal gray CH field and flamed granite with gunmetal gray CH border. With Bomanite Imprint Systems having more than 400 distinct patterns, different textures, and coloring options, Sleepy Hollow Country Club was able to choose the best combination for them to maintain their historical feel while also giving them an updated look and durability.

Bomanite Imprint Systems is renowned for its durability, allowing even the heaviest foot-traffic loads. When an episode of Law and Order was filmed at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, there was never a concern while the producers were maneuvering their personnel and equipment over and around the newly added paths and patios. Bomanite molds are developed from natural products such as stone or wood as well as unconventional surfaces such as metal or plastic or whatever your imagination may bring to the table. Images, logos, borders, and highly custom textures are all part of the Bomanite offering. Bomacron patterns are a textured version of the original Bomanite patterns. This product is cast-in-place, colored, and imprinted, plus it provides an added dimension of texture and relief between the joint lines.

Jones Residence Driveway

The Jones family was looking to update their driveway from the standard concrete that was installed throughout the neighborhood. Located in Burlington, Ontario the homeowners contacted local Canadian Bomanite Licensee, Bomanite Toronto Ltd to discuss details, options and colors for their exterior concrete project. Bomanite Toronto had 1,830 square feet to work with for the homeowners. Along with the driveway, the front porch design was to be incorporated for an overall cohesive look.

After visiting Bomanite Toronto’s showroom and reviewing several samples, color combinations, different patterns and textures, the homeowners chose the Bomacron Yorkshire Stone imprint pattern set at a 45 Degree angle for an eye-catching design to enhance their driveway and front patio entrance. Yorkshire Stone is a pattern and texture from the Bomanite Imprint Systems collection that allows for a clean, traditional Ashlar look with a texture similar to English Slate, but with more striation giving an overall Sandstone-like appearance. Yorkshire Stone is appropriate for all applications where consistent depth of tool joints and texture are desired. Yorkshire Stone has a distinct, but light texture that is enough to have a good slip resistance with a light sealer application, that is durable enough and works with the Canadian winters, great for underfoot while taking in the groceries or for kids playing outside. The Yorkshire Stone Pattern is combination of Individual stones available in both a Horizontal and a 45-degree texture in sizes varying from 6” x 24”, 12” x 12”, 12” x 18”, 18” x 18”, 18” x 30”, 24” x 24”, 30” x 30” and 36” x 36” providing a custom pattern and custom fit to any design.

Bomanite Toronto had to work with and around the existing concrete walkway that traveled throughout the residential community in order to install the new driveway entrance. In doing so they collaborated with the homeowners to choose contrasting and complimentary colors that would be cohesive with the existing walk and the house colors. Bomanite Shale Gray Color Hardener and a Gray Release Agent were chosen for the driveway and patio steps. A border was created along the driveway and patio area using Bomanite Brownstone Color Hardener. The patio steps were shaped, textured and colored with the Brownstone Color Hardener giving it a popping edge detail and adding character to the home’s exterior, matching the house nicely.

Bomanite Imprinted Concrete surfaces are the most durable surfaces of their type on the marketplace. Correctly placed and finished concrete combined with Bomanite Color Hardener results in long lasting installations that will incur decades of use. The homeowner’s choice of using Bomanite Decorative Concrete as an innovative design is a smart investment that will outlast the plain concrete installed in their residential community.

Only Bomanite cast-in-place architectural concrete provides the beauty of natural paving with the durability and affordability of concrete. With more than 200 creative patterns and an endless palette of colors, Bomanite offers an unmatched range of innovative design options to turn ordinary concrete into something extraordinary.

AWARDS: Bomanite Toronto won the 2017 Best Bomanite Imprinted Project under 12,000 Sq. Ft – Silver Award for their extraordinary concrete work.

Private Residence – Backyard Resort

Bomanite Licensee, Concrete Arts, Inc. being the homeowner, wanted a place for his family that showed the creativity and beauty of concrete and its endless possibilities. Working with Landscape designer Mark Huri early on helped with the transformation. From his experience, Huri knew that with the right layout and a small bit of terracing, it could provide an opportunity to stylize a very special retreat. The design incorporated a full-size pool deck, cabana, courtyard and waterfall feature using multiple Bomanite Concrete Systems.

As you step out the back of the house, you have a BBQ and dining area to catch some great sunsets. At the next level you are greeted with an infinity water feature that cascades down to the main entertaining area creating a beautiful waterfall, providing that serenity of being in the great outdoors. The steps and landing leading to the main area are cast-in-place concrete treated with the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Revealed System that is also used throughout the courtyard and pool deck. The steps are encompassed by unique hand carved, embossed cast-in-place concrete retaining walls that are 12-14” thick with top caps done with the Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Antico Process System that is seeded with fine glass to add a bit of sparkle. The Antico Process works well with lighter colors that are often used for pool decks and other areas where light reflectivity is desired and is comparable in appearance to natural travertine or manufactured cast stone, a perfect complement to the retaining walls. The wall stone sizes and coloration were chosen to resemble European Castles and provide an old-world charm backdrop for the complete space. As you step down into the courtyard, slabs of White Bomanite Revealed were cast and surrounded with planting pockets and inlays of grass. The strips of grass help with drainage and break up the expanse of concrete, while providing warmth to an outdoor living space, to enjoy a rushing waterfall and cozy fire pit, for full relaxation.

Designing so that each area has a different function maximizes space and use. The Cabana offers a place of protection from inclement weather and brings the feeling of family gathering in the kitchen. It includes a fridge, gas fireplace and flat screen TV. Perfect elements for a perfect cozy getaway or summertime party. The cast-in-place concrete countertop was created with a 4” edge and overhang. The surface was hand applied with Bomanite Color Hardeners for additional strength and durability while picking up the hue of the retaining walls. It was then textured to resemble natural stone with real stone pieces embedded on the corners for a decorative element.

The Interior Cabana floor was created with the Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System using an Integral gray color, stamped with the Bomacron Slate Texture pattern and then antiqued and color washed in a darker gray. The Cabana walls consisted of the Bomanite Topping Systems Overlay – Bomanite Thin-Set, which was vertically embossed and textured to resemble wood plank using the Bomacron 11 ½” Boardwalk pattern. The apex of the walls utilized a carved plaster and created relief of over 3” in some areas and embossed to resemble a cleft stone, all done in a natural gray to compliment the flooring. Family and friends can enjoy conversation, food, a book or a swim in the great pool.

The pool deck and its coping utilized the Bomanite Revealed System to provide increased surface and slip resistance, a benefit when using the Exposed Aggregate System.  A White Base, hand seeded with Georgia white marble in two sizes and then exposed, produced the surrounding deck that brings light and coolness on a very hot 100 degree summer day. Bomanite Revealed is available in light-reflective formulations reducing heat island effect, making the pool deck walkable and not hot to the touch. This backyard resort has something for everyone, whether a pool party, family celebrations, intimate gatherings or just relaxing in the great outdoors. Bomanite Decorative Concrete can create the look and feel you imagined, welcoming one or all.

Awards: 2018 Best Bomanite Specialty Project – Bronze Award

South Congress Hotel

Nestled in the heart of trendy SoCo (South Congress Avenue) in Austin, is the South Congress Hotel designed by the Austin architecture firm of Dick Clark + Associates. Bomanite Licensee, Texas Bomanite, joined the process in April 2013 by pricing the exterior architectural concrete working with the Houston office of Manhattan Construction from April to November to revise estimates as the project became more defined. They were awarded the work in November 2013 and the project was completed in late 2015.

Situated on nearly an acre of land, the building spans over 82,000 square feet and includes a hotel, restaurants and retail space. Texas Bomanite’s role in the project included integral color concrete with Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Sandscape Texture and Sandblast paving finishes as well as board-formed concrete planter walls and water features incorporated into walkways, courtyards and outside dining venues.

The South Congress hotel was included in the “It List 2016: The Best New Hotels on the Planet,” by Travel + Leisure Magazine!

Mellow Mushroom Restaurant

Mellow Mushroom pizzerias began in 1974 in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring their signature hippy-inspired décor, pizza crust made with spring water and offerings for people with all types of dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian. Mellow Mushroom has since expanded across the south and one of the newest stores has recently been completed in Round Rock, Texas.

Each franchise features a different theme for each of its venues. Architects, Oxley Williams Tharp have worked with Mellow Mushroom for years, around the country, to provide a unique dining experience where each individual franchisee’s personality is represented in the design. From rotating cows, to airstream trailers, they work with the artists to generate an environment that is both dynamic, fun and truly unique.

Led by general contractors JJO Construction out of Ohio, Texas Bomanite was called on to add to the unique “vibe” of the chain by bedecking the expansive patio encompassing the restaurant. The 1,035 SF patio was created with a Bomanite Micro-Top XT grey base, stained with Bomanite Chemical Stain Auburn and sealed with Bomanite HydroLock. The Auburn concrete stain color contributes to the warm and laid-back ambience of the patio to encourage diners to come and stay awhile.

Marriott Courtyard Hotel

The Marriott Courtyard Asheville Airport Hotels entryway and guests terrace received a much needed beautiful makeover.  Bomanite Licensee, Carolina Bomanite, was called in by the general contractor, Pro Construction, on advice from the owner. The owner, Touchstone Hospitality, was having a workmanship issue with the first pour of stamped concrete by a local contractor. Lack of skilled labor, lack of multiple tools led to a very poorly poured terrace off the meeting area. The client had used Carolina Bomanite before on a Hampton Inn Hotel project and was familiar with the workmanship and asked if they could remedy the issues.

Carolina Bomanite was able to review the project and recommend corrections that were in need for standard regulation pours and stamped concrete work. All of the curb and gutter at the porte-cochere was 11” to low and the area leading to the front door exceeded 5% slope. In addition, a small smoking patio sidewalk had to be reworked with a twist in order to get enough length to keep the slope under 3%. All of these items were noticed by the Carolina Bomanite team. Carolina Bomanite first took control of the grades, and then made some adjustments to the pattern and the project turned out great. The Bomacron English Sidewalk Slate Pattern and Bomacron Slate Texture were used for the porte-cochere area with Bomanite Caramel Color Hardener and Bomanite Forest Brown Release colors. For the circular terrace area, the Bomacron Running Bond Used Brick pattern was installed with a Bomanite Brick Red Color Hardener.

Touchstone Hospitality was very pleased with the work done. Guests are now welcomed with a properly installed, safe, stylish stamped concrete entrance and inviting relaxing stamped concrete terrace.

The project also included a large imprinted courtyard and pool deck that required drainage solutions. Yorkshire Stone, a pattern from the Bomanite Imprint Systems collection, was selected for the 3,526 sq. ft. project. Bomanite French Gray Release Agent was selected for the project as well as additional custom colors.

Private Residence – Castle Rock, CO

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS/INFORMATION

Description:

Planning for the landscape and pool project at this Castle Pines residence included early meetings at Bomanite Licensed Contractor, Colorado Hardscapes’ Design Center with Courtney McRickard, the landscape designer. Colors, textures, and different applications were discussed, sampled, reviewed all the while keeping the costs of each option in tune with the overall budget.

Final selections included the use of natural stone paving and cast-in-place concrete – both vertical and horizontal. Landscape walls, pool coping, cast-in-place patio stones, and the fireplace hearth all were placed with a Sandscape Texture ® finish, utilizing a specialty integral color, a light buff color, achieved by utilizing titanium dioxide in the concrete mix.

The fireplace hearth was finished by grinding and polishing the concrete to a glass-like finish, making a very smooth hearth and/or bench.

The patio area with the cast-in-place patio stones of varying sizes was cast on a level plane with a sub-surface drainage system designed to quickly move any water away from the house and its foundation. Small Mexican beach pebbles filled the gaps between the patio sections.

The colors and textures of the concrete worked well with both the hard and soft surfaces of the overall landscape theme to create an outstanding project.

Private Residence Pool Deck – Omaha, NE

Bomanite Imprint Licensee, Stephens and Smith Construction worked with the homeowner to select the overall design, patterns and colors for their patio and pool deck renovation. The homeowners existing concrete and stoops had a spray texture overlay and stenciled brick borders in a pinwheel design. The owners had seen stamped concrete and were interested in changing their deck and giving it a fresh new look.

Stephens and Smith demo’d the existing deck and was able to dispose of all the rubble on site, saving the homeowner in disposal fees. The demo did take a few extra days due to the uneven real brick that was discovered under the overlay. Once all was removed, Stephens and Smith was able to regrade and place the concrete in four pours that had to be transported 160’ to 200’ due to the length of the driveway and expansive 20 acre lot. The concrete was stamped with a Slate Texture and 8” Brick Border for an updated clean and inviting backyard space.

Stephens and Smith Construction provides quality products installed by quality people. With two locations in Nebraska, Stephens and Smith offers a variety of decorative concrete products and systems, and are dedicated to the highest standards of quality and service.
